America – Sister Golden Hair Lyrics 16 years ago
who shoved a spoon up rigel's ass? good lord.

i can't see the nun angle, either. there just isn't enough to back it up. the first two lines, though, really describe how I feel... well, just about every weekend. you wake up sunday, ready to do something important, and you start feeling unproductive (depressed, as he says). you do nothing all day but goof off and prepare for the week ahead. saying "i got myself undressed" is symbolic of that. it also plays in with talk about the altar later in the verse. I think the whole sunday-altar religious thing is there, but it's just a theme and not the actual subject of the song. there isn't a single definitive reference to religion or nuns in the whole song.

one should not overly complicate lyrics... if it looks like a love song and sounds like a love song... well, i think it's a damned love song. ... which is also an amazing piece of music.

Foo Fighters – Home Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is perfect and beautiful. I don't think I've listened to it yet without crying.

It seems like most of the song is trying to process the fact that he's away from his home, but then at the end comes to terms with it. Initially he's lamenting a number of things: "I wish I were with you", "All of these moments I'll never replace", etc.

But at the end, it closes with:
...People I've loved, I have *no regrets*
...Some I remember, some I forget
...Some of them living, some of them dead
...All I want is to be home.
It seems like he's either coming to terms with it, or getting more desperate. I can't tell... but I don't really care. I love this song regardless.

The Velvet Underground – After Hours Lyrics 16 years ago
Am I the only one who hates this song? Maureen has no range, and her voice really bores me after hearing the rest of the songs on the album.

"After Hours" always seemed to me like the kind of song a modern band would hide at the end of their final track after 7 minutes and 32 seconds of silence. It's just not strong enough to be on a VU record. Not with everything else they've done.

With that said, I do really like the lyrics. Completely out of character for VU, but on their own they hold up. I love "oh, but people look well in the dark"... but overall it just doesn't fit... especially after Murder Mystery (which is a train wreck of another sort entirely).

The Velvet Underground – Sister Ray Lyrics 16 years ago
"Now, who's that knocking
Who's that knocking on my chamber door"

That part reminds me of the beginning of "The Raven" by Poe:
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping / As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. / `'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door / Only this, and nothing more.'

It's not an exact match, but how often do you use "chamber door" in everyday speech? In any case, it's probably a sarcastic reference, if any. The lyrics are just dripping with sarcasm and self-loathing, merely in the fact that someone chose to set them to music at all.

Modest Mouse – Make Everyone Happy/Mechanical Birds Lyrics 16 years ago
Whenever I see "mechanical birds", I always think of William Butler Yeats' "Sailing to Byzantium", where he (somewhat obtusely) refers to a Byzantine emperor who owns mechanical, golden birds that sit in the trees in his garden and sing.

Though I seriously doubt this is what they were going for with the song. Just wanted to add that...

I love the song... it's very simple and uses the music as well as the lyrics to get its point across... hence the two titles.
