| I believe this may have inspired the idea of the song, but it certainly is not all there is to it. I've said it time and again, everyone talks about what Pete said in an interview. Pete has admitted to being misleading in interviews in regards to song meanings because he doesn't like to reveal it to preserve the listening experience and let people use the song in a way to help them rather than just understand what was going through his mind. Chevelle does not use their fame or music as a soap box to vent or as a podium to influence others. How is it too out there? First, the name of the album is Sci-Fi Crimes, secondly, have you seen the album art? Third, have you listened to the entire album?? Now if you really take a look at it, Madofscars idea can really go along side the supernatural meaning, as perhaps the sightings can be the cause or even the effect of being "mentally unhealthy" as he says. I see where he's coming from. But the point is, you can see debates like this over a majority of Chevelle's songs. That's what makes their writing so amazing, it can be taken so many different ways depending on how you feel when you first heard it. I like this idea, and I relate to it more, but I have to say the supernatural description holds a lot more water and fits the feel of the song and album. |

| Chevelle does this a lot. I am originally from CHicago and had an opportunity to actually meet them before. I've heard them tell different stories about the same song in different interviews. Pete has said he doesn't like to reveal what they actually wrote the song about, because it takes away from the listening experience and the listener's ability to use the song for how it can help them. That being said, I think in some instances they do reveal the true origins of their songs, and sometimes I think they just mess with all of us make stuff up. At one point Pete and Sam claimed that the entire Sci-Fi Crimes album was nothing more than satire and was just poking fun at deeper meanings. I don't buy that, there is far too much emotion in some of these songs to believe that. I think they just want to put out enough different stories that people will say, their just messing with us and take the song for what it means to them. That's what music is really about, and I kind of like Chevelle's approach to an unending barrage of inquiry on the meaning of their music. | Actually you are quite wrong about the band. None of them have ever actually stated they are Christian but Pete has mentioned being religious. Sam has been quotedd as saying "we're recovering Catholics". Pete Actually gets quite irritated when people put religious connotations on their music, as he has stated time and time again that those values do not come out in his writing, very intentionally. He believes religion is a personal value and should remain as such. And has said many many times that he is careful NOT to include such values in his writing because it is not his desire to influence religious beliefs using his status or music, and he will not use the stage as a podium to preach.To this day I do believe Pete is probably Christian of some denomination, although he has never really confirmed that for reasons explained above. Sam pokes a lot of fun at religion, so I'm not sure where he really stands. But that's exactly what Chevelle wants, for you to focus on the music not on their personal values. | While I am here 8 years later than the rest of you, I have always liked this song and recently found it applies to me very much. It's quite simple, although Darksilver could be right, I think it means his lover has another lover. He his most likely aware of this and at times is ok with it, and other times it makes him miserable. He can't have all of her, but he loves her so he takes all he can. It's hard to pinpoint the exact feeling. And reading back through this I believe in his case he didn't know about the other lover, but people warned him. "I never heard anyone, I never listened at all." He was so blinded by love, that although he knew they were probably right, and he believed she had another lover he chose to ignore that fact and have her in anyway he was able to. | |

| Also I think the song in it's entirety can be taken as a huge metaphor. The loss IS the cut. But it was so deep, so unexpected that he still can't believe it so it doesn't even hurt yet. He's far from lonely because he doesn't feel lonely yet because he still doesn't feel or believe the loss is real. I think both of these meanings are intentionally present in the song. Bert has a way of writing lyrics that are true both literally and figuratively while still relating to the same feeling. Much more talented than he is given credit for. | |

I think there is somewhat of a reoccurring theme to "In Love and Death". I think when writing this he was obviously going through a lot and wasn't sure how he felt. While everyone may be right, this song very well could be about his dog, but I think it's a bit deeper than that. It's more specifically about him dealing with the loss. I agree that there is a lot here about self mutilation. "So deep that it didn't even bleed and catch me". No secret that there are many people out there that cut when they are depressed. Well, deep cuts usually bleed very little and actually tend to hurt less. They will be more sore while healing but the initial sting isn't the same as a small cut that will sting like crazy and bleed a lot more. I'm not talking out of my ass here, these are facts. So even though he cut so deep because he was that upset he got nothing therapeutic from it. Yes, many find pain and even the sight of their blood therapeutic. "I'll be just fine, pretending I'm not, I'm far from lonely and it's all that I've got." Although he feels very depressed he will be just fine, but he wants someone to notice that he is hurting. He is longing for a deep connection with another person. He says I'm far from lonely, I take that to mean he has a lot of friends and family surrounding him but feeling lonely and miserable is all he feels. All though there are many people that care, he can't feel it. All he can feel is isolated from all of them, because again he lacks the deep connection he desperately needs. It's not so much a cry for pity as much as a desperate need for someone to understand the level of solitude he feels. He sees everyone around him happy and fulfilled, and while he knows that they care, they don't understand him. They don't see the "Sad sorry selfish cry out to the cutter. Cutting trying to picture your black broken heart." Another song obviously, but I feel they are likely written with the same emotions in mind. While it is a sad sorry selfish cry attempt at the connection he seeks with others to make them understand it's still all that he's got. I won't continue further because I think that pretty much sums up my view on this. I may be wrong, but I kind of doubt here. Bert has most definitely been a cutter and used self mutilation as a coping mechanism, his metaphors relating to far too deep to have never felt it. You can't write about something so intensely without ever having felt it. Just one last note "Unharmed I'm losing weight and some body heat" What he's doing isn't really hurting, it's not life threatening really, but it does effect him physically. He doesn't truly desire to die, but as he pushes harder and harder for that connection he maybe feels lightheaded or something from blood loss. He doesn't intend to die, but he needs the mutilation more and more because he still hasn't found the connection. He's unharmed, but as he gets braver and more comfortable with what he is doing he may harm himself later. |

