Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I take that back Dopamen, your interpretation was actually really well thought out. |
Muse – Hate This and I'll Love You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I didnt like this song at first, because I thought it was another teen angst relationship song. But after reading the lyrics I think the song is about the Human Race's 'relationship' with god and nature and the earth. It is a comparison or a double entendre on humanity's responsiblity to upkeep the planet in the same way that he is 'whipped' by his girlfriend. The first half of the song is stating that the human race is tired of succumbing to slavery, and servitude to the earth. And the second half is saying that we are growing stronger and we will conquer the world, or god or some shit like that. The relationship between man and woman is a metaphor for the relationship between mankind and the world. I didnt want to quote, cause the whole song is a quoteable for this idea. Could you just read this and then the song and give me your thoughts on how it relates. I know it sound kind of apocalyptic and psychopathic but I think that is what it is about. At least I hope it isnt just teen angst relationship crud. |
Soundgarden – Beyond the Wheel Lyrics | 18 years ago |
perhaps this song is saying we are the devil, as we are so ignorant to the rest of the world. and the tracks being between 665 667 i think it self deprecating to the western world at least. |
Soundgarden – Applebite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Cepheus84, you are the best! |
Soundgarden – An Unkind Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this is definitely one of my favourite songs, i cant believe you dont like it, god bless shepherd for breathing life into soundgarden. |
Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"while it seems obvious that this song is religious, an apocalyptic explanation doesnt hold well with chris cornell's typical message or lyrical style. i interpret it to be about one losing his faith. " D0pamEn i challenge you to make any sense. his 'typical message'. chris at this time was an anti social people, he appreciates his own company and felt uncomfortable when surrounded by people. perhaps it is just possible, JUST MAYBE. that this is a song about being sick of people, and wishing for it to end, his typical message? black hole sun i think is much the same, just pleading for it to all end cause it makes him sick. there is no lyric that relates to losing ones faith. he has stated on numerous occasions that he dislikes the religious right. you amaze me. |
David Bowie – Life on Mars? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song is about the world, and bowie seeing it as a show. and we are all unaware that it is a show, it can be entertaining, but it doesnt seem to make sense which explains why the song makes no sense. is there life on mars like others have said i believe is just longing to be somewhere else, its a dreaming of a place that makes more sense. the lyrics really support this interpretation, and because it is just about the world he can mention anything happening in the world around him whether it be on the media or in the street, anything. so whoever mentioned the strikes at disney where 'the workers have struck for fame' fits in very nicely, the 'lawmen beating up the wrong guy' could be a constant interpretation of currect affairs. but basically its that we are all unaware of our meaningless we are, just like we are in at show thats been written ten times or more and still isnt any good. |
Queen – Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
wow if that is a factual interpretation it makes sense. but i always heard it differently. i thought he was talking about aids and homophobes. i can't believe how wrong i was now but 'death on two legs, your tearing me apart' is strong imagery for how one acquires aids, but perhaps i shouldn't explain. i am glad to know the real meaning now |
Soundgarden – Drawing Flies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
writers block, and he is feeling insecure "Leaning on the pedestal that holds my self denial" about his own lyrical ability... and i love the bit where it seems like he is attacking himself and what he does. "Hey what you yellin' about Conditions, permission, mirrored self-affliction Hey what you yellin' about Sadists' co-addiction, perfect analogies Hey what you yellin' about Conditions, permission, mirrored self-affliction" etc i always hated the idea of writing a song about writers block until i realised that was what this is about, |
Soundgarden – Fresh Tendrils Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sorry i pressed add by accident, um i mean to show that its bad for you 'give me little bits of more than I can take' bits like pills, or acid, or whatever and the fact that it 'sits upon your tounge' yah it seems obviously about drugs 'throw yourself away' what else do drugs do than help yourself lose yourself or journey, and afterwards you feel shameful. i like this song alot more after just figuring out what it meant, oh and thanks for the definiton of the word i think it really applies to my idea 'grasps an object or a plant for support' so yah thats what i got |

Soundgarden – Fresh Tendrils Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i think it is yah about lust with lines like 'Long time coming It seemed to satisfy You longed to taste the shame That everybody tries' i think he feels shameful at how dependent the persona may have been on what he desires 'Give me little bits of more than I can try ' at first i thought it may be about sex but now i think it is about drugs.... taste, everybody tries, |
Soundgarden – Fresh Deadly Roses Lyrics | 19 years ago |
oh how i love this song... i think it is about a woman that is a real heartbreaker, and ends up really hurting the ones she attracts hence the idea of these fresh roses being so deadly.... thats it really he just describes that i think its really easy to figure out after that... |
