When I hear this song I hear someone simply saying "I love you no matter what and I always will". She doesn't want him back for reasons not said, but understood she was in love and will never say she wasn't. I love the sheer determination of this individual to stand her ground concerning her feelings towards that special someone. I always imagine a captain going down with his ship! That was his ship and if it takes him down then down he shall go. It has beautiful meaning and speaks of how a person can truly always love another. Always. |

I have to agree with MeanSJean. It's about a man building his own mystery through his life. He is the mystery, the beautiful, the confused, and fucked up man. And we clearly love him for this. His inner self is well preserved while at the same time being completely exposed! We can see right through him to the mysterious life he's made and continues to work on. This is a beautiful song, really. |

I adore this song! It's definitely the best come back song that I've ever heard. After Rosanna A. divorced Peter, this was his way of publicly putting her down while showing that he is still going strong! The steam (for me) represents everything this woman was and what built up their relationship. It's as if he's mocking the much needed steam that dominates his life, if I'm saying that right? As for Rosanna, many artists have written songs about her but this is the only one that I know of which tries to explain who she really is. I have no doubt that Gabriel knew this woman better than anyone else in the world!! Yes, even better than she knows herself as Gabriel clearly points out in this song. |

If this song is indeed about jealousy, couldn't it actually be referring to "shocking" the monkey on your partner's back? After all, don't we all have a monkey on our backs? I personally like the inner self shocking the world around him. "Watch the monkey get hurt" says to me that from a spiritual standpoint the monkey has been upset by this person's real self. I think you could apply jealousy to that animalistic instinct inside us all. I love this song and how you can really feel a sense of strong emotion taking hold. It will always be a classic no matter how many interpretations are made. |

This song has always represented to me as an actual relationship ending and trying to make sense of it all the way around. Whether it be a friendship or romantic relationship, the person feels they have made mistakes and would like to make up for them but understands that's not possible. They even question what the relationship consisted of and why things happened the way they occurred. I definitely see the person as feeling inferior to the other and understands that they can never be on equal footing for whatever reasons. Regardless of how people interpret the lyrics, it's an emotional song that always makes me cry. Interesting fact, psychological thinking suggests that "oceans" and "water" can represent how someone feels about sex. I'm always wondering if that line about casting away the doubts by the water's edge might actually be a small sexual reference in some way? What do you guys think? |

I love the cover of this classic song! I remember when The Bangles came out with it and I was completely blown away. Yes, it definitely has that "seasons of time passing" theme to it and I do believe it's about someone looking back and forward at the same time. The "hazy shade of winter" serves as a constant reminder of time which continues to pass by. But "the springtime of my life" seems to present this person with an opportunity all too known to them. Yes, I think there is regret within this song, but it addresses that we all should be aware of that hazy shade of winter and what has passed by again and again. |