I think you're right on man. To add something, "we can't booth become the same pawn that's meant to fall". I've got a thought on that. I think he's saying we can't all just do as were told and become expendable. If we all do that, then we'll all be gone before long. I think he's basically saying people need to speak up and act. It's time we all stop being pawns and letting everything we know change and even vanish in front of us because of greed and a thirst for power. I think it all comes together on the second verse. Steal from yourselves...and so on. I think you're on track there too. Overall I agree with what you've said here. Chevelle seems to be going in a more political direction with this album, and I for one like it. |

I think it's about how any band can acheive their piece of the pie and not necessarily the fame. Record labels take so much from artists who put everything in and don't get much back these days. But I think it's about pushing yourself to be better and better. "Set the pace again". Kind of saying we need to set the bar here not just try and copy it. Or when you add "A blackout, touching new life" you could take it as a live performance. Their setting the pace of the show, getting the audience involved. | I have to wonder...how does the radio actually fuck up a song? Yes, it becomes WAY over played, I agree. I have a solution though...get a CD player, MP3 player etc...and don't listen to the radio. If this song was never "commercialized" it would be a favorite by many many people out there saying it sucks. It has become the new trend and the cool thing to do to bash bands/songs for being commercialized. Yet you are doing what everyone else is doing...so doesn't that mean you are doing exactly what you are condemning? C'mon people...have a mind of your own. If a song is good it's good. It's still art, and this was a very personal and meaningful song to Lewis I am sure of that. So don't tear it down. I have been in the exact posistion and know what it is to continue to struggle with these kinds of challenges...and songs and art like this really can help a person. When you feel completely alone in this world sometimes music can seem to be your best friend. Music...commercial or not...whatever you sheep wanna call it, has litteraly saved my life multiple times. For that I have respect for any song that is written by the artist/performer themselves, and is written from a real emotion...you can tell when a song is real. There's that little extra soul in the vocals that molds with the music to make the song that can truly touch your soul. THAT is what music is about. | I just want to point out to egb...ven though I am way late and no one will read this, that your theory is possible...but not correct. Had he snorted "a huge line of smack" they would have known this from autopsy. As I would think is common knowledge the drug has different chemical properties in different forms i.e. powder liquid etc...Also if you understand heroin addiction (which I do because my dad was addicted to it) you would know you get nowhere near the high snorting it as you do shooting it. Heroin addicts start out snorting and smoking it and end up shooting it because the high is greater when injected. A hardcore addict such as Cobain was would not have snorted it, he had already started shooting up and once you hit that level you don't turn back. She only cared about herself and how much attention she could get out of being Mrs. Cobain. There are so many more FACTS out there that you have apparently missed. | I really think people are missing something fairly obvious here. If you know anything about Eddie Vedder, you know he had a really screwed up childhood. In fact Once, Breath (I believe), is a series of 3 songs he wrote about his childhood, before he was even in Pearl Jam. Ill take Alive for my example here since its very well known. His mother really did reveal to him somewhere around age 10 that his real father was dead, and the person he thought was his dad was in fact not. "Faces that he sees time again aint that familiar" The person he was raised to believe was his father is not, he knows the face, but it "aint that familiar". "Thoughts arrive like butterflies" to a child things are light and 'floaty' for lack of a better word at the moment. He has thoughts of a real father and a real childhood but he doesnt understand them so he ignores them, because hes never had that luxury. "Whispering hands gently lead him away", leading the child to believe that this is the way things are supposed to be. Leading him away from the dream of a real home. So in this way he IS homeless in a sense. Notice at the end hes saying mommy...mommy. Notice you never hear a PJ song where he talks about a father with any need or affection. | anyone who hasnt seen incubus in concert has missed one of the best shows there is, i have seen a lot of differamt concerts and few compete, incubs is always right on wether its live acoustic on a radio station or just in the studio, brandon is a poet mike is one of the most underated guitar players out there every note is like making love to your ears, jose incredible drummer then dirk and now ben great bass lines that flow thru you and just make you wanna wet your pants and dj kil is the icing on the cake, amazing song, i think the meaning is obvious if you really stop and think about it!
