Five Iron Frenzy – Banner Year Lyrics | 11 months ago |
@[socialengineer:47055] You might want to do just the tiniest amount of reading about your own country. There's a phrase involving glass houses and rocks that's very appropriate here. If you wanted to rank modern countries by historical atrocities committed, as hard as we've been fighting our way up the leaderboards, we still have come close to England. |
The Mountain Goats – Lakeside View Apartments Suite Lyrics | 2 years ago |
@[gnjanson:40257] I think John is kind of an unreliable narrator when it comes to the meanings of his songs. I\'ve heard him give completely different explanations to what a song is about before playing it and you can look at songs on here and people talking about what he said and them being different. I really don\'t think most of his songs are as personal to him as you would think (some obviously are) and what the song is about, changes for him and may not be what it was about when he wrote it. |
Jawbreaker – Accident Prone Lyrics | 4 years ago |
I guess I'm the only one, but I hear the lyrics to this song and assume it's about a suicide attempt and not the first one as the subject is prone to "accidents" and keeps a room at the hospital. "I cut in line, I bled to death" I feel is a literal line, not figurative as in cut in a line on his wrist. |
Paul Simon – That Was Your Mother Lyrics | 5 years ago |
So I hadn’t ever looked at the lyrics of this song before, but it’s kind of wild. The singer is basically singing to his son about how he used to have lots of fun and enjoy life before he came along and ruined it. That is wild. |
Paul Simon – That Was Your Mother Lyrics | 5 years ago |
A long time ago, yeah Before you was born, dude When I was still single And life was great I held this job as a traveling salesman That kept me moving from state to state Well, I’m standing on the corner of Lafayette State of Louisiana Wondering where a city boy could go To get a little conversation Drink a little red wine Catch a little bit of those Cajun girls Dancing to Zydeco Along came a young girl She’s pretty as a prayer book Sweet as an apple on Christmas day I said, “Good gracious can this be my luck? If that’s my prayer book Lord, let us pray” Well I’m standing on the corner of Lafayette State of Louisiana Wondering what a city boy could do To get her in a conversation Drink a little red wine Dance to the music of Clifton Chenier The King of the Bayou ‘Ei-toi! Well, that was your mother And that was your father Before you was born dude When life was great You are the burden of my generation I sure do love you But let’s get that straight Well, I’m standing on the corner of Lafayette Across the street from The Public Heading down to the Lone Star Café Maybe get a little conversation Drink a little red wine Standing in the shadow of Clifton Chenier Dancing the night away |
The Mountain Goats – Damn These Vampires Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It seems like it's about heroin addicts to me or just drug addicts in general. Lines like "god damn these bite marks, deep in my arteries" scream heroin to me. |
The Mountain Goats – You or Your Memory Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Before he played this in concert, he said it was about when he was working as a nurse in a hospital in LA. |
The English Beat – Save It For Later Lyrics | 18 years ago |
My guess is he's having sex with a prostitute or just a big slut "Two dozen other dirty lovers" That one's pretty self explanitory "Just Hold My hand while I come" Note the pause after come (cum). Looks like a double entendre to me. "Sooner or later Your legs give way, you hit the ground" Too much sex and your legs are going to eventually give out |
Paul Simon – Mother and Child Reunion Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Yeah, I've heard the chicken and egg rumor myself. |
Harry Nilsson – Coconut Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I was told this song was about abortion, but I have no confirmation of that. It's also very possible that I dreamed that explanation so take it for what it's worth. |
The Presidents of the United States of America – Body Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yeah, most of the presidents songs do make sense. They're all just overly perverse. |
They Might Be Giants – Prevenge Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I have no clue what this song is about, but I really like it. Probably my favorite off the new album. Just really catchy. |
The Faint – Birth Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Well technically it's not about birth as she has a C section. The part of the song that I can't really figure out is the very end. i should have noticed the beauty and not how it hurt wet like a cherry in a bloodbath of birth Though as I'm thinking about it, it's probably about the child covered in birth fluids after being removed from the mother. |
Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I don't think it's Kaufax for three reasons. First, he says cathedral which would not be a jewish establishment. Secondly, Kaufax missed pitching to Piazza by some amount of time and thirdly, he never pitched for the giants. |
Toto – Africa Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Is passing rains like passing gas? But the comparing Kilimanjaro to Olympus isn't comparing the mountains, it's comparing it to the mythical Olympus as in the mountain that was the home of the gods. Uh and guys, the racist comments were all poor attempts at humour. You gotta catch these things. |
Jay-Z – Dirt Off Your Shoulder Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think it means that when somebody disrespects you just to brush it off and rise above it. If you see the video, you've got the black kids who are being harrassed by the cops and a few girls who are being hit on in a cheap way and the message is just to kind of brush it off and walk away. |
The Faint – Some Incriminating Photographs Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This is probably the most mainstreme friendly songs by the faint and definitely one of the most catchy. Even though like most faint lyrics, they're on the depressing side, this song still makes me happy. |
Cake – Italian Leather Sofa Lyrics | 21 years ago |
The rest of the song makes sence, but does anyone have any ideas on the meaning of the serrated edge verse? |

The Boomtown Rats – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics | 21 years ago |
There is one mistake though. His name is Bob Geldof not Bob Geldorf. |
Carly Simon – You're So Vain Lyrics | 21 years ago |
This song has always annoyed me. I think it should be re-titled "You're So Observant" because the song is about him. |
They Might Be Giants – S-e-x-x-y Lyrics | 21 years ago |
You're going the wrong way with it. It's about someone born with a rare birth defect in which the child has both an x and y chromosone from the male as well as the x chromosone from the female thus making it x-x-y. This gives the child both male and female charectoristics and makes the rest of the song make sence. |
They Might Be Giants – New York City Lyrics | 21 years ago |
Does anyone know who did this song orrigionally and if there's any way to get a copy of the orrigonal? |
They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics | 22 years ago |
The thing about TMBG is the lyrics tend to be the odder of the possibilities. The thought of a song about G-d watching over us is pretty ordinary, there are many songs of this theme. The Johns tend to go for odder meanings to their songs hence, writing a song about a nightlight shaped like a blue canary. Also, have you seen the music video? Tons of lights in it. |
They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics | 22 years ago |
tee hee, you're clever..... |
They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I think the man-o-nam is actually about the narrator's father. Maybe he died in Nam and that's what destroyed the family and maybe the money from his death is what they're talking about. |
Big D and the Kids Table – GLD Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I went to a Big D show for the first time in a couple years a couple weeks ago and they said the song was about this really annoying girl at a show down in florida who had some really rare disease and I think g l d is the innitials of the disease (G..... L.... Disiease), but I can't remember exactly. I was wondering what it stood for myself until then. |
They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics | 22 years ago |
The Johns have actually admited this one's about a night light so that takes some of the mystery away. Accross the room from the night light is a picture of a lighthouse which would be his primitive ancestry. |
Elvis Costello – Radio Radio Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Hey Julie, try listening to some real music not your Slipnot gimmic noise. |
Atom and His Package – Undercover Funny Lyrics | 22 years ago |
From the liner notes to Redefining Music: "Matt Worth is a guy with whom I spend a fair amount of time. He's hilarious, but I only know this through eavesdropping on his conversations with other friends, and calling his voice mail to hear his ridiculously awesome greeting, over and over. For some reason, to my face, he refuses to be humorous. Perhaps he just doesn't like me (Impossible, or course), but I think there's another reason why he's what we call, Undercover Funny." |
Madonna – Like a Prayer Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I agree, I've always thought this song was about a blowjob. The music video is completely just to throw people off. |
Madonna – American Pie (Don McLean cover) Lyrics | 22 years ago |
For a song to be ruined, it must be good to begin with. There are no good versions of this song and most likely it will stay that way. |
Boston – More Than A Feeling Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Well the comparison is very odd seeing as NSYNC covered this song...... for that they should be kicked in the junk and then killed. Boston is a great band no matter their background. |