Soundgarden – Fopp (Ohio Players cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
not much to analyse here just some good fun |
Soundgarden – Flutter Girl Lyrics | 19 years ago |
do you guys like these lyrics...they really bore me and it makes me think of poor susan silver, i liked that album it was alright but these lyrics...i just don't like them. |
Soundgarden – Flower Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yes i completely agree with sommy except.. chris didn't make it very far in school, so its amazing isn't it, i think he got to grade 8 i'd have to check up on it but it doesn't really matter he is very good. |
Soundgarden – Fell on Black Days Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song is about a deep dark depression, where even the ones he loves have been harmed 'Whomsoever I've cradled I've put you down'. it seemed to have come from nowhere and it now has become his life. 'Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile', 'became my life'.. the lyrics are pretty straightforward |
Soundgarden – Face Pollution Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i think he is addressing his audience saying he doesn't want to be our slave and it is making him numb, making him cry, perhaps the face pollution is his worn out face or his tears, but he says 'I fear that I'm in you', fears he is one of us fears he is part of us. He then says that he has been changed by us to be like us 'now that i'm into plastics', 'Now I;ve made a mask'. I think the mask could be him hiding his insecurities to become one of us but he doesn't feel like being part of us. He doesn;t want to be one with us... I don't feel like feeling I don't feel like feeling like you i really think those lines have separate meanings and that the previous line is not just an incomplete version of the second. thats what i got from it. |
Soundgarden – Entering Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i think its about being popular in the music industry on his looks or reputation instead of his skill as a musician instead of "Without a sound" being without his musical talent, and the "million miles" is possibly the area the media has covered, and the wings he has found possible mtv and the radio and any other media...i think that is the most rational interpretation i can think of as he would have been coming into the industry. |
Soundgarden – Drawing Flies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
how cool is the trumpet in the background |
Soundgarden – Drawing Flies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
wierd i always thought the song was about something along those lines i mean he is'sitting here' so i would think he is concetrating on something he has x's in his eyes so i am sure he tired i love it he is'drawing' so it really suggests he is busy writing down what he is thinking 'inspiration for a guillotine' etc' |
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
you made up that catholic stuff, he was a catholic but he didn't go back to the church ever...it seems you didn't do background checks, if you did some background checks on me you might find you're out of your league in knowing about this band...i mean you just bullshitted...seriously And wash away the rain (rain being corruption)' are you serious? you just wrecked the poetic genius in that line how can you wash away what is water, what is meant to be cleaner than water, if he wants to wash away what you wash things with that shows how crazy this world must be to him, he truly thinks the world is in dark times but he wasn't singing about rapture you took it out of context i am sorry for going ape shit at you but really it makes no sense |
Soundgarden – Birth Ritual Lyrics | 19 years ago |
sorry mate but i am not getting much from this i think it may be a personal joke or personal phrase, i think he is talking about sex as a birth ritual and he is describing our culture in a disturbing way. i hate to say it but lines like 'you can drive my tail' and 'Euphoric rush', I'm sputtering it really suggests sex and then saying that we are just tools(Like cold machines) in reproduction when all that is going to happen to us is death 'And good strives for heart ache Marked for the death ritual, ritual, ritual" it seems purposely clear as mud i don't think it is made for an easy or linear interpretation |

the best christmas carol i have ever heard |
Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics | 19 years ago |
in that rip magazine interview he says it was about that day not necessarily about acid perhaps when he was wandering his emotions may have been magnified and he is always going on about this kind of stuff i mean i think roman candle, that is really bloody clever if you look at it from two different angles the roman candle as in, being a christian and then the roman candle firework its like where is it going to lead you religion is a dangerous thing and perhaps that could lead to the end of the world i just really think he is not a concept lyricist i don't think he would just write a song about the world blowing up it sounds like something guns n' roses would do. like 'i used to love her' is that sort of lyrics. blind dogs, hand of god, kingdom of come, jesus christ pose(i know thats not about religion but its still a catholic musing he likes doing it i swear), an unkind, applebite, heretic, if some of you don't know those songs check them out but yah there are tons more so i can be swayed to agree that it is related to acid, but the topic is not acid, i think at best it is his oppinions and emotions about the world he lives in which were brought to his attention in his state after using acid he isn't a drug user he was when he was really young so i don't think he would think it would be could too write a song about being tripped out in the superunknown era. he isn't like that, well he wasn't i don't really get him now i appreciate your oppinions though guys i commented on a white stripes song today and none of them discuss the lyrics its just bickering about popstars relationships. happy holidays |
