Emiliana Torrini – Heartstopper Lyrics 12 years ago
When I first heard this song, I couldn't believe how much I felt it related to me. I heard it while at work (when I was having a particularly bad day), and from the phrase "I drink too much and smoke too fast, that this city's clipped my innocence"...it just reminded me so much of myself. I don't have a lover in my life, but just the overall feeling that your life is in a terrible spot, and the one person that can make it right either isn't there, doesn't want anything to do with you, or only makes the problem worse... It totally just fit me. Drinking coffee to keep you awake even though you want to be done ("Coffee's pouring out my ears, it's the only thing they have in here"), feeling like your messing up on everything ("You say I'm to blame for this messy state of love affairs, that I drink too much and smoke too fast," "I laugh out loud, my life's a mess, I have gone too far in my lifeless"), the pitying stares and gestures of other people that--while you know are good-intentioned--do little to ease the suffering ("Another coffee, it's on the house, the 'poor-girl' look is on the owner's spouse," "My neighbor smiles, he's handing me, the blackest coffee you will ever see"), waiting so long for someone only to be disappointed ("Outside your house to make a scene, inside my head you grabbed me passionately, but the lights are out and in an hour, I walk on home in the pouring shower"), losing things so easily ("Lost my keys in front of me")... I've had so many of these days, so many of these thoughts, and it can be so difficult, so life-/hope-draining that, well, you feel like your heart DOES stop beating, as if a part of you dies, sometimes for only an instant, sometimes for the rest of your days.

Regina Spektor – Prisoners Lyrics 13 years ago
I think listenrepeat makes a few good points...but it only explains part of the HCA reference. It doesn't help explain the rest, like "someday I will remember," "my mama thinks I'm grown but I'm really just little," and "but they want to run through the air...and to rise from the mud and start over and over with the people all dead." No matter how you look at it, you can't turn those lines into sexual frustration.

While I'm sure the character(s) Regina's portraying is/are sexually frustrated, but there's a lot more to it than that. I feel it's trying to portray the overall feelings of a prisoner--be it a literal or metaphorical one--and that's a lot more than just a sexual starvation. The isolation, the attitudes, the unfulfilled dreams, the desires, and the overall conditions of the prisoners.

Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics 13 years ago
I definitely see a sense of escapism in this work, and also a sense of being limited in that capacity. There's only so much you can do to escape from reality, and so little time to work with. In the end, things are the way they are, and that might not always, or EVER agree with what you think they should be like. That's what I feel this song is about.

On another, somewhat unrelated note...why is the general consensus such that--for every 60s or 70s song, or any song that comes from a band or artist that indulges in drug use--every song they make is absolutely about drugs?

I see it with the Beatles too--even for songs they made before their psychedellic years! It gets so fucking ridiculous... You really think that's the only thing these people thought about when writing lyrics? Undoubtedly, some songs certainly hinted at drug use or getting stoned, but that doesn't make every song like that.

If Dylan denies that his songs are about drug use--even today, when the use of them is more widely accepted--they aren't about drug use. I think HE would know more than the rest of you the meaning of a song HE wrote. Seriously, the absolute denial of some is incredible...

The Kinks – Sunny Afternoon Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't understand why everyone has to make every song political. It's the same way with the Beatles--it's like every song has some hidden interpretation that's attacking the government, the working class, the upper class, etc. Can we not just enjoy the story, and leave politics out of it?

I always imagine a young, wealthy man who is used to living in wealthy conditions with little or no work involved on his part. Then, suddenly, the wealth he had so much of suddenly vanishes--almost everything that made his life perfect turns against him. The taxman takes his money; his girlfriend leaves him, taking some of that wealth with her, claiming--truthfully or untruthfully--he was a bad boyfriend. Now he's left with no wealth, no particularly useful skill, and no woman--all he has is the ability to laze around in the "sunny afternoon."

It's a nice, clever story. Why does it have to demonize someone?

