Lorde – A World Alone Lyrics

Incredible! I get completely pulled in by this song. <3
I think it's about feeling surrounded by petty, dishonest people and their empty chatter, and finding peace and silence dancing in the arms of her boy. |

Tom Odell – Another Love Lyrics

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself. |

Florence + the Machine – Cosmic Love Lyrics

This was the very first Florence and the Machine song I ever listened to. I'm completely taken away every time I hear it. <3
I think this song is about her falling so hard for someone that she feels like she doesn't exist outside of her love for him. She is, in effect, blinded my her love (a falling star fell from his heart, and landed in my eyes) and is imprisoned in darkness and twilight, because he doesn't feel anything for her and she can't pull away. She eventually musters the strength to begin to move on (I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map, and I knew that somehow I could find my way back), but he suddenly joins her in the darkness. Her twilight is a place of sadness, and his presence there signifies that he is sad and lonely as well (perhaps due to a break up or some sort of tragedy). But - he has noticed her, and rather than leave him in the darkness to free herself and get on with her life, she stays behind with him.
It's a dark song, but IT'S JUST SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL |

If i could make a music video for this song, it would be mostly set in the desert during sunset. Crowns of flowers, dirty faces, and bulky shawls. the discovery of an oasis. rafting through sand dunes. this song's put me in a daydream :) |

Florence + the Machine – Girl with One Eye Lyrics
| 11 years ago

I too believe this is a song about a completely nasty, vicious sleaze-bag of a man, but you did a great job spelling out a story that I 'felt' but couldn't quite explain in words. There's definitely an element of delusion in his narrative, like he believes that it was the girl who pushed him into abusing her and not because he is a nasty, vicious sleaze-bag of a man.
Your explanation about the "filthy fingers out of my pie" line also makes a lot of sense. I also see this line as representing the man's (heavily suppressed) guilt, where the image of the abused girl follows him around, tainting his life. Moreover, "girl with one eye" evokes an image of silent accusation as she watches him, relentlessly.
Anyhow, I feel as if I gained a new level of understanding in this amazing song. Thanks for the interpretation! :) |

I love this song. It's so cinematic, and her voice is like honey! Although I could do without that electronic sound that seems taken straight from the Chariots of Fire theme. But all in all, an amazing song! <3 |

I listened to it again, and I can pretty clearly hear "motel singer at a". But I'm not uite sure if she's singing "ball" or "pole". But since pole makes more sense, I'll submit the correction. Thanks for the heads up! |

Currently obsessed! I've been beating out the drum line of the song on my bed, on my legs, on chairs, on desks, on doors. The last one weirded out my sister as she thought I was going up to the door to hug it. :P |

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Gardener Lyrics
| 11 years ago
|
My literal interpretation of the song is that the narrator is a spy. While working undercover, he falls in love with a woman. Rather than reveal to her his secrets and dirty past, he quietly dispatches anyone who threatens to divulge his true identity and buries them in his garden. This way, he is able to be with the woman he loves while she continues to see him as a good man, the "tallest man on Earth".
For me, the biggest indicator that he is a spy is the line "it's not my flag up in the pole" - the narrator is not truly loyal to the country in which he and the woman reside.
There is also use of other spy lingo and techniques, like "runner" (someone who sends messages; an errand boy to his or the other country's secret service?), "spy", telephone "leak" (he is being surveilled by telephone tap), burned evidence (a little more ambiguous, but if he was a spy, there would definitely be some incriminating files or papers that he would need to destroy). Taken all together, I can't help thinking about an epic spy romance drama haha.
Of course, the great thing about this song is that can be interpreted just as elegantly on a metaphorical level, as discussed by other members.
This song is a masterpiece! I love. |

Florence + the Machine – Never Let Me Go Lyrics

Sometimes, when I go swimming, I like to take a deep breath and submerge myself underwater. Sounds are muted, the feeling of being suspended, and the gentle movement of water across my skin makes me want to stay under forever. It's very peaceful. This song make me think of that.
I had several lyric corrections:
"'Cause either way you cannot breathe" should be "Cathedral where you cannot breathe" and
"And the questions I have" should be "And the crashes are heaven" (for a sinner like me/released)

Metric – Youth Without Youth Lyrics
|
---Excerpts from Emily and Jimmy's commentary on this song---
http://soundcloud.com/metric-band/youth-without-youth-commentary
Emily: It started as just one verse - a story, a very slow, sad story about the decaying social state through the eyes of a depraved child. The song developed into several verses, which captured the growth of this child, the evolution of this child into a teenager who goes from playing simple children’s games to smashing a window with a brick and getting arrested, and being in handcuffs.
So it seems to be oddly timely with the general sense of malaise and discontent, so it's kind of one those songs that wrote itself.
Jimmy: We wanted to express some sort of form of anger and resentment, and the feeling of being pissed off because you don't get to experience the youth that maybe you should feel entitled to.
Emily: Sonically, we went for kind of a seventies sleaze. It’s always a good way to disguise any kind of political statement.
Jimmy: Or morose sadness.
Together, they advise to forget the rather cynical content of the song when listening to it and to "get into the seventies sleaze. The Gary glitter beat. Put on a tank top. Put some gel in your hair. Hit the town. Dance around. Have fun."
Gotta love these two. :) |

Florence + the Machine – Breath of Life Lyrics

I can't get this song out of my head. The only way it could get any better is if the choir consisted of 100 Florences! I'm glad she chose to write a song about the Queen, who is such a fascinating character - by writing about the Queen's unquenchable thirst for a 'breath of life', Flo has actually done a beautiful job in bringing this character to life. |

Florence + the Machine – Throwing Bricks Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
I love this song and I love Florence + the Machine!
I think the song is about a woman's unrelenting and dogged attempts to force her man to become the perfect companion for her. The man being made of bricks is a metaphor for the fact that her creation of this ideal man resulted in something that superficially seems real and sincere, but truly is not so. After all, we can't force people to be and act like something they're not.
The lyrics are typically Florence - metaphorical, passionate, and just a little creepy. :) |
