Jason Isbell – Speed Trap Town Lyrics 4 years ago
Reading a lot of comments and I feel like people have given this a bit too much thought. This is an excellent, mostly straightforward song about country life and a tragic family story.

I believe the woman in the first verse is simply a local woman who knows who the storyteller is and knows his story. “Everybody knows you in a speed trap town”

In the south , especially Alabama. Football is a big deal. I think the singer tried to find a little relief by drinking and watching a game. Then the locals lost what seems to be an important game. Maybe for State or to compete for state. Now all that’s left for the players is real life and working. “A boys last dream and a mans first loss”

Our storyteller sees all of this as a wake up call. This is his life and there’s nothing left that matters here.

His dad is dying and his mom is gone or has passed. He’s been waiting out his Dad’s passing. A man who ruined their lives but is still his dad. He knows the dad did them wrong and never thought twice about his family while he strutted around playing the big bad trooper role. Cheating and preying on women “ while he was walking around “ Free to do as he pleased with no repercussions.

He’s just realized his dad can linger on for longer than anyone expected but will never be better. He’s wasting his life waiting and it’s time to sign away his dads care say goodbye and leave. He leaves and doesn’t stop until he’s far enough away to change his life and escape the memories of the town and townsfolk.

My two cents

Tank you Jason ,
For this song and all the others that touch us all. You are truly one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

Leonard Cohen – Treaty Lyrics 6 years ago
@[emptyempty:21906] I've been a fan of Leonard for many years, and a fan of this site for several as well. Your question about this excellent song actually compelled me to create an account at long last.
I may be over simplifying, but I believe the line to be read and interpreted complete " You were my ground , my safe and sound, you were my aerial ". With no disrespect to the other thoughts provided. I believe that she was the earth he stood on and the air he breathed. Aerial can be defined as "of the air". I believe he felt that this person or entity was all.
