Ellie Goulding – Lights Lyrics 4 months ago
I know this is really dark, but I can't help but think of this when I hear it.

"I had a heart then, but the queen has been overthrown"

Something terrible happened to her and she's been living with it.

"You show the lights that stop me, turn to stone"

This feels way too direct to be a regular metaphor. It feels more like a literal situation, like someone turned on the lights and she's freaking out because she knows something bad is about to happen.

"And I tell myself I'll be strong"

The different elements of this song have me thinking this song is definitely about dealing with depression, or possibly the worst of all: being assaulted.

I don't know assaulted in what sense, but if you listen to the song enough you can feel the somber, fighting, misery of someone living with a dark secret that has ruined their life.

Disclosure – Molecules Lyrics 5 months ago
This song is pretty straightforward about what it's about, and that's part of what makes it great.

The singer is witnessing someone on the dance floor.
He thinks this person is hot, and he doesn't want to use the same lines as other guys have probably used to get their attention.

It's a love song, with more of an interpretation of two strangers meeting through a mutual love of music and dancing.

††† – Nine†een Nine†y Four Lyrics 9 months ago
I think this song is about a fling turning into a deeper love.

It starts off by talking about "I pop the balloon you sailed across" might refer to the singer trying to 'deflate' any lingering feelings of romance at the start. Maybe he's got a cold personality, or he's afraid of being hurt.

"You didn't have to run, stop running" probably meaning that the singer is begging the other person to not leave him behind.

This is because "Forget how the contents were used" could refer to either drugs or condoms, it's not clear. But the singer is clearly feeling passion towards the other person with "you were not aware I was in love with you"

"You knew how good it felt to be home" is a bit ambiguous, possibly implying the two knew each other when they were younger. Maybe a childhood crush, or maybe just two people who have known each other for a long time.

Incubus – Drive Lyrics 1 year ago
I've loved this song for years.

I always found it easy to interpret this song about being true to oneself.
Especially with lyrics like "the hive" and such.

Are you living for yourself? Or are you living by society's expectations?

It's a song about finding value in one's individuality, finding their own meaning, instead of just following what seems conventional.

It's exactly as it sounds through the lyrics.

It's a very somber song. It's a song about being unable to win over the love of someone that the singer wants the most in the whole world.

"And you can't decide if it's enough" highlights the helpless feeling the singer has towards encouraging his potential partner to be seen.
"Watch me fall apart trying to please you" doubles down on this, evoking a very powerful image of someone who desperately wants to be loved by this other person.

Nothing But Thieves – Amsterdam Lyrics 1 year ago
It's a very straightforward song, with a bit of a meaning that could be more broad.

"Hey you watching me, lookin' through a screen"

It's hard to say what the singer is talking about here, but it's very likely directly addressing the listener. Maybe trying to get anyone listening to empathize strongly with what it is he's really feeling. Especially with "yeah we all live under the same sun", which reinforce the point that the singer wants people to not just listen but *feel* the conflicting feelings.

The singer has an emotional attachment to a place, to the memories he made there, and likely to the people that he met there.

"I left my heart in Amsterdam"

He says it so frequently, so passionately, because it's a place that he felt very 'at home' with.

"I hit my head up against the wall, over and over,"

He's not just sad or depressed about missing Amsterdam, he's livid and miserable. There's something about his life in that moment that makes him wish he could be in a place that made him feel peace and joy. Especially in the way the singer repeats himself "over and over and over again" in such a manner.

It's fair to say this is a song that could be very relatable for people who long for different places in general. It's a song about missing a place and time in one's life, something that they can never entirely get back.

Nothing But Thieves – Neon Brother Lyrics 1 year ago
I've read a few other people analyze these lyrics and there seems to be an emerging agreement on what these lyrics probably mean:

The 'brothers' are love and truth, or the logical mind serving as a ground in contrast to empathic love.

"If you open my chest you see that two chests are beating, falling out of sync.
There's the one I accept and the one I believe in. Which one drew you in?"

This leads me to believe the singer is actually talking about two different sides of his own psyche, or his personally held beliefs. It also hints that he is harboring complex feelings of love towards someone else but he doesn't know if he can trust them. "There's a punch and a kiss and I'm trying to remember."

It's definitely a song about passion. It's a song about the contrast between two ideas that someone wants to believe in, and the pain that comes from knowing that the ideas might contrast each other.

I think the song is about Depression.

It's about trying to leave behind the things that you used to love, knowing that you can never have those things again. That nothing will ever quite be the same.

Especially with the lyric "once I've seen the killer up close".

I always took that to mean that the singer saw himself in a mirror, saw that his depression had eaten him away so much that he "killed" his own happiness.

It's a very deep and sad song.

Nothing But Thieves – I Was Just a Kid Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a song about finding adventure in television shows and media.

"I was just a kid
I needed answers
I found a screen
Promised adventure"

Kids' television shows.

"I was in a dream
I was in heaven
I saw a god
I had a question
Opened my eyes
Fell out the sky
Tried to remember
But there was nothing"

Probably a theological crisis over wondering why life couldn't be more like television or media, and this is symbolic of a rude awakening.

"Then you gave me something
Something to believe in
Yeah you gave me something
Something to believe in

'Cause I was just a kid
I was just a kid
How'd it get like this?"

Life is hard and it might never be the utopia people want in fiction, but there are still things to look forward to as long as there are inspiring figures.

"And the story ends
But life goes on so
Like those before
And those to follow
Just when you thought
You knew it all
You'll find another
And then it happens"

People are always seeking stories and tales to inspire them and keep them moving forward; it's human nature.

But it's also because of these stories and the possibility of what could exist that humanity keeps striving for something better.

Nothing But Thieves – Live Like Animals Lyrics 6 years ago
It's a song about the state of politics in the United States.

"The TV tells us to be scared" is referring to the mainstream media.

"Pig-love is all we know" is probably a jab at all the unpopular politicians that have been uncovered as corrupt, but almost certainly the president.

"Now the kids are starting a fire, dancing around, dancing around the light"
This refers to all the protests that have been taking place in the last couple of years.

"If you're a something, don't ask for nothing"
Easy to interpret as 'if you're rich, stop asking for more'

"If you're a nothing, don't ask for something"
Interpreted as 'if you're poor, don't expect anything to change'