Stephen Colbert – There are Much Worse Things to Believe In Lyrics 13 years ago
Awesome! I didn't think this song would be on here...BUT IT IS! :D

While this album is filled with comedy, I think this song really rings true. As an apathetic agnostic, it's easy for me to either disregard Christmas or not even acknowledge it...but in the end, the believers are sincere--and in the end, happy. We can call them foolish, but as the song title says:

"There are much worse things to believe in."

Definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album, besides "Can I Interest You in Hannukah?"!

Regina Spektor – Ballad of a Politician Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is...well...as the title says, a "ballad of a politician." In a way, a politician may not see theirselves as a person, "a name/number" like most people...they see themselves as "a plan," a carefully laid out scheme to make it. Think of how seriously we take people's pasts--hell, I have no idea how many times I heard shit about Bush POSSIBLY taking cocaine while in the army, as well as Obama's POSSIBLE ties to Islam. In a way, a politician must carefully plan out his/her life from beginning to end.

As for the sexual innuendos "Shake it, shake it baby / Shake your ass out in that street" is possibly a metaphor for how politicians strut their assets in order to get elected--show off their experience, ideas, and what makes them great. She links it to prostitution and promiscuity because campaigning is very much the same.

"You love so deep, so tender
Your people and your land
You love 'em 'til they can't recall
Who they are again"

This is the line that speaks to me most. It shows how politically divided we are. Politicians run and constantly claim that they love America, on both sides, and yet the people on both sides get to the point where they forget that they all are the same people--it becomes a matter of political ideology, "I'm more [blank] than you" so to speak.

Regina Spektor – Daniel Cowman Lyrics 13 years ago
Hmmm...well, I just thought of this--I don't know if anyone else has.

Hanging, drowning, and burning/frying all can be tied to the death penalty. Hanging, for obvious reasons; drowning, for lethal injection; burning/frying, for the electric chair. I don't know how that connects to the rest of the story, but it's an interesting thought.

Also, I was thinking that maybe the "death sentence" of Daniel Cowman has little to do with an actual...well...death sentence. Perhaps it has to do with maybe a deadly disease? In a sense, his "death sentence" is the deadly disease, which is why it's "premature"--he's too young to die, and it's before his time. That can also explain why he feels like "[he doesn't] exist"--he's like a ghost, just wandering until his "sentence" is carried out.

I think this song ultimately means that we're responsible for our own path in life, and therefore our own death. This idea I get from both Daniel's verse and heroin boy--Daniel is afraid heroin boy will kill himself--either intentionally or unintentionally--by drowning in the bath tub, but heroin boy is assured he will die by hanging--once again, either intentionally or unintentionally. He knows life will eventually get him in the end, and his choices will determine his own death--either strangling him like a noose, suffocating him like water, or consuming him like flames. Which is why whatever Daniel Cowman's cause of death was/will be is treated like a "death sentence"--in the end, Cowman dug his own grave, so to speak.

I'm not really sure what this song means...it escapes me.

Regina Spektor – Lacrimosa Lyrics 14 years ago
I just thought of something...perhaps the narrator in this song is actually dead. o.0 The first part of the song talks about burying the dead so they can grow...and then the narrator starts to talk about the rabbits ruining his/her garden. If bodies are crops in this song, then wouldn't it be safe to say that cemeteries are fields...or, on a smaller scale, GARDENS? Perhaps the only crop the narrator is planting is him-/herself! The flowers being eaten--flowers being laid on a gravestone? Makes sense, right?

It could be interpreted in a literal sense--the narrator literally being dead, and mourning his/her own death--or in the metaphysical sense--the narrator is dead in spirit, which is why he/she is Icarus, falling down from grace.

