After listening and playing the song on guitar for quite some time, i think I "cracked down" on the meaning of the lyrics... The song is about a crackhead girl - yes as in crack, the filthy drug! The song is filled with hints and ques: - "Cracker Factory": A place where people gather to smoke crack and do other kind of drugs, such as weed etc. Alex was hanging out there. - "Practicing a magic trick": Getting high on crack - "Pick and Mix", "Strawberry lace", "Gobstober": All metaphors/euphimisms for crack/ crack crystals. The girl was smoking her pipe and she offered the last hit to Alex. - "My thoughts got rude as you talked and chewed on your last of your pick and mix": Alex gets phantasies of her performing oral sex on him, as she puts the pipe in her mouth. - "Your pastimes consisted of the strange, the twisted and deranged": Reference to crack smoking, which is a filthy, deadly drug and habit. - "I love/hate that little game you called crying ligtning": The girl was calling crack-smoking "crying lightning", for the crackling sound that crack crystals make when burned. Alex probably tried and loved it, but upon further use or on account of the severe consequences on him or others, he ends up hating it. - "And how you like to aggravate the ice-cream/ icky man on rainy afternoons: The ice-cream man is a metaphor/euphimism for the drag-dealer who deliver the sweet little treats. Alex gives a more direct hint when he calls him "icky man" - a reference to the infamous itchiness caused by crack-smoking. "Although i tried not to suffer the indignity of a reaction, there was no gaps to grasp or cracks to claw": Again use of the work here in a seemingly incospicuous manner. Alex decides to accepts the offer to smoke the "gobstober" and although he tries hard to not cough up - an embarassing reaction among the drug smokers as a sign of a noob, the insufferable burning chemical sensation lets him no other choice. * Also, initially i thought that the lyric "You' re mistaken if you' re thinking, i haven't been called cold before" was actually "caught cold before", as that was how it was transcribed on the music site i was using. Which could have meant that she was caught smoking crack and that was not the first time - however upon hearing carefully and according to all the other sources it seems that it is indeed "called cold", which refers to the girl's indifferent attitude. As to the rest, the song present the scene by which Alex approaches the girl to meet her and flirt: - "Called cold before" and "Stood and puffed your chest like you never lost a war"/ "Uninviting, But not as half impossible as everyone assumes": She is indifferent initially and plays hard to get as she is probably very beautiful and known to be distant or rejecting. But Alex manages to get her attention and start chatting. Not least, because he partakes in smoking. - "The next time, i caught my own reflection, it was on its way to meet you, thinking of excuses to postpone": Alex is hesitant to approach given her attitude and activities. But amidst the hesitant though he catches himself already walking up to her. As a man, I can testify that i experience the same kind of thing when i am about to approach and flirt with a stranger girl. You try to think it through and your fears come up and at some unconscious point, your self decides to let go and gets you moving without realizing. - "You never look like yourself from the right": Indication that the encounter was not an one-off and developed in some type of an affair, since Alex gets to know her enough to know that she ever looks like her self in profile. |
