Elliott Smith – Rose Parade Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, I'm not sure whether he hated himself or not. People draw that conclusion too quickly and believe they can psychoanalyze another through poetry. Read some Kierkegaard, and you will understand.

Bright Eyes – No Lies, Just Love Lyrics 19 years ago
Well as to question his sexuality if that holds any importance haha I actually think he is a more-straight-bi. I live in Omaha, there's been some questioning instances of his sexuality at times with stories I've heard, but, Conor used to live in the same house as my sister, he told her some pretty romantic things once, so.. the gay thing is out.

Odd experience I've had with Conor. I was at a show the other night and nodded to him 'hello' as he stopped in front of my sister and I. He gave a little giggle, and walked off toward the bar. I found it interesting. Before I always found Conor as a overly-depressive guy who wrote to quell his pain. But I guess after little instances that should barely mean anything like that, you can see subliminally into it, that I totally understand and notice the things that I've felt before in his poetry. More or less, I either see existentialism in his lyrics, or I see happiness and the beauty he's trying to get out to the people who misunderstand him.

People give him a bad rep for 'being so sad,' and some people glorify him and eventually end up trying to be who they think he is. To my sister he is an average guy, with an average life (recently gone frivolous what with Winona and all). From one poet to another, just another person is all we ever could be, maybe that is why we write. From my experience and thought, I merely advise to any 'hardcore Conor obsessors' or as highschool kids want to say... 'emo' Just try to remember that it's not like that, I don't think it would make him feel any more important than he does as a poet. Poetry is not about relating, it's about understanding. I think maybe he wants to teach you all.

Love.

Elliott Smith – Oh Well, Okay Lyrics 19 years ago
You could almost say maybe he's talking to/about himself until "if you get a feeling next time you see me." like a monologue. Just a thought.

This reminds me of a past relationship I had with somebody, a melancholy person who never knew, through all my psychoanalysis and therapy with them, why things were the way they made them. It's been quite awhile now, but you don't usually forget things like that with people who seemed important to you at one time.

Sometimes, after all the shock, you just have these pictures that are fading slowly over the trust you figured was there. It used to be suffocating, but it's a passing face, and you just shrug it off.. "oh well, okay." Even though sometimes you're unsure if it was all just sympathy or if it meant something. If you cared about them, why would you want to just shrug it off like they'd want you to?

I guess one could dedicate this song to a brick wall.

Elliott Smith – I Didn't Understand Lyrics 19 years ago
I once read most of Either/Or by Søren Kierkegaard. The first chapter, before the Diapsalmata, there is a quote originally in french I've done my best to translate here:
"Granduer, knowledge, fame,
Friendship, pleasure and wellness,
All is only wind, that smokes:
For better saying, all is nothing."

This seems appropriate here, Smith seeming to be a Kierkegaard fan in his lyrics.
"i can guarantee you this is a cloud of smoke
trying to occupy space
what a fucking joke"
Would be to say metaphorically, smoke rises to slowly disappear in the air, what he must have shared with this person (maybe himself) he realizes it's just another useless mask. The things that seem like they matter at the time are just smoke, all is only wind that smokes. And in the end, realizing this would make one feel like nothing. Almost trying to convince (in despair?) that it was all a joke in the first place.

"...and so you'd soon be leaving me alone, like I'm supposed to be tonight, tomorrow, and every-day."
Once again, mentioning that he is nothing anyway. And since he's nothing he'd rather they go. Like he knew from the beginning he knew it was all going to happen, but he didn't want to believe that love was just a painting and a fairy-tale.

Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics 19 years ago
I hardly think the song has any direct connections to medical differences. I'm thinking "it's a chemical embrace that kicks you in the head
to a pure synthetic sympathy that infuriates you totally" means exactly what HoldMyBones said, it's a more poetic statement than it is direct and straight. Also, support for that would be the third line: "whether or not you want them to."

The way I took "you got a pretty vision in your head, a pencil full of poison lead, and a sickened smile illegal in every town." was that maybe he means: in this place, his visions of happiness are killing him because he has longed for it when nobody will let him be happy. So there he is daydreaming.

Beck – Lonesome Tears Lyrics 20 years ago
Well I look at it like, he realizes that his tears aren't doing anything for him so he's going to try to get over it. Being through this sort of thing, the chorus to me means that the one-sided love he's keeping himself in isn't doing him any good without knowing just why he hasn't done anything about it. The second verse; the sun has always symbolized positive feelings, being lazy it hasn't had much of them to shine on him, and when they do he knows that nothing gold can stay. But he'll anything to find happiness far away from where he's at emotionally.
