I don't think that having thoughts about one's own mortality on one's birthday is a 'suicidal tendency' - birthdays are milestones on the path to your eventual demise. What he seems to be doing in the song is motivate himself to live despite the thoughts of death that birthday's bring up. Not arguing that it is depressing, most certainly is. But it is also beautiful.

I don't understand how everyone seems to think that the narrator is complicit in the drug addiction? Where is the first person? Or do you all mean the protagonist of the story? In that case, there is a character with that drug addiction, but not the narrator - he is only describing the circumstances. Please, enlighten me if I've missed something.

I don't see how the song could be about love growing or getting better when there are allusions to a fight just having occurred, with the "she" in the lyrics "trying to cool down" at the sink. Another clue for the fight is the opening spoken word piece, the "problems that disturbed you in the past". The life that is now seething in the tub I suppose is the fruit of the fermentation process, the bacteria growing (I really don't have much of an idea how the process works specifically, so don't take my word for it).

Though it can go both ways, I think that its more likely that the case is that he died. I believe this because I feel like the statement "'Cause you've gone away, where there isn't a telephone wire" would seem irrelevant to what's going on and weird to just throw out there unless it was to give the listener the hint that he's dead, rather than just moved off to some remote place. Also, it seems that it is impossible for the narrator to move on, and I feel that moving on after a relationship would be much harder after someone you loved has died than had left you. But that's just what I think.

Death Cab for Cutie – Line of Best Fit Lyrics

I think the song could be referring to a relationship the narrator has had that has now soured or ended, and the symbolism of the line of best fit is that he can't seem to break from what he believes seems to always happen to him - that he can't sustain a long relationship with someone. As the line describes the average of the data, defining it, in the same way no matter how close he gets to breaking from the average he is unable to break from the line of best fit. Or so is what I think. :)

Now, it may just be that I'm extremely dense, but I don't understand the line that reads "The sun was sinking into the Atlantic". The sun sets in the west relative to one's position, so how could the narrator be in North Carolina or anywhere in America for that matter and see the sun sinking into the Atlantic?

A beautiful fusion of soothing, entrancing instrumentals and heartfelt lyrics. When I learned of Nick Drake, I was surprised by the fact he recorded his music in the 70s, died a while ago, etc. His lyrics, at the very least, sound and feel very modern, at least in this song.

This is a beautiful song, but I dont believe it has to necessarily be about a mother's love for her child. I tihnk the lyrics can be applied to the love shared between a couple. Very chill, very romantic.
