Depeche Mode – Should Be Higher Lyrics | 9 years ago |
Not sure what happened here, but someone posted the lyrics for Halo here, not Should Be Higher. I hope someone fixes the error. Should Be Higher lyrics are... I dream of a day when I dare to believe you're the answer When the shame and the guilt are removed and the truth appears Oh the touch of your hand, I lose who I am if I want to I try to resist but succumb to the bliss of your kiss You should be higher I'll take you higher Don't be afraid You'll just have to pray Your lies are more attractive than the truth Love is all I want Your lies are written down there in your book Love is all I want Your arms are infected They're holding the truth Oh stop all your crying This one you'll lose You should be higher I'll take you higher Don't be afraid You'll just have to pray Your lies are more attractive than the truth Love is all I want Your lies are written down there in your book Love is all I want You should be higher You should be higher |
Depeche Mode – In Sympathy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I see all adults in this one, no children. I see a female Domme surrounded by adult slaves and "their tedious obscenities". And the songwriter is describing how the slaves act towards Her and how She interacts with them. Complimenting Her with admiration. |
Depeche Mode – Wrong Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Hmmmmm... lots of people reading the meaning as some sort of lifespan experience, when I'm seeing it as an individual experience between the songwriter and one other person. Musicians see lots of different women. Gore, part of the BDSM community, has different experiences with different Doms and subs. Then sometimes writes a poem/lyric to go along with each experience, some making it on albums. So I see this one as a Domme who has Brainwashed him for the duration of the encounter between the two. Telling him he's wrong, over and over, until he finally admits he's wrong about everything and then after the experience, he writes it down and it became a song. Then he goes on to find another set of Doms/subs to play with to have another new experience. So it's not a "lifespan" experience with a duration of years. |
Depeche Mode – One Caress Lyrics | 14 years ago |
ON FANS....Lanakael...trying to peg the fans by lyrical interpretation in a round about sort of way??? ;-) I can make it more simple =) Since One Caress is from Songs of Faith and Devotion, to quote from an interview with regards to religious imagery on the album, Martin Gore says, “I think a lot of people missed the point. The songs are not obviously religious. They’re not songs about religion in a conventional sense, and I think that’s what’s missed a lot... People who are real fans seem to get the point." http://www.lostechoes.net/?p=1024 Plugged In Article Sofad, March 15, 2003 I'd go a step further and distinguish between "real fans" and "true fans." And this in general applies to all fans in all Depeche Mode forums based off what I've seen on the internet since 1995. A TRUE FAN: does not ignore interviews or statements by band members about s&m imagery in the lyrics and has a general understanding of that imagery in the lyrics. A REAL FAN: does not ignore interviews or statements by band members about s&m imagery in the lyrics, but tends to come from the Vanilla World and does not understand s&m imagery. So they offer an alternate relationship to the lyrics through Vanilla Eyes. A Real Fan does not claim to be appalled by s&m interpretations of lyrics, nor do they attack those who see s&m interpretations. A Real Fan would know that if they attacked a S&M interpretation of a song, that they might also be attacking the band they claim to love. A NAIVE FAN: doesn't read interviews, doesn't know what s&m is, just likes the music cause of the tune. A JUST-WANT-TO-HAVE-FUN FAN: interprets a large portion of songs as being about sex, drugs, or other ways that the person just wants to have fun. A STUCK-ON-VANILLA FAN: is a fan that has vanilla sex with their significant other on a regular basis to Depeche Mode music. At least they're having fun! =) But they usually can't disentagle their personal vanilla sex relationships from the lyrics and tend to see every song as being about their specific boyfriend, husband, girlfriend or wife in a vanilla way. In some rare cases, a Stuck-on-Vanilla fan will see a song interpretation by a True Fan or a Real Fan as an attack on their significant other, when the song is not about their significant other. A MENTALLY-IN-NEED FAN: (usually temporary condition but in some cases not) relates to the music in a time of need and sees something in a song that helps them through their troubled time. The songs they pick are nearly always the songs with sadomasochistic themes which they relate to in a time of personal depression and see as uplifting in their time of need. And that's because masochism is not depression, but rather masochism is about AROUSAL.The only time to be concerned is when a troubled fan tries to sustain their personal depression by rejecting song interpretations of TRUE FANS and REAL FANS. A BIBLE THUMPER FAN: ignores interviews and statements by band members about s&m imagery in the lyrics and ignores statements