This song is about processing grief. "Mamma said, lift your head from the sieve of your hands. Mamma said eventually this hurting will end. She's lost her lover and her mother, the wise advisor, is telling her that it gets better, but the memory of her lover still hurts. "When I was lost you thought me a beautiful find. Sometimes I think of you sleeping, so sleep for a while. I find myself asking who'd do this to love, And the white-shouldered mountains they pointed above." She reminesces fondly of her lover. Those pleasant thoughts turn sour as she asks the general question we all ask when we're grieving, "Why?" "Lord you just dropped me here by the side of this road. She's contemplating giving up, unable to comprehend how to move on without her love. That hole we fill in our lives when we lose someone. She's drinking and praying, as ways of coping with the grief. I just listened to this song five times in a row on the way to work this morning. It is perhaps the most straightforward and earnest declaration of love committed to song. It will be my wedding song. I think it's about three distinct phases of falling in love with someone. Phase One: The Meeting "Light reflects from your shadow It is more than I thought could exist You move through the room Like breathing was easy." That's about seeing someone and instantly becoming smitten with them. Their every movement is magical. And that feeling is so personal that if she could share it with you, make you understand what she alone is seeing you'd be "in love with you as I am." Phase Two: Getting To Know You "And everyday I am learning about you The things that no one else sees And the end comes too soon" Spending time with someone and they share secrets and you fall for them even more and understand their deeper selves. This phase of love also has that sense of yearning, like when you spend time with someone and now it's time to go home, or it's 1am and you have to get off the phone. That feeling is like "dreaming of angels, and leaving without them." I think it's about someone who has been making bad love choices. They're so broken down and disenchanted that they are wary of the true love that's blossoming (And do you think it's unwise to go and break yourself on this one? When all this time you didn't know love). He's basically saying "You are scared of loving me because of the past but you didn't have true love until now." |
