Counting Crows – Einstein On The Beach Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't really give you any clues as to what Einstein on the Beach"(the opera) is about - and I've seen it. TWICE. It's more a performance art piece, but if you want to research it, it was written by Phillip Glass and I think that Mark Morris (the choreographer) had something to do with it

Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London Lyrics 18 years ago
Warren used to play in Don Everly's (of the Everly Brothers) backup band and as he told the story, One Day Everly said he wanted a new song "Something the kids will Dig". So as Warren was writing the song, Waddy Wachtel (amazing guitarist and also a member of the band) stuck his head in the door and said "What are you writing?" Warren said "the Werewolves of London" and Waddy goes "you mean like Ahooooo ...Werewolves of London? Hence the Chorus. Killer song. The line about his "hair was perfect" just slays me

Warren Zevon – Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner Lyrics 18 years ago
I think "bought it" refers to Patti being brainwashed into believing that the way of the gun was a legitimate form of poitical protest. To me the song is about how violence is used worldwide to affect political change and Warren, in this song is railing against violence as a tool of politics

Warren Zevon – Lawyers, Guns, And Money Lyrics 18 years ago
Warren had said that this song was, essentialy, his take on typical American foreign policy in developing nations. It does kinda sum it all up doesn't it?

Bob Dylan – You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go Lyrics 18 years ago
Gotta love Dylan, The only person I know who could successfully rhyme Honolulu and Ashtabula. The man's a freaking genius

Elvis Costello – Watching the Detectives Lyrics 18 years ago
Ah Elvis, only he would write a piece of music that is a perfect musical film noir. Think about the great black and white detective movies, or even better, Chinatown and then put this song with it. Ambiguous heroes, dastardly women and no real moral losestone - good stuff.

ABACAB is just the chord progression of the song

Robert Plant – 29 Palms Lyrics 18 years ago
Written about Alannah Myles (When I hear your voice on the radio). She and Robert were together for a while.

Billy Joel – Zanzibar Lyrics 18 years ago
Supposedly this song was written as a response by Billy to the Steely Dan album, The Royal Scam. There are some really wierd (for Billy Joel) chord progressions in it that apparently were an homage to Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (Steely Dan)

Grateful Dead – 100,000 Tons Of Steel Lyrics 18 years ago
MasterMusician,
The song wsn't written by Robert Hunter. At least the way it's credited on the album is words and music - Brent Mydland. I've become a big fan of Brent's songs over the years, and this one's a gem. It's a standard train/vehicle as woman metaphor, but it's done really well. Great song - underappreciated!

The Clash – Washington Bullets Lyrics 18 years ago
O dear God, I've just gotta correct Punker Ken on this one. Salvador Allende was a democratically elected leader of Chile whom the U.S. decided was too left wing (he was a socialist) As a consequence the U.S. gov't (as they have done many times) backes a right wing, military coup to illegally overthrow the democratically elected government of a foreign nation. This by the way, happened in 1973 - not all that long ago. Allende(once again - democratically elected) was summarily shot. Also killed by the U.S. supported military dictator, Pinochet (you may have heard of him) were Pablo Neruda, the brilliant poet and PEACE ACTIVIST and Victor Jara, a folk singer and peace activist. Jara's death id particularly sad - he was imprisoned with thousands of other men in the Santiago football stadium and when he sang and palyed to comfort his fellow prisoners, he was tortured! They broke all of his fingers, beat him for three days and then shot him ' FOR SINGING SONGS! This song is as passionate an indictment of Western foreign policy as I have ever heard. Thank god for the Clash "the only band that matterd"

The Clash – London Calling Lyrics 18 years ago
This song, and most Clash songs have to be seen as a part of ( and a response to ) the time and place that they were written in. If you were'nt in England in the mid to late '70's it's really hard to imagine how bleak a place it was. There simply were NO jobs. No way to stand up and have any pride and the Government was completely out of touch with both its young citizens and its ever increasing minority population. Taken in that context, most of the songs of the Clash ARE about war; it's just that the war is metaphorical. The war is poor vs rich, young vs old and most importantly lower class against middle and upper class. London Calling is the closest thing to an actual manifesto we ever got out of the clash. What they're sayng is that they ARE London (the youth and the artists and the agitators ) and they are calling out to the apathy of the rest of the country (zombies of death ?) It's a fantastic song, and I'm not sure that they ever equalled this mix of passion and clarity of message again.
