This was the real stand out on the album for me... I love this song it's so beautiful and melancholy. I really related to this song because my mother is Bipolar/has BPD and I've never heard a song that really fits until this one... this song is everything I ever would have wanted to say to her had I known when she was hospitalised all those times. you know what... i always believed in the past relationship thing too... until literally 5 seconds ago when i realised what they meant by these 3 phrases... 1. "and we ignored our others' happy plans for that delicate look upon your face" --> So they're ignoring what her husband wants for their own desires 2. "in a place where no one knows what we have done" --> their relationship is a secret... plus he used present tense suggesting it's still continuing... 3. "and the mild issue of our disgrace" why would it be disgrace if it wasn't secret??? |

Queen Lola... i think your mum is exactly right... To me it's about a relationship where the woman needs to take control... i.e. only comes when she's on top etc... but to make it worse she emasculates him by playing around with gender roles and making him wear woman's clothing and makeup... so she gets off by lowering him down... but at the same time he's a nutter cos he sticks around and despite wanting to get rid of her at the end asks when she'll be coming home... love this song... so passionate. |

i loooooove this so much. A friend reccommended it to me and i've been so addicted... and i have to agree with the majority of people, it uses biblical references but ISN'T religious in my view... i really like the interweaving of all the bible stories although i'd love to find out who Gloria really is... To offer a non-religious reading of it... i'd say it's about losing the perfection of a new relationship... and everything's deteriorating and wrong and missing and it's the death of something amazing. |

i think that this song is kind of casting off the positive and adoring connotations of being in love with an artist... everyone thinks it's so deep and wonderful and beautiful but in this song you can see how the distorted view of an artist could become draining... cos he sees everything so differently to how she does... "You find all of your ugly meanings in the things i found beautiful" etc... and so she's fed up with him... I've never completely worked out the turning out the lights bit... but to me (this is probably wrong but it's my interpretation) she's asking him to stop reading so much into everything cos they're "already home" or already at a comfortable state in their relationship... Beautiful song... in a weird way fits into my life somehow |

when i first listened to this song, i was kinda a bit cheesed at all the cheap rhymes... especially in the bit "There is no reason to feel bad But there are many seasons to feel glad, sad, mad" But by the third or so listening, i realised that these cheap rhymes really make the song... cos to me, it's about falling in love so deeply that all of a sudden the cliches are what you're feeling... and to express yourself in that way, while potentially simplistic, is also so truthful... it's so nice. |

i really don't think that this song is sexy. It's full of despair and anger... Here is Damien's story of what this song was about he actually wrote this as 2 seperate songs... the first section/song he wrote after he found out that his friend liked him... the 2nd after he found out it was all just a sham. When he screams "This is love this is porn..." that really gets to me to the core... i think that this song bred my cynicalness towards love... but oh well... i love the song and i love my cynicalness... |

I'm thinking along similar lines to karadactyl. It's not that they actually sang hallelujah necessarily, but singing hallelujah is a sign of hapiness. So maybe it's more like "Why'd you say you were happy with me if you weren't?" to me, this is a song about taking a relationship slow, because it's special... or at least it is to him... i think there's a strong theme in this song of the relationship being more important to him than it is to the person he's having the relationship with. Which is what makes it so bittersweet. He's found something so special but it's a one way street. |

To me, this song is about her gaining artistic merit from what essentially is death. Inspirational forces that have passed on, and I don't doubt that the allusions to Phantom of the Opera are many... but I think this song is about being envious of the dead in parts... "Or will I see you dear and wish I could come back You found a girl that you could TRULY love again Will you still call for me when she falls asleep Or do we soon forget the things we cannot see" In this section I think it's about her looking on at the living and seeing them move on. Not necessarily a POTO reference because there was no second party in that story.. a truly whimsical song regardless... one of my favourites |

I've read the same quote. I think it's about a breakdown of communication, and finding a way to bridge the gap. And her molding herself allows for that bridge... On a more personal note, to me this song is also about how if in a relationship there's problems, you can't keep on blaming it on basic differences. You can't keep on letting issues such as gender and difference of opinion to keep getting in the way cos those things won't go away and then there'll be no relationship at all. |

I LOVE Tori, and I LOVE Damien Rice which is why this song was such a bitter disappointment. It's a good song. To me it's about secrets and tension... but i think that this song would have been best as a Tori solo and then Tori and Damien could have made something AMAZING. Couldn't you just picture the absolute emotion that the culmination of the feeling behind Silent all these years and Winter paired with The Blowers Daughter and Cannonball? To me this song is a kind of open letter to all women. Mary is a very standard female name and I think it's talking about a girl's loss of innocence "waking up" and comparing that to the physical changes of the time. Also, the Jimi Hendrix thing makes sense... cos like it says in the song "Just like Jimmy said, don't be afraid" and in the Hendrix song it goes "Somewhere a queen is weeping Somewhere a king has no wife And the wind, it cries mary" also talking about feminine independance. |