by band members that the songs are not religious and uses the lyrics to preach their own personal religious message. Some put down the TRUE FANS and REAL FANS trying to sustain the behavior of using the lyrics to preach their personal religious beliefs. A COMPLETELY DELLUSIONAL FAN: rejects interviews and statements by band members about their own lyrical meaning. They have a dellusional idea about the songs and band members and when they see other fans in a discussion of lyrics, they attack whichever fans offer a lyrical interpretation that is at odds with their dellusional beliefs. In some cases, they post threats to get a topic closed (in order to sustain their dellusion by silencing others' speech), they launch complaints about true fans and real fans objecting to their interpretations of songs (in order to sustain their personal dellusion), and sometimes they'll cyberstalk other fans across threads and into different forums to continue complaints about fans who's lyrical interpretations might shatter their personal dellusion. A Completely Dellusional Fan has no respect for the lyrical interpretations of others and no appreciation of the diversity of different fans who might offer something in a song that they might have missed. |
Depeche Mode – When The Body Speaks Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It's about a masochist needing physical pain. "To the soul's desires The body listens What the flesh requires Keeps the heart imprisoned" A masochist's flesh requires physical pain. "What the spirit seeks The mind will follow When the body speaks All else is hollow" A masochist's body speaks for physical pain. "I'm just a slave here At the mercy Of a girl" And he's praying to a woman. He's taken the pain praying for something else. "Oh I need your tenderness Oh I need your touch Oh I dream of one caress Oh I pray too much" And I guess he's not getting what he's praying for. ;-) |
Depeche Mode – Judas Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song makes me laugh every time I hear it. Martin is the Judas, luring a Vanilla into BDSM. His Vanilla-Luring Style is really quite cute. "So walk on barefoot for me Suffer some misery If you want my love" "You can fulfill Your wildest ambitions And I'm sure you will Lose your inhibitions So open yourself for me Risk your health for me If you want my love" In other words, he's telling the little Vanilla that if he/she wants to be loved...then they must take the pain and torture. |
Depeche Mode – The Love Thieves Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Sounds like Martin's in a dungeon with a bunch of other slaves worshipping a human Goddess. "All the clerks and the tailors The sharks and the sailors" The slaves are HER disciples, (god and jesus are no where to be found in her dungeon as she is the Goddess) "Alms for the poor For the wretched disciples And the love that they swore With their hearts on the bible Beseeching the honour To sit at your table And feast on your holiness As long as they're able" And the slaves are being punished... "They're crooked love thieves And you are their jailor" |
Depeche Mode – Surrender Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Another song of Martin in bondage. "Shackled like an animal" "Laying on your holy bed by the hallowed door Feeling like an infidel Not worthy of your call" And once again, he surrenders control to another Dominant. "I'm a man of flesh and bone Rapture Rushing through my veins Passion Flaming In my heart Heavenly surrender once again Yeah" |
Depeche Mode – Sister Of Night Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I always saw it as Martin, the masochist, singing to a female masochist as the two are both slaves to someother Dominant...he calls to the female masochist... "Calling you through flesh that burns" "Sweet sister Just feel me I'm trembling" He's been tortured and his skin is on fire and he's trembling. The female masochist was tortured more... "And your body's a fire An inferno that never ends An eternal flame That burns in desire's name" The female masochist is trying to impress the other company... "Sister of night In your saddest dress As you walk through the light You're desperate to impress So you slide to the floor Feeling insecure" It's almost like he's trying to pick up on the other masochist. "Breaking down your will To move in for the kill" "Oh sister Come for me Embrace me Assure me Hey sister I feel it too" |
Depeche Mode – Higher Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I really don't see God, nor Jesus Christ at all in this song, but perhaps a Goddess that he is submitting to. "I can taste more than feel This burning inside is so real I can almost lay my hands upon The warm glow that lingers on" The warm glow that lingers on is a human Goddess. The "burning" is that Martin--the masochist--has already been tortured and is experiencing that burning sensation from being tortured and he is in full submission to his human Goddess... "I surrender all control" "I surrender heart and soul" And he's saying that male submission to a Dominant is a "higher love". |
