Seelenluft – Manila (Headman remix) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Correct lyrics (i think) On my plane to Manila, passengers sitting row to row, The flight staff served the curry chicken, When I heard the turbine go, Yeah. Out of my window was the sunset, On the wings a funny glow, Then my seat started rattling, (I was?) Sure that wasn't part of the show, So i started to dance, Without wearing no seat belt So i started to dance, Without wearing no life vest, I started to dance. My plane nose went down, I heard the pilot talk regrets, But the people didn't panic, 'cause they just all, stared at me, And they started to dance, Without wearing no seat belts, we all started to dance, Without wearing no life vest, We all started to dance, It was quite a ride. So i started to dance, Without wearing no seat belts So i started to dance, Without wearing no life vest, I started to dance. --- This is probably the best and the most relaxed song ever about a plane going down... |
Lifter Puller – Sublet Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I like the repetition of "we went two at a time through the turnstile". To me, this implies that they went "two at a time" both times during their subway ride (entrance and exit). I don't really get this though: "after your party in front of your roommates we walked out the doorway and got on the subway" So Narrator + Sublet attend a (goodbye) party at Girlfriend's house and then Sublet went home with Narrator to his house? Does this make sense? Girlfriend is not in Europe yet, but already Sublet goes home with Narrator? If this was Girlfriend's last night before leaving for Europe, I would think that she and Narrator would probably spend the night together, even if their relationship is not that great.... |
Gonzales – Working Together Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Just stick with me kid You're stuck with me kid To keep our secrets -> to keep my secrets See, I'm hard to work with But all the work is Hard to work less -> Hardly worthless |
Vampire Weekend – California English pt.2 Lyrics | 14 years ago |
near palm springs we were struck by boulders cause they look like skull in bones -> skull and bones. "Skull in bones" doesn't really make sense. Near Palm Springs means in the desert, which probably typically has skulls and bones lying around. Als "Skull and Bones" is a secret society at Yale, so it would fit with VW's Ivy League vibe. |
Vampire Weekend – Diplomat's Son Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's not right but it's now or never And if I wait could I ever forgive myself? Diplomats and their families frequently get relocated. The the son in question might have to move very soon, so there is only one more night/chance to do "something". "To offer it to you would be cruel When all I want to do is use, use you" Any clues what he/she might consider offering? Can't really figure this out, maybe it is his/her virginity? "Looking out at the ice-cold water all around me I can't feel any traces of that other place" The diplomat's son has left his previous home (where his dad was stationed), he might be in a boat or air plane (the ice-cold water all around me). He has already forgotten the feelings and memories of his previous home and the "friends" he had there. Koenig has said about this song: "Rostam already had some lyrical ideas for the chorus and then I came up with my own verse melody, so because two people collaborated on the lyrics, there is that sense of shifting perspectives." http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=125&p=7814&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 So maybe not everything is from the perspective of the person interacting with the diplomat's song, some parts maybe from the perspective of the diplomat's son himself. There is also the interruption between the son and the person he is interacting with: "I can't go back To how I felt before There's-- That night I smoked a joint" The perspective switches there. |
Vampire Weekend – Giving Up the Gun Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Koenig: "I got the idea for the song from a book my Dad gave me called Giving Up The Gun. It’s a history book about the time when Japan expelled all the foreigners from the country, closed off all trade, and stopped using guns and reverted back to the sword. It seems unimaginable now that humanity could willingly go back to an older technology. It got me thinking about whether you could give up the things that you have and go back to a simpler way of life." http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=125&p=7814&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 |
Vampire Weekend – White Sky Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Koenig has said that its about "exploring New York and the people who live there." I thought it was "a thousand little Juilliards", as in students from the Juilliards school. This is a very prestigious art school in the middle of Manhattan, I think it fits well with the "high class" theme of the song. The school also has a modern design with a lot of glass, and "a little stairway" right after the glass door entrance: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=%22juilliard%22+nyc&sll=35.318662,-101.809628&sspn=0.022656,0.038495&g=%22juilliard%22&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Juilliard+School,+New+York,+10023&ll=40.773717,-73.975496&spn=0.021027,0.038495&z=15&iwloc=A&layer=c&cbll=40.773598,-73.983475&panoid=Aw7QVb1yYxwakjc8IN5dow&cbp=12,48.96,,1,-2.29 |
Vampire Weekend – Holiday Lyrics | 14 years ago |
They mentioned this in interviews etc. http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=125&p=7814&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 "The lyrics refer to a member of my family who gave up eating meat when we invaded Iraq. They were horrified by what was happening internationally and they lost their taste for meat. It wasn’t even necessarily an overt protest, it was a physical reaction." In another interview (translation by me): "you don't have to understand her reaction, I don't either, but it should how people can react and express their political engagement differently" |
The Middle East – Blood Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think jsimos has some very good points. This succession of generation is also an explanation for the title: generations/family->blood line->blood. Just for the sake of discussion, I have an alternative hypothesis: The "older brother", "older father", and "grandfather" could all be the same person, from the perspective of different people in the family. However this would mean that this one man would have been faced with: death of his sister, divorce, and death of his (former?) spouse from cancer... Whatever the perspective, I'm pretty sure that the sister in the song is dead. She is buried in the ground, her brother(s) miss(es) her and the older brother listens to the ground (in which his sister is buried). Sleep means death. The reference to the beard not being long enough to reach her refers to the brother not being old enough to die (the beard stands for old age). When his beard is long enough, he will die and meet her (in heaven). I'm not sure what the "cold sweat" paragraph could mean. But I do think it is "and she woke up" instead of "and she'll wake up". Do you guys think that "that ugly, terrible thing" refers to the papers for divorce, or is he with the ugly thing AND the papers for the divorce? I'm inclined to think the latter, since it would be weird to refer to "papers" (multiple) as a "thing" (singular). If that is the case, the "ugly, terrible thing could be a gun. He can't handle the divorce, he is "weary", and thus he goes to his mountain cabin to kill himself. In any case, I do think that he is the "victim" in the divorce; his wife gave him the ring back. "follow the creek that runs out into the sea and you'll find the peace of the Lord." I think this refers to finding a path in life (the creek) that leads to heaven (the sea, the peace of the Lord). "burnt by the sun too often when she was young and the cancer spread and it ran into her body and her blood" She died of skincancer, which I think is pretty common in Australia. All in all, I think the song is about three generations of men who each lose a female person: the sister dies, father loses his wife in a divorce, grandfather loses his wife to (skin)cancer. The theme is quite dark, but the music is relatively uplifting (especially near the end). I think this has to do with the fact that in the end, death will bring the men peace. |
