Charlene – I've Never Been To Me Lyrics 13 years ago
You know, I kinda understand why people think this song is against womenslib, although I don't agree with that statement. The fact that the song was written by 2 men, to me doesn't mean it's automatically from a male perspective. I believe that it's very well possible that a male can write from a female perspective. I think it's about an independent woman who regrets some of the choices she made earlier in life, and idealizes the life she ran away from, trying to escape the life her parents lived.

To me the song is about choice. To me it's about someone who has been there, and shares her knowledge that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side. She expresses her believe that the "suburban" lifestyle (marriage, children) is more true and more like paradise, than the life she's been living and that in the public eye is perceived as paradise. The irony is that the grass isn't greener on either side. As paradise doesn't exist (anymore, thanks to Eve ;-)). In my opinion nor "the wild life in Nice" nor "the suburban life" can claim the title of paradise. And I'm quite sure that if the storyteller would go to live the life she describes as true (suburban) she'd be bored in notime.

My favorite line is: "I've spent my life exploring, the subtle whoring"
Think it's the word "subtle". That gives me the feeling that she has class, and wasn't a prostitute. Just a woman who used her body to better herself. And "exploring" tells me she just went for it without too much preconceived notions. Making her regretting some of her explorations "bitter from the sweet".

And I do feel that the sentence "children that might have made me complete", could refer to abortions. As it's not unlikely for someone living on the edge. Also to me it's very likely that she isn't able anymore to become pregnant. Maybe she's too old to have children or maybe because of a decease she got living the wild life.

All in all I fell in love with the melody the first time I heard this song back in 1982, and it was the first single I bought. And yes I'm a woman too.
