Jimmy Buffett – Nautical Wheelers Lyrics 6 years ago
@[TehGreatMutato:22871] three quarter time actually refers to the common sea-shanty time signature of three beats per measure (ex: this song). BUM bum bum, BUM bum bum... DANCE with me, DANCE with me...

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics 7 years ago
Also, I think the "king is a whore who comply and conform" line isn't really talking about true greats, like Tupac or Jay Z, I think it's talking about the pop rappers that are wildly successful but not original. He isn't saying they aren't talented, but thinks they're whoring themselves out to the industry in exchange for riches and power. Probably goes beyond rap, but the mainstream vs true art dichotomy seems to be there.

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics 7 years ago
I forgot to mention, I came to the interpretation I just explained after watching the music video. Really seemed like it was about how everyone should be cookie-cutter conformist and not break the mold, and how we'll laugh when you fail trying to.

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics 7 years ago
Pretty sure the last line is supposed "And march him through the machine", as in the intruder from the previous line.

My interpretation is that the song is about breaking the mold. The chorus seems to be said in jest, or more accurately, from the perspective of the part of society Aesop is distancing himself from in the song. Society wants to see artists and entertainers fail, because otherwise they seemingly beat the system. So the chorus is about the system beating the rebels of society.

Also, just as a point of observation on another person interp, I don't think the snake river Canyon line is about a potential government downfall. Sounds more like that line is Aesop saying "if anyone objects to me living the way I am, feel free to be my obstacle today". You're right in pointing out that the imagery is of a rather perilous obstacle, but I think he's just exaggerating on how there's always something new standing in our way, and he's welcoming it as an expected part of his day.

Avenged Sevenfold – Welcome to the Family Lyrics 8 years ago
I can't be the only one who hears this as military commentary, am I? I have no clue if the band's writer was ever in the armed forces our close to anyone who was, but it just makes the most sense to me.

It sounds like a seasoned soldier talking to a recently deployed recruit. A troubled youth who thought the best thing he could do in his life is join "the family". When you first join, you're reasons "were so crystal clear", but then the reality of finding "yourself living in constant fear" sinks in. The "so can you look at yourself now?" line is the nail in the coffin for this interpretation, to me. Hardly anybody joins the military because they want to be mass murderers, but for many that's the reality. "Thoughts are so numb and your feelings unsure" could refer to the dilemma of following orders you morally object to.

Rilo Kiley – Hail to Whatever You Found in the Sunlight That Surrounds You Lyrics 9 years ago
I believe the song is about just what the chorus illustrates, someone who thinks every good thing is meant for them (or because of them, as I interpret it). But I feel like this is more about being egocentric than positive. Think of it like she's singing to a celebrity, a quintessential egotist (I'm picturing kanye west for this explanation). They don't necessarily radiate "happiness" or positivity, but they radiate a kind of electricity that "brightens" their surroundings like sunlight. People close to a celebrity might feel almost a contact high just from being around them. This only further feeds the ego, and creates a sort of viscous cycle. This is how I see the song, written to someone who thinks the world revolves around them. as if they were the sun, eh? Sunlight that surrounds you? It all comes together

Rocky Votolato – Suicide Medicine Lyrics 9 years ago
@[LessThanNeeded:315] I used to think of it like that. Then I realized that "the red wire or the blue wire" lines are rocky deciding whether to cut a vein or an artery. It all falls in place from there. The news is that he committed suicide, which they only find out when they discover his body. Most suicides are totally out of the blue, at least to loved ones. My old boss was living happily with his brother in an appt when he came home find his body in the bathtub under bloody water. Their bodies really do break the news, which is followed with thoughts of what you never got to say to them, or they never said to you.

The Thermals – I Might Need You To Kill Lyrics 9 years ago
I made an account just to mention the glaring oversight as to the meaning of the second stanza. It's referrin,g at least in allusion to, to the posts of the old testament where Moses leads the Jews in escaping across the sea. I feel like the killing here could be the drowning of the Egyptians who pursued them, but the last line sounds more like a part of the bible (maybe it was part of the Moses stuff, I dunno) where God tells the Israelites to massacre an entire enemy camp of men, women, and children while they slept. Not an odd choice of verse, given the subject matter of the song. Honestly it was so clear to me that I was shocked neither reference had been explained.
