Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics 15 years ago
This might help, quotes from Peter Gabriel regarding the part of the story in this song:

"Which in turn led up to a spiral staircase into a chamber with 32 doors, none of which would get any of them anywhere."

Peter Gabriel: "And it all led up to a spiral staircase which in turn led into a chamber with 32 doors, none of which went anywhere but back in the chamber."

The carpet crawlers are in a corridor, heading towards a spiral staircase that they think will free them, but it only leads them to the chamber of 32 doors. None of the doors lead the people to "heaven" or whatever they are looking for. The doors only lead back to seperate corridors, and so on.

One last piece of info: Rael while in the chamber, rather than trying all the doors to escape, instead decides to help a blind woman (the lilly white lilith) this desicion ineffitably leads to his escape from this "dream". Rather than trying to find his way out of the chamber like all the others, he essential gives up, and just helps someone.

These IMO are all metapohric references to a spiritual journey.

Genesis – The Carpet Crawlers Lyrics 15 years ago
taken out of context this song does seem to have sexual references, or maybe drug references, but this whole album is an ongoing story. You won't be able to grasp anything about this song without attempting to grasp the whole.

If you listen to some of Gabriel's other early Genesis lyrics, such as Supper's ready, songs from Trespass (looking for someone, stagnation) , watchers of the skies, an ongoing spiritual quest does seem to be a major topic of his writing. So I tend to agree with what fourtoes is saying.

Modest Mouse – The Stars Are Projectors Lyrics 16 years ago
I think many people misinterpret MM lyrics to be anti-religious, this doesn't seem to be the case, becuase if you study the religious systems, you'll see this concept: "where do circles begin" is for the most part at the essence of religious teachings.
For example: Taoism, the initial line in the Tao Te Ching is "the Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao". This is meant to show how reason and logic, can't explain, the tao, God, or the universe, whatever title you choose to give this myserious human situation. The point being that reason and logic fail to explain life and the existence of the universe.

This is also evident in Hindu thought, as Brahman, is neti neti (not this not that) the idea is the same, you can't grasp brahman with words language, science whatever. Hence meditation, stilling the mind, breaking dependence on reason.

This also applies to the God centered religions of the west. For example: Islam. One of the fundamental principles of Islam is God's unknowability.

Whats the difference if one person says the universe can't be explained, and another says God can't be explained?

One could say that a common ground for religions is actual this principle, that reason doesn't explain the mystery of our existence, call it "the universe" the "Tao" "God" whatever, all of these are words for the same thing which we can't explain.

Kansas – Carry on Wayward Son Lyrics 16 years ago
My interpretation of this song is based on personal experience. It is about the way a person feels after having a deeply spiritual experience, most likely on a hallucinogen, as in my own case.

"Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion
I was soaring ever higher
But I flew too high"

Once he had a transcendent experience, an enlightening, out of body experience, one that he was not prepared for that afterwards sent him into a state of dilusion.

"Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man
Though my mind could think I still was a mad man"
"Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don't know"

He thought he was enlightened, thay he knew the truth and that he had to spread his wisdom to others. But he didn't yet realize that he was not truly enlightened. (He thought he could see but was still a blind man) Claiming to be a wise man when he was just a person who had a spiritual experience on a drug. Later he would realize that he was not an enlightened sage, and his actions during this time period would only prove this to him in time.

The chorus:
His heart kept telling him to forge on during this confusing and eye opening period of his life and that in the end he would find peace of mind.

The most essential verse:
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
Now your life's no longer empty
Surely heaven waits for you

This verse means a lot, it is saying carry on, you will always remember that experience you had, nothing in life will take that from you and how real it was, and nothing in this life will equal the splendor of that experience.
Now that he's had this experience his life has gained meaning that it never had before, and if he continues to work hard and carry on, he may one day reach heaven again, and actually be that enlightened being that he thought he was in the weeks or months that followed his spiritual experience.

So thats my interpretation which is solely based on personal experience, check out the book BE HERE NOW in expounds upon the connection between LSD ad other hallucinogens with spiritual experiences.

I've listened to a lot of the 70's prog and I think that the Flower Kings are much more than just an ant in comparison to the bands listed above. They have got just as much quality music if not more than most of the bands listed above, 8 studio albums, four of which are double albums. So give them a solid listen it is definitely worth it, they may not reign supreme but they are in the same league with the bands listed above.

Yes – And You And I Lyrics 17 years ago
My interpretation goes along with some of your's but differs essentially. This isn't a love song, the you in this song is you.
This song is about findiing peace within yourself and how the world could be if we could all find peace.
I think the chorus is talking about reaching truth:

Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid,
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid,

All complete in the side of seeds of life with you.
This line he is just saying that truth, peace and love are all already within yourself, you just have to reach deep within yourself and all is complete in the side of seeds of life with you.

