There are a few lines in this song which make me think it's about marital abuse, mainly because it reminds me a lot of a song by Boysetsfire called White Wedding Dress.
"And the scars he will leave
And the pain he inflicts..."
These lines definity suggest a dominant male, it could either be a husband or father or someone else, who is being aggressive and/or violent.
"It's our plan, strike a match
And lets burn down this place..."
It's here where the comparisons to White Wedding Dress grow, the abused victum decides to take the ultimate action and attempt to kill their abuser by burning them alive.
"The way you bend before the break and
The way my throat would feel..."
These lines from the chorus suggest that the abuser will all of a sudden turn aggressive with little warning and that they often resort to strangling the abused.
Thats what i think anyway.
Even though this song does seem to owe a lot to White Wedding Dress it's still an amazing song, Matt addresses the issue from more of a personal viewpoint than Nathan, Boysetsfire vocalist, who in running with his bands own agenda takes up a more political stand, trying to raise awareness on the issue so authoritys can take more action against abusive husbands. I have wonder why it was only used as a b-side and not put onto Hours, still it was released for us all to hear so there's no point in bitching about it. |

The chorus is abviously about JS and Marks dad, apparently he sent JS an e-mail just saying how proud he was of both his sons regardless of what they have done and achieved. the line where he sings "He said he carries us both deep within his heart." sound as if he's talking directly to Mark [his brother and bass player]. Also he nearly died that year possibly form a heart condidtion and still loves both his sons. |

this is such a brilliant song that really sets a different feel to an amazing album. it's sorta this album version of left hand charity and it's awesome! as far as i can see it's a tribute to brocks home state of Alaska, more importantly his family especially his parents, his father is a fisherman, and also his friends. possibly it shows that he feels homesick and that being on tour or living in oregon he doesn't feel at home and yearns to return to his great state. |

the band were meant to have had 5 members when thney started out, but the bassist was killed in a car crash and the second guitarist left soon after, possibley the verse "I drive by your scenery...
All the while I died that night...

is refering to the deceased bassist, the scenery could be the gravestone, and perhaps brock[the singer] was in the car and surived, but wishes that it had been him that died if his friend had lived, and the last line is asking for forgiveness, closure, to let his soul rest.

the whole british music scene is sad, earthtone9, Pitchshifter, and to some extent vacant stare, all split up, they were all tipped for the top but they just couldn't compeat with funking yanks, with all their homies and bitches and "bling bling" it's a pile of corprate wank.
