Fleetwood Mac – Gold Dust Woman Lyrics 6 years ago
To me, it has, and always will be about fleeing a destructive relationship with a partner who is power-hungry, a control freak ("Rulers make bad lovers").

When she says "you better put your kingdom up for sale", she's no longer giving her partner the illusion of control through a domineering, one-sided relationship. So his chasm of control, the relationship, where he gets his kicks, is basically void now that she's gone, and he has to put it up for sale, i.e. advertise his love again, so he can oppress, and rule over somebody new.

Was there ever a better song written about teenage ennui and suburban malaise?

Lorde – A World Alone Lyrics 6 years ago
"They make a mess, then go home and get clean"

Brilliant. Sublime. Two-faced people will ALWAYS fuck you over sooner or later, and they will always expect to be able to sweep it under the rug when it's over, because it's easier for them to pretend nothing ever happened ("they all wanna get rough, get away with it").

Lorde – Hard Feelings/Loveless Lyrics 6 years ago
When did we become a commitment-phobic society, of people who prefer detached hookups with strangers, than sex with someone they love? Having a partner, a relationship, that stands the test of time is one of the most pleasurable and rewarding things in life. Lorde's generation want love, but they don't know a thing or two about it.

She's taking aim at her generation. All of these twenty-something kids who's perception of love has been so screwed up by the divorce endemic of the baby-boomer generation, and the false cliches peddled to them in film.

It's a fun pop song, with a very dark undertone. "Loveless" is like the ultimate fuck you, a girl who has been slighted by her ex, who will not be silenced. Who refuses to fade as soon as her man closes his eyes.

Sonic Youth – Sugar Kane Lyrics 10 years ago
I always took this song to be about a person, who is "perfect in their own way", despite obvious flaws in character/personality and appearance. That's why it's referencing Marilyn Monroe and her role in Some Like it Hot, Marilyn was seen as perfection... although she very clearly was not. Nobody is. It's about illusions and perceptions, some people have beauty that isn't media or magazine standard, but they still have it... its very straightforward to me. I think the drug comments are interesting but unlikely.

Q Lazzarus – Goodbye Horses Lyrics 10 years ago
I think everyone is pretty spot on here. It's about moving on, whether it be over a bad habit, a traumatic breakup or a difficult relationship, putting an end to an old chapter of one's life, resisting that need to stay the same and leaving it all behind ("Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you). Great song - very hypnotizing.