And then this is my favorite part, he begins to talk about how it can be, and may be one day. The preacher and the teacher are guides that we are told will lead towards truth but inevitably will fail.

Sad preacher nailed upon the coloured door of time;
Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme.
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify;
Political ends, as sad remains, will die.
Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you.

1) The next line he's talking about how he searched for truth in places like religion and science and found nothing. 2) Once the truth was reached he realized that he never needed science or religion, the answer was always inside himself.

1) I listened hard but could not see
Life tempo change out and inside me.
The preacher trained in all to lose his name;
The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same.
2) In the end, we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalize
That the truth of the man maturing in his eyes,
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you.

The end, apocalypse is what you and I, and Jon will be doing when it's all said and done if you follow your heart to truth, peace and love.

This song is a joke and it mocks all of the people who think that everyone who does drugs, does them simply because there bored or because of peer pressure. It also mocks the rediculous false image that the government and the media give to drugs to scrare people away.

The end part is saying that if you choose to, you can get a lot more out of hallucinogens then just these stupid funny experiences listed in the lyrics. There is more to hallucinogens then perceivable before ever trying them.

The Beatles – Tomorrow Never Knows Lyrics 17 years ago
The first beatles song about reaching enlightenment through meditation/acid. He's literally telling you how. It's easier to look at it this way:

First this:
Turn off your mind relax and float down-stream,
Lay down all thought surrender to the void,

Result this:
That you may see the meaning of within,
That love is all and love is ev’ryone,

Or:
When ignorance and haste may mourn the dead
-Which is now.
-Check out how eastern philosophies feel about ignorance and this will make sense. (Taoism, Buddhism, John was a big fan of Maharashi and the Tibetan book of the dead as we all know).

But listen to the color of your dreams,
Or play the game existence to the end.
He's just reiterating what he said above.

It is not dying
It is shining
It is speaking
It is knowing
It is believing
It is not living...

Tool – Jambi Lyrics 18 years ago
To get back to the meaning of this song, I completely disagree with DISGUSTIPATED's analysis. However, I can see how a believer in Christianity can view these SOME of these lyrics as being pro-Jesus Christ.

Like most Tool songs, I see multiple things going on in this song. The beginning of this song is interesting though. Let's use logic to help us.

"So if I could I'd wish it all away
If I thought tomorrow, They'd take you away"

Despite his use of the word if in this song, I believe his reasoning follows this: If by wishing it all away, the result would be i'd lose you, then I would wish it all away.

He continues to keep solidifying the fact that he would wish it all away, so what does this mean? Well logically what would follow is that the person/thing/organization spoke of in the beginning of this song, Maynard want's it the fuck out.

Based on this, It leads me to conclude that this song is anything but religious. The thing he "wishes away in many past songs, ( schism, the grudge, opiate, ) is organized religion.

But don't get me wrong theres much more to this song. He flips the script all together right here:

"You're my peace of mind, my home
I said I'm just trying to hold on
One more day"

Also right where he says this:
But you changed that all for me
Lifted me up, turned me round

He's giving us a hint about where this song is going to end up.

He changes the subject matter to his son, or possibly his mother in these 2 small section, but uses similar language to confuse us all. Whether it be his mother or son, I believe he's just saying that they are in inspiration to him.

Now the ending, the shine on part: You've got to conclude that this part is a message of hope to his son, where he brings in another reoccuring theme in tool's lyrics, the 2 becoming one, the ego, and the self. A lot like some of the lyrics in Right in Two, and Reflection, i believe he is simply saying to his son that he must be the best person he can be, he must strive to exist as one, he must crucify the ego.

Divided, he will just fall into the masses and wither away, but as one, you can be a great person and spread the word to others:

"Shine on upon the many, light our way
Benevolent sun"

Tool – 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) Lyrics 18 years ago
This got erased so I'm reposting it

I believe theres a lot more to this song then just a tribute to his mother. I see this song having a few things goin on all at once. First: He's saying to the believers of christianity, what are you gonna do when the world around you is collapsing, and theres no savior to guide you? example:

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun
How we rised to the height of our halo
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior (We all expect Jesus/god to save us when it's all coming to an end, but in face they won't be there)

I also see Maynard comparing the hardships that his mother had to experience to the life of Jesus, and placing his mother in a higher light. example:

Fading all the trials and the tribulations (of Jesus)
None of us have actually been there
Not like you (his mother has been through the trials and tribulations)

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy
Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choices hypocrites won't seek

This little light of mine
The gift you passed onto me
I'll let it shine
To guide you safely on your way
Your way home (thanking his mother for unconditionally loving him, and allowing him to become the great person he is now)

What are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you guide them home to zion
What are they going to do when the river is overrun
Other than tremble incessantly

High as a wave but i'll rise on up on the ground
(Again, what are all you believers gonna do when the shit hits the fan, I (maynard) will be the only one in comfort)

You are a light, and a wave, that they will only read about
I only pray, heaven knows when to lift you out
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
You're going home (speaking of both his mother and Jesus, the 10,000 days can also be speaking of how long Jesus lived for. Comparing them both, but again I feel maynard is still holding his mother in a higher light then Jesus)

The next part is tough
You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying:

I have come home now
Fetch me the spirit
The son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my, wings
(I think this part can be interpretted many ways, but what I get is that he's telling his mother to confront her maker (if it exists) and tell them their reign of faith has reached its height, now it is Maynards (or humanities) time to shine.

