Beck – Qué Onda Guero Lyrics 15 years ago
This perfectly captures LA in the mid 90's for me, back when Beck still lived in the neighborhood, when I was growing up. Such funny references. Cap'n Corks liquor store on Hillhurst. Mango ladies and the elote man. Rampart police department. Ceramics class at LACC (LOL). "Vamos a jugar futbol alli en el Gree-fith Park"

Kanye West – Homecoming (feat. Chris Martin) Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the line "My name is Wendy and, I like to blow trees". The first time I took the time to listen to the lyrics I went "Ohhhh shit.... WINDY, not Wendy."

Arcade Fire – Windowsill Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not a huge fan of this band, but this is an amazing song. But the interpretations of it being about Mean Ol' Uncle Sam cheapens the song. I get images of millions of young adults with the thoughts expressed in the song.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics 17 years ago
When I hear this song I picture the bombing of London in WWII. I'm not saying that's the meaning but just the imagery I picture.

Pavement – Unfair Lyrics 17 years ago
California sure is a great state, huh?

The Clash – The Magnificent Seven Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes, probably the first British rap song. This was definitely the first time a rock band had ever done rap(Bob Dylan was rapping on Subterranean Homesick Blues in my opinion but the song was still largely rock). And I don't know if there were any Brits rapping at the time since it was still largely at a New York thing during 1980. Newtrament and The Ruthless Rap Assassins didn't show up until a couple years later.

Dead Kennedys – I Fought The Law Lyrics 17 years ago
Another bit of trivia: The cover of the Dead Kennedys first album is a picture taken during the White Night Riots where San Francisco's gay community rioted after the light sentence given to Dan White. Harvey Milk became a martyr to the gay community and recently SF decided to build a statue of him downtown.

Dead Kennedys – Stars And Stripes Of Corruption Lyrics 17 years ago
The essential Dead Kennedys song. Jello's sarcastic humor is still there, but it's focused completely on the government and how badly it's fucked up the country he loves.

Bob Dylan – Catfish Lyrics 17 years ago
Catfish Hunter was a Hall of Fame pitcher who left the Oakland(previously Kansas City) A's for the New York Yankees after Charley Finley didn't give him the money that George Steinbrenner did. Reggie Jackson, who is mentioned in the song, became his teammate in 1977 and they won the World Series that year. I like the allusion to Maggie's Farm after the first chorus.

Nas – Who Killed It? Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song. The meaning is pretty obvious if you read the lyrics or get the idea of the album. The beat and Nas' flow reminds me of MF Doom.

Beastie Boys – Professor Booty Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes. The last verse by MCA(So many wack MCs...) is directed at Serch.

Beastie Boys – B-Boy Bouillabaisse Lyrics 17 years ago
Even though they left Def Jam and moved to L.A. to make amazing music with The Dust Brothers and eventually become Silver Lake dads, they never forgot their roots. This song is a love letter to New York.

Ghostface Killah – Underwater Lyrics 17 years ago
Allahu Akbar basically means "God is great" in Arabic.

I love this crazy. Great shit to visualize: Ghostface swimming and seeing mermaids that look like Halle Berry, Noah's Ark, Jew and Muslims praying together, and SpongeBob in a Bentley.

Bob Dylan wrote this song after hearing that Pete Maravich had died at 41 while playing a pick-up basketball game.

Thin Lizzy – The Boys Are Back In Town Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know if it was about boys returning from war, but if it was, I doubt it was about Vietnam. Troops coming back from that place weren't exactly singing and shouting about spending 15 years for a lost cause. It sounds more like WWII even though Ireland didn't fight in that war(Northern Ireland did however). Boys coming back from WWII were very joyous and happy.

N.E.R.D. – Wonderful Place Lyrics 18 years ago
Song about a drug experience, either shrooms or acid since the imagery talks about things you'd see while hallucinating. I mean, in the first line he says "So high". Not to hard to figure out.

I was confused about that "1954" part too. It has to be intentional because otherwise Pharell is a dumbass.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Magic Johnson Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song about the greatest basketball player of all time. I saw RHCP play with Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube and Flea was wearing this great throwback Byron Scott jersey with old-school shorts too.

Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher Lyrics 18 years ago
doortodoor, the pitcher he's talking about is 100% Sandy Koufax. Cathedral doesn't have to mean a place of religous worship. Both Ebbet's Field and Dodger Stadium, his two home stadiums, are/have been referred to as cathedrals like many baseball stadium(Yankee Stadium).
