RE: @[carpathia:1528]...

The last 4 lines are POWERFUL and TOUCHING. I love 3eb and don't care much for Pearl Jam, but I would throw out a challenge to you to consider Pearl Jam's "Black" for the most heartbreaking lyrics. Of course, every song touches different people in different ways, and on different topics. Considering "Black" in its entirety doesn't drop below a 10 in intensity, before jumping to a 15 culminating with the following at the end:

Yeah
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Why can't it be mine

Again, I love 3 eb much more, but "Black" just floors me every time.

Dishwalla – Somewhere in the Middle Lyrics 9 years ago
I always thought the middle was between him knowing if he really wanted the relationship back--as he emotionally (and probably physically) loves her and wants her--but mentally he sees "her bad disguise" (with "the look of an angel"). The song is phenomenally catchy, with great lyrics that so many of us can relate to. JR and Dishwalla are brilliant musicians and lyricists.

@[sarah70948:1522] I had commented before I got to yours. I am a man that has always felt the exact same way you do and felt it to be an amazingly uplifting and touching song lyrically and musically. I was shocked that no one saw it that way. FYI, here was my post:

What a difference one letter in the lyrics makes!

I was reading comments wondering why no one saw the possibility of there being beauty behind a woman seeing so much good in a man and how that could positively motivate him to become a better person--which is the way I had always personally interpreted the song.

This has been one of my favorite songs for 25 years--so long that I never got online to look up the lyrics because I thought I knew them before the internet was available.

But looking at the lyrics, one letter changes everything.

Cry a little longer
And hold a little tighter
Emotions can't be satisfied

I thought it was "emotions CAN be satisfied".

The good thing about music, is I can go ahead and pretend that I never discovered this.

From a purely personal level, I can feel a lot of interesting shifts of perspective from lyric to lyric. From feeling that I was the one left behind to also relating to being the one whose friends watched suffer as I let myself emotionally self-destruct. This probably has to do with the fact that in my case my wife left me for a "friend" of mine. Lyrics mean different things to different people, obviously.

This is one of my favorite songs ever. Great melodies, great lyrics that can mean many things to many people. There are also some great live recordings that are even more emotionally charged and driven with "rock rage". To this day, I still get the chills after hearing the first 2 seconds of the song.

@[SnoolesMcVern:1516] Great poem! I lived this song, back when it was everywhere on the radio, became a prolific writer of poetry for 5 years, and then stopped writing because I wanted to stop feeling.. Despite the fact that you can't escape the feelings of sorrow the song so brilliantly captures--and all you block is the good feelings--here I am, still blown away by this song. I hope that by sending this out to the universe, it aided in your healing. I, too, on occasion, still awake to dreams that seem more real than anything thing I've felt in the last 20 years. So I can relate.

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is so beyond brilliant in capturing excruciating pain in such an honest and poetic, bone chilling manner that it doesn't "merely" touch the listener. It has the power to take them back in time, freeze them in many moments, and consume and haunt them with raw emotion that is inescapable. Even 20 years later, in my case.

Can anyone think of a song that even comes close to capturing the pain and sorrow of a romantic relationship that came to an end (for the sake of this conversation, let's leave out songs related to death in a physical sense)? I'm interested to see what people come up with.