The final paragraph i feel is Maynard saying to his mother that if there is a god, tell him that my intentions were good, though i failed to believe, and ask him to forgive me.

I feel like the death of him mother, and her apparent strong faith in God has caused Maynard to question the things he may have dismissed in the past.
Thats my interpretation of this song.

What is ironic is that this website is a great example of what this song is talking about. Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 18 years ago
Like most Tool songs, i think theres a deeper meaning to this song then what most people are seeing. This song is very-anti religion, much like many tool songs, but particullarly the grudge and schism. The overall message in all the songs being we need to throw aside all of our previously established beliefs about religion, among other things. He's not talking about dividing anything when he says cut it all right in two. He's talking about the tug of war battle that's been going on since the start of civilization between humans. The tug of war battle relates to the "schism", and the "grudge" in that we have this grudge (our religious beliefs), which seperates us, causes tension, a schism, if you will, and the result is this ongoing tug of war battle.

So until we choose to let this grudge go, (accept that we are all humans, and none of us can explain why we're here or how the universe came into existence with certainty) the tug of war battle will continue to rage on.
"The light that fueled the fire then, has burned a hole between us so, we can not seem to reach an end, cripling our communication." - Schism

Our differences in beliefs (that were designed to guide us into peace and harmony) has created a huge burden, the tug of war match, the schism, that will continue to plague our species until we individually make the chose to let go of the grudge, Accept the truths about the reality of religion.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Suffer Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is song is about discovering your own identity in a society that can consume you and control your actions. Its directed as a message toward everyone, not just written about himself. I dont think this song is about addiction though.

All that you suffer is all that you are
All that you smother is all that you are
And you're saying you're seeing, you're saying who you are
(Everything that makes up your identity growing up is not neccesarily the true you, the people around you, actions in the past, society all work together to create a fake identity for yourself.)

What takes meaning is cleaning the meaning of who you are (Try and search for the real you)

All of your struggles beneath your disguise
Drink from the reasons that hold you alive
'Til we're safe from the wounds of desire and pain
You must rise from the mounds of desire and change
(You must rise above all of the influences and be true to yourself)

Too late to discover peace of mind
Too late to recover me (This reffers to his doubt that it may be too late for both society, and himself)

The rest of the song just reinterates these concepts. Personal identity is a long hard process, and im goin to bed cus its 5 am.

Tool – Intension Lyrics 18 years ago
Soaked in Mercury i whole heartedly agree with you on this interpretation. I particularly like this part:

Spark becomes a flame.
Flame becomes a fire.
Light the way or warm this.
Home we occupy.

Spark becomes a flame.
Flame becomes a fire.
Forge a blade to slay the stranger.
Take whatever we desire.

I believe the spark is human greed/selfishness, the desire to out do our fellow men. It starts off small, but as civilization increased, the spark turned into a flame, flame to fire, thus consuming our whole human race. What's the result of this consumption?
The result is what we have now, a society that continues to:
"Forge a blade to slay the stranger, take what we desire"

Tool – Forty Six & 2 Lyrics 18 years ago
HERE IS THE ACTUAL MEANING OF THIS SONG, BASICALLY EVERYONE IS OFF, SO FORGET EVERY POST BEFORE THIS ONE, 100% GARUNTEED RIGHT!!
-sorry to be harsh but everyone is completely wrong with the Jungian stuff.

Maynard is combining a few philosophical and psychological concepts into his own message. This song is very similar to Reflection.

As a few people have said eariler, the shadow is an archetype of Jung, archetypes are basically what Jung calls instincts in his theory. The Shadow archetype represents the our animal instincts. Every usage of the shadow (stepping through, shedding of it, etc.) is meant as symbolism, he is saying that he, unlike most other people, is ready to evolve. Maynard believes in "crucifying the ego", as noted in Reflection.
Ego= Jung's concept of the conscious mind. What i feel Maynard means by crucify the ego is break free from the chains that hold you down with in your own mind. Learn from experience, expand your mind, actualize the unlimited potential that your human mind has to offer you. Crucifying the ego involves many aspects that i will go into depth in "reflection".

So you see, Maynard is saying that he has come dangerously close to fully reaching the potential of his mind, and now he feels the change of human evolution is approaching, and he is welcoming it.

