MGMT – Kids Lyrics 15 years ago
i keep noticing more things when i watch the video. Notice how when she is in the car she moves the seat forward (belonged to the spouse and had to adjust it forward to her height). The dark omenous interior of the car points towards her personality. The large shades and somber demeanor to hide the fact she was just in a breakup. Also notice that all the monsters that are recognizable are males which is common for in divorcees to demonify the opposite sex to the children (all women are cold hearted bitches, or careful of men like ur father who are complete assholes). All the little things point in one direction.

people too often assume it has to do with the environment because it recurringly mentions trees, controlling what you need, and warm water. But it has nothing to do with the environement. You really need to watch the music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad-tgbtbCEM&feature=fvst.

The song is actually about bad parenting, esp. in the case of a custody battle/divorce and the effects on a childs life, growing up with it, and their haunted future generations (family of trees). I wouldnt be surprised if members of mgmt had divorced parents. Why?
If you read the opening quote by Mark Twain "He who fights with monsters care lest he thereby become a monster" is a reference to bad parents as "monsters" that will eventually reflect unto their children (a family of trees haunted). In the music video we see a cold, careless, narcissistic mother. Notice her rings are now on her right hand, the father figure is absent, and she is living in a very nice house (divorce settlement). In every image society is seen as a monster; because in growing up with your closest parental figure as a distant cold person who wanted you only for the sake of winning and hurting the spouse(ie a monster), even regular people are now seen as the same. The car seat instead of something comforting is depicted as a cage and the car is omenously black pointing to the mother's personality. In every instance the child is crying but the mother ignores it. "Control yourself take only what you need from it" is in references to controlling yourself and not fighting over the child and tearing them apart in the settlement. "A family of trees wanted, to be haunted", in trying to keep the child and have grandchildren, future generations of that family are haunted because the child is scarred in the fighting over him and now prone to divorce later in life. The child is seen more like an object of possesion just like her phone and divorce-settlement-bought car: She pays little attention to his crying and even drops him. The police officer returning the child is a metaphor for the law/courts giving custody to the ex wife; you can see the child crying and resisting as they are monsters as well. Towards the end is a trip scene...probably a reference to divorce children driven to drugs to cope. In the end, the child is seen running to mgmt, a male father figure, or savior who ends up turning into a monster just the same and the child falls into a black abyss. "The water is warm but is sending me shivers" is probably a reference to thinking the mother should be loving but instead is cold (that or in reference to a baby being born, crying out for attention and not getting it due to possible consequences of a future divorce/bad parenting, thus sending him shivers). The next few lines are about growing up through it.
Decisions are made and not bought: ie the decision over the child should be a decision for the child and not paid to a lawyer in the event of winning the child from the settlement. Lastly think of it this way "i thought the divorce wouldnt hurt a lot growing up, i guess not..."
The first stanza is a reflection of parents only thinking of the enjoyable charactistics the child provides to them while in the custody battle. but they are easily frustrated when they are too loud (both very narcissitic characteristics). But they are not thinking of the consequences of their selfish actions. "no time to think of consequences," only time to think about what you can get for yourself out of it(hurting the spouse, lots of money, and a cool new piece of arm jewelry that unfortunately is loud, wriggling, annoying, and crying sometimes but omg who cares debbi is texting me on my new blackberry!).

MGMT likes to write about things they find dispicable, horrifying, but at the same time enlightening (this is from their mouths, not mine). ie control yourself and DONT DO THIS TO YOUR KIDS. its also a recurring theme in MGMT songs, in time to pretend he talks of marrying models, having children, and then getting divorced. In the music video for kids, the mother is a hot model divorcee archtype. Coincidence? i think not.

also i forgot to mention notice in the music video the woman's wedding rings are now on her right hand. The first stanza is in reference to parents being selfish: parents in the custody battle only see the things the child can provide for them not thinking of the consequences...