Depeche Mode – Fragile Tension Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Looks like the site got the lyrics wrong. From the inside sleeve of Sounds of the Universe the lyrics are supposed to read... There's a fragile tension That's keeping us going It may not last forever But oh when it's flowing There's something magical in the air Something so tragic we have to care There's a strange obsession That's drawing us nearer We don't understand it It never gets clearer There's something mystical in our genes So simplistic it kicks and screams Oh when we're teetering On the edge of collapse Nothing can keep us down There's a dizzying feeling That's keeping us flying Through glittering galas Without even trying There's something radical in our hands Nothing logical to our plans --------------------------- Makes me think of a suspension party. Where the people hook metal rings inside their skin and they suspend themselves from the ceiling by their skin......flying through the air held up by their own bodies. |
Depeche Mode – Barrel Of A Gun Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I don't know why, but I can't seem to take the gun in this one seriously. And maybe I'm wrong, but to me it seems more like edgeplay BDSM and the gun might just be a prop in the roleplay. He's clearly being tortured by some Dominant...he says... "This twisted, tortured mess This bed of sinfulness who's longing for some rest and feeling numb" And whoever the Dominant is, he/she has been threatening him, BDSM interrogation tactics with a gun as a prop.... "Whatever I've done I've been staring down the barrel of a gun" It could have been really funny to watch ;-) |
Depeche Mode – Freestate Lyrics | 14 years ago |
He describes the location he's at... "Step out of your cage And onto the stage" "Tune into the lonely voices Talking of their only choices" So it's a room full of people with a stage and a cage (cages), presumably with different slaves in each cage and the audience is choosing which slaves they'd like to see in the S&M stage show. He says he relates to one of the slaves in the cages... "I can hear your soul crying Listen to your spirit sighing I can feel your desperation Emotional deprivation" And he tells the slave who's being flogged, whipped, caned, whatever... "Let yourself go Let yourself go Let your feelings show" He sings to the slave released from the cage... "I can taste the tears falling The bitterness inside you calling Yearning for a liberation Emotional emancipation" And as the slave is being physically whipped, flogged, etc., he says.... "Let yourself go Let yourself go Let your senses overflow" And as the slave on the stage is bound in bondage and can't escape, he says... "Freedom awaits Open the gates Open your mind Freedom's state " That freedom is a state of mind, even if the slave is bound in bondage. That the physical restraints of bondage allow for the experience of a higher state of mind of freedom. It's an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL song for one masochist to sing to another masochist! |
Depeche Mode – Home Lyrics | 14 years ago |
well, the song isn't about his real home because he lives in a multimillion dollar home. And the first line of the song says... "Here is a song from the wrong side of town" So it's not even his neighborhood. He describes the location: "where I'm bound" "a cage" "the heaviest cross ever made" "a gauge of the deadliest trap ever laid" So it's someone's dungeon with a cage for slaves, a flogging cross, and some unusual unknown trap of dungeon equipment and he claims to be "bound" in bondage, which he further describes... "The heat and the sickliest sweet smelling sheets that cling to the backs of my knees" So he's tied to a bed. And as so, he submits to the woman that her dungeon feels like "home" and that he always should have known that a dungeon was his home. He's "singing tears" because he's been physically punished. |
Depeche Mode – One Caress Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Well. I can't leave this one on suicide, so I have to say something. If Martin is down on his knees, praying to a woman, he's not in a church! Besides Martin's not a Catholic, thus wouldn't be a kneeler in church anyway. If he's kneeling before a woman and saying that only the woman has the strength to bear the pain, then it's a dom/sub situation. The kneeler, the sub, does not own his own body, the domme does. So if he's getting a whipping on his body by the domme, since his body belongs to the domme (not his) then while she whips him, she's bearing the pain. And he's being punished for being a dog--his sins. |
Depeche Mode – Little 15 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I guess some people don't realize that ages in England are different than America. At age 16 in England, is the graduation from High School and when kids move out of their homes and are supposed to support themselves. That would be the equivalent of age 18 in America. So if a Brit is singing about "15", then that's the year before becoming an adult, which would be the equivalent of singing about age "17" in America. |
Depeche Mode – Sea Of Sin Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I see the Sea of Sin as all the fans willing to jump into bed with them. They leave home and there's always fans out there ready to jump in the sack. to moobyjoe, Dave didn't write the song. And they probably all use condoms anyway. That's a low blow. |