That is the message of forty six and 2. Many of Tools songs relate in their messages.

What refutes the previous arguments about Jung's theory is that their information was simply false. Jung believed that there were three levels of the personality NOT consciousness. the first being the ego, the conscious mind. The second being the personal unconscious, this was our dreams. Thirdly was our Collective unconscious, which was an acumulation of our instinctual needs, rooted in sentiment. So you see these concepts had were designed to explain the personality. Jung at no point mentioned anything about Human beings transcending from one level to another. If you want proof check out this website. http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/jung.html

sorry if i offended anyone, I am simply here to spread the truth.

To me the everlasting gaze is mainly dealing with the concept of billy saying, "we're still here and we can still play hard" I dont think its really a message to god, considering Billy is an atheist. He's established that in the song zero. I think the references to God are more just backing the what he said in zero. but overall it's about his disapproval of the record company and letting fans know that they're still around. Unbelievable band, but sadly this is by far there worst album.

Being a big marijauna smoker for a long time and also a huge fan of the smashing pumpkins i would have to say that this song is about the wonders of smoking marijuana at a young age. Basically every lyric is clearly about marijuana. I dont see how people say these lyrics are vague or anything, it is very clear to me. All of the references to 'she' are not about a girl, but about the piece, named porcelina. I believe that the story is made up, obviously and that the entire album, everything about it is just meant to get you thinking about what it's actually about. Everything about the album, the music, the lyrics, the art work inside and out, none of it means anything. The lyrics are to eccentric to be able to know what hes actually trying to say, the music, how it loops, it's just meant to make u think. And they did a good job of it.

AFI – This Time Imperfect Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok it starts at 1. This time imperfect which starts with the poem, which im my oppinion clearly reflects birth to death, a prelude to the album. It follows the story of a life and death of a very emotionally drained heart broken man starting here:

Song 1- This time imperfect - The Main Character in the story is discontent with life, and willing to give it all up. He attempts suicide, because he loses the girl he loves, but is unsuccessful. The chorus of this song suggests an attempt at death, but failure- "There are no flowers, no not this time, there'll be no angels gracing these lines, just these stark words I find, ( possibly his suicide note)", also just the name of the song, " This time imperfect" reflects his failure this time, in killing himself. we move on to part 2.

Song 2 - But Home is nowhere -
The Main character has reached complete rock bottom. He feels he will never find love and is hurt from the failure in the past. "26 years and, Ive just begun to realize, my intimate is no one". He questions how he got to such a low point, and feels as if home is nowhere. He feels as if he cant do anything correct, not even end his life as in the last song.

Song 3 - The leaving song part 1 -
The two leaving songs are about him not seeing the light left in his life. (possibly a female friend offering comfort, he doesnt notice it, becus he is only focused on the negative. "Hard to notice, gleaming from the sky, when your staring at the cracks"

Song 4 - The Leaving Song part 2 - This is just a continuation of the leaving song part 1. Same theme "Dont waste your touch, you wont feel anything, or were you sent to save me" He still is pushing aside the last bit of hope in his life, but now is questioning if it may save him.

Song 5 - This Celluloid dream -
Our character is now looking back on his past, when he was a musician and a performer. It saddens him more to realize that it is all gone.

Song 6 - Paper Airplanes -
This is the point where our character begins to lose faith in god. "Raise high monolithic, statues so fragile. As they fall" "From below, in my seclusion, look up to see the sky to see paper wings, and watch them burn" metaphors for his loss of faith.

Song 7- The Great Dissapointment -
The Great Disappointment in his life is how he entrusted so much faith in god only to find he'd be betrayed in the end. The beginning of this song he is talking about going into a church type place. How he'd wait to graced by angels and god spiritually eventually, but it never came. "While I waited, I was wasting away" while he waited for god to safe him, he was wasting away. Second verse is when he realizes that only in his dreams may god exist. In the end he is saying how he didnt want it to come to this, but it eventually was inevitable.

Song 8 - Death of seasons -
This is the part where our character is starting to really lose it. He has lost all faith in everything, and feels as if he will only be betrayed. The fallen stars ( possibly friends) are few in numbers, but trying to still save him, but it is to late.

Song 9 - Girls not grey -
The characters suicide. He finally gives up on life, and kills him self, possibly with a morpheine overdose explained later.

Song 10 - Dancing through sunday -

He mentions his suicide " As morpheine tears through deadened veins".

Song 13 - Miseria Cantare -
And it all comes together at the end, as he is obviously in hell. The Song of the sorrow is the chant that he sings as he is burning in hell. ( The lyrics of the song) and the last few lines are the rest of the people in hell chanting to him you have no where to turn to now, you are one of us. "Love, your hate, your faith lost, you are now, one, one of us!"
