I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
She loves me it's not just in my head
She loves me even though it's not been said
And if anything means anything
Then this means something good
And I guess I'd love her back if I only could
She loves me
I can see it when she smiles ear to ear
She loves me and I'm sure that she can't hear
How I scream out for someone else
When I'm asleep or by myself
How I'm so sad I hate myself
Don't know where to go for help
Her love could never grow sour
Becomes more pure with every hour
And I never wanted anything like that from her
But still she loves me
It's not just in my head
She loves me even though it's not been said
And if anything means anything
Then this means something good
I guess I'd love her back if I only could
She loves me
And I know she can accept me for myself
She loves me and I'm shure that she can't help
How I'm this close to cashing in
How I chase dreams that don't exist
How I hate girls and I hate my life
The pain that rips me tears me ruins me
And her love could never grow sour
It grows more pure with every hour
I never wanted anything like that from her
But still she loves me
(I don't have to be all by myself)
She loves me
(She don't love no one else)
She loves me
The way she loves me
The way she loves me
She loves me even though it's not been said
And if anything means anything
Then this means something good
And I guess I'd love her back if I only could
She loves me
I can see it when she smiles ear to ear
She loves me and I'm sure that she can't hear
How I scream out for someone else
When I'm asleep or by myself
How I'm so sad I hate myself
Don't know where to go for help
Her love could never grow sour
Becomes more pure with every hour
And I never wanted anything like that from her
But still she loves me
It's not just in my head
She loves me even though it's not been said
And if anything means anything
Then this means something good
I guess I'd love her back if I only could
She loves me
And I know she can accept me for myself
She loves me and I'm shure that she can't help
How I'm this close to cashing in
How I chase dreams that don't exist
How I hate girls and I hate my life
The pain that rips me tears me ruins me

It grows more pure with every hour
I never wanted anything like that from her
But still she loves me
(I don't have to be all by myself)
She loves me

She loves me
The way she loves me
The way she loves me

Gentle Hour

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

Sunglasses at Night

In the 1980s, sunglasses were a common fashion for people who wanted to adopt a "tough guy" persona (note all the cop shows from that era -- Simon & Simon, Miami Vice, etc. -- where the lead characters wore shades). So I think this song is about a guy who wears shades as a way of hiding his insecurity after learning that his girlfriend is cheating on him. He's trying to pretend that he's a "tough guy" to hide the fact that his girlfriend's affair is disturbing him.
Very similar meaning to Hope, only this time he's got a girl who's in love with him as well. He can't love her back because he's obsessed with this one other girl he knows he can never have.
i can relate to this song so much... YAY go descendents
Indeed, I love this song, it's amazing. I can totaly relate... I guess... maybe.. errr..
This song, like so many of Karl Alvarez’s masterpieces, talk about his inner struggle. I know this struggle. It is like Hope, except he is with someone who truly loves him. But he still has that longing, that mental and emotional block created by the shame he is drowning in. He can’t hear her love for him, even though he sees evidences of it every day. Because he gets so wrapped up in the disaster that is his inner world—pining for other women, self-loathing, hopelessness, vain ambitions—how he is his own destruction. Feeling this all the time, he is unable to love her back because he doesn’t feel worthy to have a love like what he receives from her. Has to be my favorite song because it speaks so deeply to my soul.
