The Shins – So Says I Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Just a side note... The Shins' (James Mercer) probably read George Orwell's "Animal Farm" as the communist and totalitarian themes of the song remind me a lot of the book. Particularly the anthropomorphic (the attribution of human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, forces of nature, and others) usage of Penguins in the video versus the usage of farm animals (esp. Pigs) in the book. |
The Streets – Don't Mug Yourself Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Just heard this song on the ben sherman cd and it totally caught my attention. It's awesome and sooo funny. I dated a guy recently who'd always write "oi, oi, oi" in his e-mails, I could never figure out why he did that. Anyway, this song cracked me up, I think what happened in this song happened with this guy and myself. I think he really liked me at first, but then something happened (don't know exactly what, something about needing to be alone after a bad breakup with his ex 6 months prior, maybe he got back together...) and he never called me again. Oh well... game over, too cold. |
Franz Ferdinand – Come on Home Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is a great song! It seems like such a fitting last song to an awesome CD. So whenever I hear this song I think of a guy and girl who were together at one point, but not anymore and now he thinks about her all the time. He likes being alone because he likes his heart to ache and he feels nervous whenever he sees her. Almost like he kinda likes the feeling of melancholy longing. Both people are in similar situations in life and both are ambitious people that get what they want. He talks about getting any girl he wants but he’s not really satisfied because no one can be “her". He knows they both want each other however neither can say it because both have willpower ie both are so strong. When he does see her he thinks she’s beautiful but the night ends and he always ends up thinking about her. In the last lines like he wants her to come home to him, but she must actually physically leave her house to come to him. Basically it sounds like both like each other but not so much as they like the head games or the “do they, don’t they?” kind of feeling. Ultimately he wants her to be the first to say how she feels. |
Radiohead – The Tourist Lyrics | 20 years ago |
Oh WOW! I thought I was the only crazy one that felt this album was a loop. I would listen to this song in my car and immediately had to listen to airbag, people would get mad at me for doing that. Anyway, after reading Lumpy Custard's comment I TOTALLY see a different interpretation and one that seems so obvious now... It Barks at no one else but me like its seen a ghost... the semi truck (you know this from Airbag) is honking (barking) at the car coming at it. The car can't stop in time (because it's going so fast) so the sparks are the tires on the pavement screeching to a grinding halt. Slow down, slow down is the realization that you're going to be in an accident... That's why I always have to listen to Airbag next. Just one more time to "find out" he made it. |
Dido – White Flag Lyrics | 20 years ago |
In a nutshell, you loved someone in your past dearly, you're not with them because of the mistakes you've made, you tell them you love them but totally understand their unwillingness to get back together, so all you can do is love them, and eventually pretend you're over them. It's about a lost cause. A lament on the one that got away... |
Franz Ferdinand – Darts Of Pleasure Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I hate to say the usual... "this song rocks", or "I LOVE this song", as I like to think of myself as a bit more articulate than that. However, this song is soooo blatantly sexual, the words are amazingly intense. My favorite line: Skin can feel my lips they tingle - tense anticipation This one is an easy one, feel the word and melt upon it Franz Ferdinand - My new favorite band |

Lifehouse – Hanging By A Moment Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I've been reading this thread for the past 15 minutes and found it to be quite amusing. I don't remember when Songmeanings.com became a forum for discussing religious philosophies, as this is a place to discuss what one believes the song MEANS. Yet, I would like to address those that believe “Lifehouse” is clearly associated with a particular religious denomination versus being just Spiritual people that happen to write songs about life, love (in its many forms, including loving God) and being human. If you can spare a few minutes, this link might better help you understand where the author of this song is coming from…http://www.yoursound.com/bands_main.php3. Nevertheless, as I've said before in previous postings for other songs, the beauty of a well-written song is that it can be uniquely interpreted… Having said that, in my opinion, I believe this song has to do with a couple that are having problems in a relationship because of dishonesty. He realizes that something has to change within their relationship if it is to continue, as they both still do love each other very much. The dynamic of the relationship must change and he doesn't know where it will lead them, but since he's already lost a lot (because of the lies) they basically need to learn each other all over again, but he's willing to try to overcome the past. So "hanging by a moment" is being on the brink of something big and acknowledging that his life might change completely. It is having to live in the "now" because that's all he has at the moment. He needs to let go of all that he used to know and take an unknown direction. Ultimately, all he knows is that he really loves her... |
Duran Duran – Ordinary World Lyrics | 21 years ago |
This is a sad lamentful song. He still thinks about his love every day and goes about his life as always, yet he misses her so much. He recalls past moments and conversations and even though he's mourning the loss of his love, he realizes that he must go on and find himself again in the world, but this time, alone. He knows that his problem is small compared to the real problems of the world. In other words, he sees the bigger picture. He know he will never get her back and understands that its all over. These four lines just kill me ... because I understand the feeling all too well. "Where is the life that I recognise? Gone away." "Where is my friend when I need you most? Gone away." |
Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics | 21 years ago |
