This is the focal metaphor in this poem/song.

@[Joeliefisho92:22581] Also, I think the "Whoring Angel rising" is referring to the drug itself since it used to mask the back pain and let him continue being superman on stage for a time. But the drug doesn't discriminate and puts out for anyone who asks, which is why its a whoring angel. After a while, this stops working as well as it did initially and turns into a crutch, from an angel into burning prayers. |

@[Joeliefisho92:22580] I think the line "Transfusion with somebody morose and old" is referring to how when he wakes up with his bones cold and achy until he gets his first fix of the day, that its changing him into an old man temporarily; since the old person arthritis type symptoms share major similarities. |

@[live101587:22577] The song is about Heroin, which comes through right on the opening line "My skin is cold, transfusion with somebody morose and old". If you listen to his speech at Layola college, he describes when he wakes up and his bones are freezing until he has his first fix of the day.

Everyone seems to be looking for a concrete example of what this song means. First of all, you have to understand poetry. Bowie was a born poet. The lyrics of this song evoke a dark side. It is about a group, monks or cultists, that are actually canibalistic serial killers. It is about an urban legend. The first verse describes how they blended into society. it's actually, "The world was asleep to our latent lust." and "Sighing, we swirled through the streets like the crest of the sun."
The first chorus is the stalking of the victim and the "rush" of getting away with the crime.
The second verse is a descrption of another cult member, perhaps the leader, obviously taking drugs to enhance the experience: "Dust would flow through our veins..." He even says "It was stalking time for the moonboys."
In the next chourus the lines is actually, "With our backs down the arch." (Lying in wait." "And the Devil may be here, but we can't sing about that." (To avoid giving themselves away." They were so worked up the public, not knowing the truth, thinks they are just faking, like any number of cults.
The next verse is about hiding the evidence, plain and simple. Come on! "Where we flayed our mark!" ??? Oh, and it's "the mind warp pavillion." The final statement and chant is a promise that they will do it again...
I've seen him do this live, and from the onstage antics, I'm telling you, it's not about his brother, or anything else so innoculous... |

I love this song. To me, it's about how people sometimes are too frightened to be sincere about who they are and what they're feeling. And because of this fear, we equivocate and mislead people deliberately and tell complete lies. All because it's easier to not take risks, to not chance getting hurt. |

To be completely honest, this song freaks me out. It's not like most of Dave's other songs. You can tell by just listening to it that it's so full of anger. I like the lyrics, and I understand what he's referring to... people being hypocrites and all the hate that's present in our society... But... It definitely isn't the most uplifting song in the world. Still good, though. |

This is one of my favorite DMB songs. To me, it's about when dreams die in the whole growing up process. Hearts being broken, Ideals being crushed, etc. And when these dreams die, it's so easy to feel lost in the world and just wish that you could go back to the days of "sitting under the dreaming tree". |
