Brian Fallon – Honey Magnolia Lyrics 5 years ago
I think this song is about taking control of your life and relationships. You can't control how someone you date will act, behave or change. By singing about this protagonist I think you're seeing how controlled she felt in her relationships. This latest man thinks he can waltz back into her life and treat her like a stereotype (like a fool from a film.) She envisions a future in which she can turn the tables and use a condescending nickname like Honey Magnolia in her man's mans world.

This song sounds like a beef the song writer has with one person but I think this is also very sociopolitical.

Love the reference to south Austin in the last verse, too.

@[squashedbanana:7211] Of the two choices I would say it's a breakup for the best. I feel like there was something deeply flawed about the relationship at the center of this song. Maybe like it was one sided with one lover never truly wanting the other person to fully commit to them. Then when it went from an affair to a relationship it all fell apart. With the secret, pain and choices references it makes me think the person singing knew the cold and the lies could never add up to a relationship that would stand the test of time.

The Gaslight Anthem – 1,000 Years Lyrics 9 years ago
A nearly perfect song! I think it's about a friend of his that he compares to the moon. This girl stayed on the sidelines and waited for the right thing to happen to her. It left her with regret and she admitted that to the singer before she died.

But it could also be about pining for someone who is in love with someone else who is taken. She's going to hang with the stars and not care about how much you love her and want to be with her.

I would also like to throw out a alternative lyric to it wasn't worth it. I think she died and said it wasn't one thing-- that killed her.

Did I mention I love this song?

The Hold Steady – A Slight Discomfort Lyrics 11 years ago
There's so much empathy and judgement in this song. It feels very much like caring for someone who is their own worst enemy and their destiny is determined by the people they want to spend their time with.

Love how this song just fades away at the end.

I didn't think MO could make a song sadder than I Can Feel A Hot One. This song proves that theory wrong. It's so rewarding even after many, many listens.

I love how the structure of the song repeats itself over and over again like a bad memory.

So many metaphors in this song it's almost too much to break down but more than anything I think this spells out what kind of asshole Andy can be. Also how he realizes he's just as much to blame for everything in his faulty relationship as the other person is.

Also the line "way too late for calling anyways I guess I'll doze off" I think is repeated because he realizes he must change and be more communicative in his relationship or end up alone and stuck with just his dreams and nightmares forever.

The song ends on my favorite verse, how he would have replayed the incident that haunts him if he had to do again. He saves his most meaningful line for this verse, "As if there's something worse, to have weaned away your worth."