In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful songs ever made. Just the emotion Eddie conveys through his voice (especially in the live version) makes the song so powerful. Since everyone is sharing their favorite line, mine is a very simple one I heard in a live version found at the very end where he practically screams, "we belong, we belong, we belong together, together, together." This song contains so much raw vocal emotion, deeply felt, sad lyrics and a very haunting melody which is why it is so appealing to anyone who has ever loved and lost. On a personal note...this song will always remind me of someone who dedicated it to me in 1994. He felt that our time together would be short, and he told me he knew I would end up being a star in someone elses sky. I always wonder what happened to him.. In a nutshell, this song is about losing the love of your life... |
Radiohead – Airbag Lyrics | 21 years ago |
I think everyone here except ktims has got the general idea of the meaning. It is about an immediate AWARENESS of how precious life is at the exact moment right after you avoid an accident, when you realize that you could have died, but didn't. (Technology is the reason he's still alive i.e. the airbag) It is about a feeling of rebirth and being happy to just be ALIVE. I also have a feeling that when he says i am back to save the universe, he means this experience opened his eyes to a greater awarenes of what our existence means, and how he's gonna do things differently now that he has gotten a "2nd chance" at life. I definitely agree with wilco, ok computer is a concept album, mainly about how technology affects our everyday life. I think that most of this cd (in subtle and not so subtle ways) goes on to point out how conforming we as a society really are to the values and rules set by our government (political leaders) yet we really have no control, or we may not realize how much influence they (the govnmt) really have, but we don't care anyway. And I definitely agree with davidcoyote, I think the same thing about how Airbag is really the last song. Or should be heard right after the Tourist (please refer to the Tourist page for my explanation.) I see it as a cycle the cd starts out with the realization of being happy to remain alive and slowly progresses to a climactic ending. But because Airbag is the first song, signifying rebirth and second chances, the cycle begins again. |
Nine Inch Nails – Ringfinger Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I just had to analyze this one... Well you've got me working so heard lately Working my hands until they bleed **He's back with her, but he feels like she is in control and he doesnt want to do anything wrong, so hes working harder than usual, and he's humbled** If i was twice the man I could be I'd still be half of what you need **Yet he still can't live up to her standards, because even if he really tried, he still wouldnt be enough** Still you lead me and I follow Anything you ask you know I'll do But this one act of consecration is what I ask of you **Yet, he still wants her and will do anything she asks. And he is ok with it, but he just wants one thing in return from her...marriage. (Consecration in this sense means to make their relationship sacred by going through a religious and permamnent ceremony or rite)** Ringfinger Promise carved in stone Deeper than the sea **Here, he's comparing the marriage vows and the symbol of the ring as something that can never be broken again, (cause he wants to feel secure in the knowledge that she will never leave him again)** Ringfinger Sever flesh and bone And offer it to me **Here he just doesn't care about how she treats him, all he wants is marriage...at any cost. He'll take it even if she cut's her ringfinger off and gave it to him** You just left me nailed here Hanging like Jesus on the cross I'll be dying for your sins And aiding to the cause **I think hes saying he feels crucified by her cause shes getting away with a lot of things and hes letting her** Wrap my eyes in bandages Confessions I see through I get everything I want When I get part of you **he doesnt want to see or believe how she really is as long as he gets to have her** Sorry about my explanation being so long, but this is just how I see it. |
Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I think all you guys have read way more into what this song is about. I just wanted to point out what Radiohead thinks of this song, as well as all the songs on OK Computer. This is Radiohead reviewing themselves... .http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stadium/1738/thom/r-review.htm Nevertheless, I recognize that just cause Radiohead wrote this song about extra-terretrials doesn't mean you can't interpret it in your own ways. That's the beauty of a well-written song. |
311 – Evolution Lyrics | 22 years ago |
The lyrics make total sense! This song is about technology and how man should not be afraid of it. He is saying that we as humans are capable of doing great things but many people dont stop to think that our imagination is very powerful. We are evoloving as a species at a fast pace because of all the advancements man has accomplished. First our dreams or goals must be thought of in imagination, then man will make it reality, with the use of technology. He says there are a lot of people that fear our advancements because we may not be able to take the consequences back. But that we should still continue to advance because, if it is thought of carefully, it can and will be used for the good of all humans. |
Radiohead – The Tourist Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I interpret this song as needing to enjoy life. When a tourist visits a place he usually feel like he has to do a lot to take in the sights. He is moving at a fast-pace. He is also uptight cause he doesnt know the place he's at, so the sparks are him being irritated a lot. This also applies to people always on the go as well. I often think this song is 2nd to last and Airbag is really the last song on OK Computer (listen to the Airbag lyric. So I listen through the cd all the way and then listen to Airbag last. To me, it is like a rebirth, an awareness of life and doing things right this time cause you had a realization, however that came to be. |
The Beatles – I'll Follow the Sun Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I think this song is about taking someone for granted that they'll always be there. He doesnt want to be around anymore cause she thinks he'll always be there waiting for her. He knows once he's gone that she'll regret it. It is a simple song, with few words that mean so much. |
Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien Lyrics | 22 years ago |
This is one of Radiohead's best songs, in my opinion. I think this song addresses the issue of extra-terrestrials. Lots of people have AN opinion about aliens. Esp. in the US , where movies, books, and news reports bring this issue up over and over. I think that if humans on earth had the power to do so and found a planet inhabited by technologically uncivilized beings (compared to us), we'd fly over there often to observe them as we are being observed by aliens. I think that this song is Yorke's commentary on the alien issue, and that people tend to think someone who says they've been abducted is crazy, because people still find it (aliens & abduction stories) hard to believe. |