Regina Spektor – Lacrimosa Lyrics 14 years ago
Umm...she wasn't depressed in these days. Sure, she might have suffered some bouts of depression while writing some of her songs, but that was never the main source of her inspiration. And I'd also argue that her newfound popularity has affected her writing style. If you listen to the rest of this album (called "Songs"), there are other, more optimistic songs. And if you hear some of her new songs, you can find the same sense of hopelessness--sometimes on a higher level than this one.

Regina Spektor – Dance Anthem of the 80's Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmm...well, I agree that this song is not so sweet, and is probably about a hooker. Of course, I have my own ideas.

First of all, the title--"Dance Anthem of the 80's." Not only is it styled like a hit dance song of the 80's, but one should also consider what time frame it's based on--the 80's, a time known for its excessive drug-use, casual unprotected sex, the outbreak of AIDS, Reagan...and many more horrible things. (xD)

Also the meat market reference...meat can also be used in a sexual way. "Meat" as in "human flesh"--perhaps the corner where the narrator works? Or maybe a place where people are constantly rubbing against each other, "flesh" to "flesh." A DANCE club, maybe? It is a "Dance Anthem" after all.

Then in the last few stanzas--how she walks through the streets,"like a drunk, but not." Perhaps she's not so much drunk, but high? Or even just tired? Working long hours, having sex for money. And her "slip showing a little"...could be her bra, money, or her hook-up. The "addiction to hands and feet" referencing drug use would make sense...if it weren't for the fact druggies usually inject in the arms. But it can work, I suppose...of course, it can also suggest a fetish.

Regarless of how you read into the lyrics and their meanings, I think the overall attitude is clear. A hooker disillusioned with this sex/drug-crazed society that is one of the defining factors of the 80's. She knows the long term effects of this lifestyle, and yet--for one reason or another--cannot seem to break those chains.

...One thing I wanted to say. This may not even be set in the 80's. It could simply be reminesced from the 80's, or intends to remind one of that sort of lifestyle.

Well...I think this song is about someone who has turned his/her life around--started going to church, got sober, etc.--but is either forcing the change upon his-/herself, or has not completely cast out his/her demons. 1) I realize these lyrics are off--big time. I had to go by ear with low quality headphones, and even lower quality recording. So...if anyone can help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated.

2) I'm sad no one else has posted for this band. I really liked them when they were together. Sure, their break-up led to Quiet Science--which I LOVE--but still.

3) I think this song is about change, and trying to cope with those changes....just trying to see the good in it all--the things that will never change--and not focus on the negative.

Modest Mouse – Float On Lyrics 14 years ago
Well...I'm torn between two ideas.

This song could be a sarcastic punchline to naive optimism, that feeling hopeful about what's up ahead is both foolish and pointless. (This idea I get from the music video, which is AWESOME.)

Either that, or I'm thinking this song is about going nowhere with your life, or going somewhere you don't want to go, and having no control over it. He backs into a cop car, and is left with a busted car. He says something personal to someone--possibly a love interest?--and the person hardly acknowledges it. He loses all his money, and loses his job so he can't get it back. The person also loses his/her job, and yet it barely even offers a connecting point for them. Both of them are just sort of..."floating on," and not sure where they're going, or if they're even going there. But at the same time, it can't be stopped--"even if things end up a bit too heavy, [they]'ll all float on," and with that they only have two options: drown, or keep floating.

3OH!3 – Don't Trust Me Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with stina510...this song is about more than a distrust of "hoes." It's about the inability for either sex to really trust each other. The misogynistic man who wants some cheap thrills; the girl who's been hurt by another lover ("bruises cover your arms")...it's just about the general desire to remain single and uncommitted, a phase most people go through at one point in their lives.

Overall, there's not much to get from this song...but I'm not so high and mighty that I can't enjoy a good dance song.