The Planet Smashers – Sk8 Or Die Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Another example of how the Planet Smashers can't stand the trends that seem to go along with ska and punk music. |
The Planet Smashers – Pierce Me Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Great song about the pathetic style trends that come along. The Planet Smashers would be one of those clean cut ska bands (what do you expect, they are Canadian) and it's clear they aren't too thrilled about the lets see how many holes we can put in our bodies fad. |
The Planet Smashers – Super Orgy Porno Party Lyrics | 22 years ago |
aww the intro's left out here, that's the best part "Pizzaman" "I didn't order any Pizza" "Well somebody's got to eat it" |
Mustard Plug – Miss Michigan Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Cause we've all dated Miss Michigan at one point in our lives or another and for most of us many points in our life. (for those who are confused, this is a song about masturbation and a rather clever one at that in my oppinion. Michigan is somewhat shaped like a hand and people from the state will often use their hand to describe what part of the state they are from) |
Elvis Costello – Radio Radio Lyrics | 22 years ago |
Great attack on the radio and tv. SNL was not too happy when Elvis played the start of Less than Zero then quickly switched into radio radio. Reminds you of the days when social satire and rebellion was actually clever. |
Big D and the Kids Table – fifty-one gardner Lyrics | 22 years ago |
51 Gardner Street in Boston. You can go and see the place if you'd like, thought the members of Big D no longer live there. |
They Might Be Giants – Till My Head Falls Off Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I was just looking at the lyrics to this song and an interesting possible interpretation came to me. The interpretation I had heard before was this is someone trying to kill themselves which is pretty obvious and the figure he doesn't recognize at all is himself without his head. I was thinking about a few of the lines and a completely different interpretation. I'm thinking this is about some sort of a speaker and I'm leaning towards a priest especially with the gripping the lectern line. He's talking to someone in the song. One thought I had is that the priest thinks he's possessed by satan or something to that effect. The numbers at the begining of the song seem to have some meaning as well. Is he just trying to down advil to drive out these demons from his head or is there more significance to this. If the bottle starts out with 87 advil that means there were 13 missing before the song even starts. 13 is an unluckly number so maybe the narrator is supersticious. He's arguing with someone while he's counting the advil because he ate 47 advil (why that number.... not sure) but when he counts the advil they're ten short. He's trying to conclude a thought but something is keeping him from completing the thought. Also, the broken figure he doesn't recognize may be that of his tormentor or possessor. I'm probably way off on all my guesses here, but this is my favorite They Might Be Giants song so I really want to know what the song is actually about. |
They Might Be Giants – I Palindrome I Lyrics | 22 years ago |
My thinking on the snake head eating the head on the opposite side, is from the thought of a snake eating its own tail and around until it swallows itself. Completely nonsensical, but I remember seeing it portrayed in cartoons. So when the lyric says the snake eating the head on the opposite side it's eating it's own head only from the back side (opposite side). This meaning would be that the mother and son (in this case the son because that is who is narrating) are trying to kill the other one but in doing so are killing themself as well. |
They Might Be Giants – Dr Worm Lyrics | 22 years ago |
This song is about a musician who is merely average (I like to play the drums/I think I'm getting good/But I can handle criticism), but is hoping that he will get famous because of his stage name that he thinks is very clever (Some day somebody else besides me will call me by my stage name, they will call me dr worm). |
They Might Be Giants – Birdhouse in Your Soul Lyrics | 22 years ago |
I like that idea that the blue canary is a spark as that works nicely with the first lyric of blue canary in the outlet by the lightswitch, unfortunately the rest of the lyric and song make it clear that the subject of the song is a light. Clever thought though. |
The Cars – Leave Or Stay Lyrics | 22 years ago |
This song seems to be about a less than reputable female who is coming onto the singer and the singer is indifferent. A decent song off of the Cars last and least successful album, Door To Door, this song gives us what I still concider as one of the greatest lines in rock and roll ever, "She changed inot her silk/I stood there drinking milk." |