The White Stripes – Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i really like this website because quite often you get to discuss the meanings of the song and in everyday life no-one cares they just care if it says 'baby' or if its a catchy beat. but it really bugs me that from 4 pages of commentary on this song there has been no discussion on its meaning and why would anyone say that it is stupid to even talk about it if they were in a relationship, it could be related to what the song is about so why the hell would you ignore it. this is songmeanings.net not omg.tell.us.like.how.much.u.luv.songs.net it gets really annoying and don't say well go to another site cause i want to talk about the meaning not to be an asshole i mean you can comment however you like but don't you realise the name of this website SONGMEANINGS.NET!!! |
Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
radiohead fans are much more intelligent than soundgarden fans well done |
Soundgarden – Swallow My Pride (Green River cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this is warped but i think they are comparing the american dream or america to a blow job but its just the first verse is about a girl showing the guy that america is proud of itself and then the next verse is about the warmth of a womans heart and his blood running cold and swallowing his pride its like america should get over themselves and that its like a blowjob yah anyway thats my warped 2 cents |
Soundgarden – Switch Opens Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yah its about role reversals, slaves for masters, children in roles of authority(thrones) do we need those above us the second verse shows that they have important roles and without those above us we would be in chaos like a patient without a surgeon left with your insides open it is a graphich description to emphasise the point that those above us have a purpose. i am not saying u should not aim high but don't condemn those doing their jobs which can be seen as being above us. its the way of the world. |
Soundgarden – Tears to Forget Lyrics | 19 years ago |
we are sad no matter what he is sad because he is losing someone and yet sad that he will forget all about it and he will cry no matter what even if he has no reason. "When I try to cry one These tears do forget you" he is just having a youthful whinge about life and love. |
Soundgarden – The Day I Tried to Live Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i think the general idea is apparent but whoever it was that picked up on the just like you like was a genius the song is happy he has realised we are pigs wallowing in the mud and it is fine but i'd just like to leave analysing lyrics cas i couldn't be fucked tonight, and just say my my oh my is that guitar layering at the beginning good its incredible and then that bassline its like a perfect composition so creative even the drums are brilliant and suiting and thats why audioslave suck |
Soundgarden – Tighter & Tighter Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this is very uncharacteristic of me to say this cas i am sick of all the people thinking cornell is a stoner because of the black hole sun video clip but this song to me just screams out DRUG ADDICTION. I know the chris had drug addictions when he was younger and is not proud of them and his shame is the shadow on his face as he uses drugs again, "Shadow face Blowing smoke and talking wind" plus talking wind means he is bullshitting and his words amount to bullshit when he is doing this. and yah it goes on, sweet ride is getting high sudden snake is cravings fell too far to start again means it fucked him up so much why would he want to do it anymore. there is so much stoner imagery black or burning sun he is depressed without this escapism of drugs anyway thats my interpretation |
Soundgarden – Toy Box Lyrics | 19 years ago |
of course we can all ring up chris and ask him |
Soundgarden – Toy Box Lyrics | 19 years ago |
its about ageing i think, some girl has died and has lost her innocence and someone wants to return to their childhood and resist change"please take me back to my healing home, please take me back to my toy box" toy box just symbolising childhood. but i have no clue about the girl i think it is topical lyrics that u would need to ask chris about. |
Soundgarden – Ty Cobb Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i didn't like this song when i first bought this album but it was so damn catchy and i loved the intro ben does and it just hooks me in and the little kim intrumental bit that keeps repeating, its just so good and soundgarden have always had their funny songs, big dumb sex for example oh god all their funny songs are so catchy and well written. and what a brilliant name for a song. oh and if ur interested they use a mandolin and a mandola |
Soundgarden – Ugly Truth Lyrics | 19 years ago |
great song but i don't admire the lyrics, they are similar to uncovered maybe there was an actual resentment to truth or to a secret that was let out during the louder than love period. He doesn't seem to appreciate truth at that time because honesty has made him look like a bad person "Ugly isn't what I want to be I don't mind but the truth Don't look that good on me" yah i really love the music and the way it is sung and i suppose it suits the music well but its not much to read. |
Soundgarden – Uncovered Lyrics | 19 years ago |
yah i think he was very happy with his technique of swapping words(many secrets you have, many secrets have you, etc.) and went with that but the actual content is defintiely about a secret being let out and someone doesn't care if the person who did something wrong is sorry and its really basic no hidden meaning i assume. |
Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics | 19 years ago |
all the catholicism musings is probably why these lyrics appeal so easily to fundamentalists, and they are so easily misinterpreted. but this song is MUCH more likely to be about an acid trip than about revelations. |
Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think chris is just trying to sound cool with the acid thing, he may have been inspired by that but u can see that so many of these lyrics relate to his musing of religion(jesus christ pose, black hole sun, an unkind, holy water, hand of god) so many of his songs relate to his problems with worshipping. i read that article but i think he is just making up what he said as he went along i don't think the actual lyrics are about an acid trip but perhaps the mood and title of the song relate to that experience but the lyrics have such a deep meaning about conformity and religion. |
Soundgarden – Zero Chance Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"i think i know the answer" if he thinks he knows the answer he must feel enlightened of the fact that we have zero chance of not feeling suffering. As hindus believe life is suffering. but sure maybe it is about forgetting the stereotype of family values of being happier in company Cornell was a very antisocial person and he said that wasn't a bad thing "i only really see leave the house when i am touring" so i think he is a strong believer in liking yourself because honestly you are really on your own most of the time and your are bound to die alone. i am just ranting but yah i think it has a great melody and a great title but i dislike the rhyming of lonliness and holiness it seems like it was the first thing that came to mind and just kept with it i don't think it has much meaning. |
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I guess it just means that he's sick of all the bullshit that goes on everyday and just wants it all to be swallowed up whole! Cornerstone you are also right that is really more like it. |
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Chris cornell mentions things that may relate to the bible such as 'Jesus tries to crack a smile' or 'we lack the moses to look the saints in the eyes' but often it is because we the people are at the other end of a personal joke of his and the religious people don't want to see further meanings to the lyrics for example "light a roman candle and hold it in your hand" well i wouldn't be suprised if someone out there thinks that means be faithful to the pope and your god in the times of darkness and the apocalypse but a roman candle is a fire work and really this lyric is probably more to do with his own stuggle with religion than bowing down to the almighty he is a thinker not a follower and there is nothing wrong with christianity i really think it is fine but in the duration of soundgarden i can assure u chris cornell was not in the mindset of a christian. he is intelligencia who often got angry at his country and the way in which the populace went about life if u don't want to accept this email me and i will provide u with many interviews and quotes on him which cleary show is unchristianity. |
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 19 years ago |
alaninwonderland is a genius that really represents cornells mentality much more than revelations. i used to be christian myself but as i started to challenge my religion i was reading all the soundgarden articles ever written and i found there was someone challenging their religion just like me. if u would like to see some extensive articles on soundgarden i suggest this site www.stargate.net/soundgarden/articles or join the soundgarden mailing list SOMMS, i am well studied in soundgarden i also attend a catholic school. so i find it odd that i am accused of not knowing about chris cornell or christianity. I would like to finish with a quote from Mr Cornell in an interview for the blow up the outside world single interviewer:if there was anything you would want to blow up in the outside world what would it be CC:the religious right who relate everything they can to the Bible |
U2 – Trash, Trampoline, and the Party Girl Lyrics | 20 years ago |
"I know she wants more than a party" i think this song shows that it is immature to be selfish "When I was three I thought the world revolved around me " then again this song is very ambiguos "You know what I mean " i think that may be a joke because this song does not seem to be very literal or self expanatory. i don't have much idea on what this is about |
Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 20 years ago |
i think its just a general idea of how sick the world is so the ice cream thing its jsut to add to the way they conveyed the world as sickening and disturbing. If u notice inside the clip itself there is not a whole heap of rare and disturbing images, it all happens in our homes and streets, someone combing his hair, doing push ups, melting toys, like as an assemblage it is truly disturbing but i think on its own little snippets like that every now and then don't bother us. Its effective because that clip portrays mainly the american or western lifestyle and it disturbs us. |
Soundgarden – Burden in My Hand Lyrics | 20 years ago |
i think this song is about believing a person so much that u would take abuse from them and then deny to yourself that it happens, i think the first three lines dispay the faith in this person and how shit it turns out to be, and then they decide to drink away their problems'drown in alcohol' though cornell being in such a stable relationship i doubt it is about him or even specific drinking and abuse so much, it could be about fame or someother kind of fortune which turns out to be unworthy of the effort u put in so u pretend it was. it could all be about a state of denial |