Depeche Mode – Lilian Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I ask two questions. #1- why is a man in his 40s singing about a woman wearing fancy dresses and expensive jewelry in a classroom setting? #2-why is he singing blood? Since the only way #1 could be possible is if he's in a classroom setting LOOKING AT a woman wearing fancy dresses and expensive jewelry to compare it to his upbringing IS IF he's in the classroom section of a dungeon. Well, then I'd have to say this is another BDSM song by DM. And if he's singing blood (Question #2), then he's probably getting a serious whipping in the classroom by Lilian. But not to worry, he says, "Pain and misery Always hit the spot." And it was ONLY "In the name of fun". And if he hears her voice and has no choice, well, then I guess Lilian would be in complete control. And if he leaves the classroom dungeon, and can't get her voice out of his head, well, that's the type of session that songs are written about. |
Depeche Mode – John The Revelator Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Gosh, I would think this song to be obvious. It's flat out saying that John, the writer of the Book of Revelation is a fraud and a false prophet, thus the predictions in Revelation would also be false. The book of Revelation wasn't a book to begin with. It was originally a set of letters to 7 churches in the Roman Empire by a man named John who was predicting the end of a city named Har Megiddo (Armegeddon in English). Only John who wrote it, claimed that 666 would be the destroyer of the city of Har Megiddo. 666 in numerology is allegedly Nero Caesar's name in numbers. Har Megiddo was destroyed, but not by Nero Caesar as predicted and the prediction didn't quite happened the way it was foreseen. But no one could understand the code and imagery that John was using, so later it was turned into the Book Revelation. Those people changing the letters to 7 churches into a book of the Bible, most likely didn't translate it properly, may have twisted the letters around. And even though Har Megiddo was already destroyed, there was no second coming up Christ upon the city's destruction, making John the writer, a false prophet. Revelation was never about the "end of the world", it was only about the end of a city called Har Megiddo which is gone, Christ never came upon its destruction, thus, John the Revelator would be a false prophet. |
Depeche Mode – In Your Room Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I don't know where people are getting drugs out of this song. I see it as flat out BDSM. Looks like the torture session was done by candlelight with some sensory deprivation added in. Looks like he was well trained to know that his skin did not belong to him, it belonged to the mistress. His breathing and body didn't belong to him, but belonged to the mistress. And he must have been tied down for a pretty long time. |
Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I guess everyone is seeing their personal religious beliefs as meaning to the song, rather than checking out the band's religious beliefs. I remember reading in an article a long time ago, that either Martin and Andy met in a Methodist church or were both in a Methodist's boys choir, with some combination of an Anglican church. I wish I could remember the article that I read. Either way it means some religious upbringing in Anglican and Methodist churches, by both Andy and Martin. If you know anything about Methodists, it is a religion based on "reason methods". Children rased Methodist are encouraged to question the Bible. It was the belief of John Wesley, founder of Methodist church, that if the Bible was a true book, then it should uphold questioning and reason. So while other Christian religions would slap or shun a child for questioning the Bible, Methodist children were encouraged. Being that so, there would be absolutely nothing wrong with Martin questioning the Bible, nor religion, nor God as was done so in Blasphemous Rumours. It would actually be a typical way that any person raised Methodist would do. So if Martin finds through his reasoning and logic methods that "God has a sick sense of humour." That's perfectly fine for any Methodist. By the way, I know a lot of people mistake Martin or DM for being Catholic because of a lot of references to "being on his knees". Methodists don't really kneel in church, unless during communion at a fancy older church. That's not what Martin's "kneeling" is about in other songs. |
Depeche Mode – A Pain That I'm Used To Lyrics | 16 years ago |
hmm. don't see how it could have to do with marriage or divorce. I actually see it as Martin seemingly disappointed by some domme. "Can you say what you're trying to play anyway I just pay while you're breaking all the rules" "I don't need to believe all the dreams you conceive You just need to achieve something that rings true" "All this running around, well it's getting me down Just give me a pain that I'm used to" Like the domme is making him be a chore boy or something and trying to do head games, or talking about herself, or something not quite right. And Martin just wants the pain he's used to, telling her she needs to achieve something that rings true. |
