Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song, though I think a lot of people (or else I myself) are missing the meaning entirely.

To me, it has to due with the courage and faith involved in being an Atheist. The object of the song is such a person, and the narrator isn't entirely sure if he is or not, but he has the faith to trust her...there in lies the irony: Faith, but not in God.

"If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied...illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs...I will follow you into the dark"

The dark...the void...emptiness and nothingness. It is a very, very scary concept for most people. I think that's why Islamic/Judeo/Christian theology (and yes, they're all about 95% the same when you get down to it) is so popular. Most people simply do not have the courage to live their lives to the fullest.

If you absolutely knew for certain that there is no afterlife, no reincarnation, no ultimate pool of interconnected spirituality, what's the first thing you'd do when you awoke tomorrow morning?

Would you go to work? To school? Kill a few hours surf the web?

No, I didn't think so.

Barenaked Ladies – When I Fall Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the song also has as much to do with immortality as it does suicide. I think the window washer is lamenting that he will leave no legacy. Even a crappy painter will most likely have SOMEONE save one of his or her paintings. The window washer feels he will leave nothing. A hundred years from now no one will know he even existed. But the Painter lives on...if not on some gallery wall for the masses to worship, at least in the closet of some old lady's house or in a thrift store with a $2.00 tag on it. Further on...some other person might buy it just for the frame...take it home and fall in love with it.

On a more dorky note, I love the 9.8 straight down. I wonder how few people actually get that. 9.8 meters per second2 is the acceleration of a falling body due to gravity. Gotta love BNL for remembering that tidbit from high school physics.

Barenaked Ladies – Baby Seat Lyrics 19 years ago
The bridge is by far the coolest part of this song. "40 days at sea" refers to a Israelite style wandering about, further evidenced by the Jack Kerouac reference (read On the Road). It's sarcastic, not literal.

The entire song is saying don't give up your youthful idealism. It's trying to create nostalgia for another time (see also Old Apartment) and counterpointing complacency for our Fight-Clubesque lot in life (see also Never Do Anything).

BNL is at their best when they're at their most introspective. I love Pinch Me and 1-Week types of songs, but the deeper stuff is truly great.

U2 – Hawkmoon 269 Lyrics 22 years ago
Sorry, I don't think that's the case. Hawkmoon 269 is supposedly a roadsign their tourbus passed at one point...as in the town of Hawkmoon is 269 miles away. Why they chose to name the song that, I have no idea.

Rob Zombie – Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy) Lyrics 22 years ago
To pimpmachismo, et al: If you read the book, make sure you get the Brittish version. The original Brittish version is composed of 21 chapters representing the 21 years it takes for a male to become an adult. Stanley Kubrick based the movie off of the American version of the book which is missing the last chapter and hence totals only 20. The last chapter completely changes the meaning of the book.