Regina Spektor – Hotel Song Lyrics 14 years ago
I believe this song revolves around different characters and different perspectives, including the hotel itself; either that, or each character represents different aspects of the hotel. The "Come into my world" stanza--either coming from the hotel or someone else--expresses a feeling of wanting more people to...well..."come into [his/her/its] world"; however, people who go to this hotel only stay temporarily--those people will "never be [his/her/its] fool," or "dear friend." The "Floaters in my eyes," represents the escapism hotel can represent, and how ineffective it is; the woman worrying about "whose the girl wearing [her] dress" represents the infidelities that occur in the hotel; the person who buys a smile from the porter represents the everlasting silence that a hotel has about such things, so long as you pay the right price.

Overall...I think this song is about wanting some stability in your life--in the form of a home, a belief, or the promise of a constant lover/friend/relative--but not being able to obtain it...much like a hotel cannot obtain a permanent resident.

...?

A few problems with your argument:

1) People here have already stated they believe that the color "blue" is meant to represent sadness in this equation before you decided to comment.

2) You do realize that songs can be interpreted in a variety of ways, including the color blue? In fact, studies show that when our minds process the color "blue," our heart beat slows, giving us a sense of mellow contentment--not sadness.

Anyway, unless you've spoken to Regina herself and asked what the song meant, I don't think you should be taking such a high and mighty position on it.

Regina Spektor – Genius Next Door Lyrics 14 years ago
As someone else has said, I highly doubt Regina wrote an entire song about a teenager who was into eroticasphyxiation and died one night--it's just not Regina's style. Yes, she writes some weird stuff, sometimes sexual, but it's never that simple.

Personally, I think it's simply about a male teenager who's intelligent, but is closed off from the rest of the world--of course, he closes himself off, assuming that no one would understand him by never talking to anyone and being sure to avoid any social connections. Teenagers, of course, would probably find his lack of communication skills odd, and think him weird--girls as well. (And yes, this boy is probably a virgin.) When he's not working as a waiter, he's sitting around at his house "getting high and mumbling German fables," as if trying to flaunt his genius to some imaginary being. The lake is more of an idea to the boy--"if [he] just [held] in his breath 'till [he] came back up in full," not alive, but no longer breathing. (How the dead float in water.) "He swims midway into that porridge," as if contemplating whether or not to drown himself and end the pain--the thought of suicide is "the secret he was keeping." It seems to me he does end up killing himself, and a lot of hubbub is made about it, though it's hardly genuine. The boy "dreaming that the antidote is orgasm" is dead, but I think orgasm is seen more as an idea. Either, death to him seemed to be the best release, or, as a virgin, he probably felt very lonely and felt maybe if he had sex, he would be more likeable to others. Despite being a genius,he was still a child with very simple solutions to his problems, which is why he is both "the genius next door" and the "foolish child."

I have two theories on the first stanza--"Some said the local lake had been enchanted..."
One is that it was hard for the people to understand how a child could die in such a shallow lake, without even guessing that it could've been suicide--they can't even imagine a teenage boy doing something like that. So they come up with different reasons--perhaps the lake was enchanted, and killed all those who swim in it, or the weather was so bad that that the child couldn't swim out. The local kids, who couldn't understand how someone could drown in such a shallow lake, would just joke about the event. They call it the "porridge" because...well, just imagine swimming through a lake of porridge--"it's as thick as butter," and easy to drown in. (Possibly implying how the look down on the genius and find him to be a loser.)
The second theory is that, in order to understand why the boy killed himself, folk stories were created--like how we may often say a mansion is haunted because of what happened to a previous owner, the locals made up stories about how the boy died and why he did it, mixing up truth and delusion. Soon, the kids just started joking about it, and call it the "porridge" because...well, the first theory explains why.

My Chemical Romance – The Sharpest Lives Lyrics 14 years ago
...The entire album is a concept one--meaning each song has something to do with a STORY. The band has said multiple times that this album revolves around one character--The Patient. The Black Parade is carrying The Patient to his death, and on the way, they are showing what his life was like.

This song is about The Patient, NOT the band. This is how The Patient lived--getting drunk, picking up on women, overall living a very unsubstantial lifestyle, where it's completely obvious he's just trying to die.
