Then next verses refer to how this belief is actually like a psychic virus that slowly destroys you, that this messiah born is a parasitic cancer. 'shine on me, this little light on me." This is the illusion the messiah casts, the mesmerizing rainbow projected into the mind. But then, "Feed it". It is a parasite, the rainbow is a lie, it demands and takes something from you. "Watch the dying day waltz." Everyone has put their faith in this lie, slowly destroying their community, integrity, they follow the savior, now all that's left to do is watch them die. I actually feel some "after too many drugs" vibes from the music and lyrics. It feels like a metaphor, "living with the high command" (which is said at the end of the song), rolling with all these powerful people, being at their party in a way, being part of their destruction and command and their whole trip in general, so lost in it you don't know what you're actually doing, its like getting so fucked up night after night that you don't know what you're doing, and then you "come down" and you see the destruction after it's done, and that you fucked yourself over in the process. The 'High Command' (which could be a pun) offers a power trip in their presence, but really they're just murderous psychopaths and their power trip was an illusion that got you high. Does that make sense to anyone else? |

I think you're taking the drug thing too literally rather than figuratively, lam8. I also get the impression that you've probably never done a dissociative hallucinogen (which are *not* narcotics. narcotics refer to opioid-related drugs, as far as I'm informed) which would explain your eagerness to isolate the concept of "drug-induced thought" from anything else the artist chooses to explore, as if there's a separation. There's not one. Drug-induced thought is still thought. Drug-induced experience is still experience. Drug-inspired art is still art. Dissociative makes perfect sense as an adjective describing ISWYD in both music and lyrics (El-P has the tendency to synergize their effect in both). The album as a whole is an artifact of the disembodying consequences of a Metropolis lifestyle on the eve of self-promised destruction. It's Thanatotic - meaning the polarity from Erotic. If Eros is the spontaneous will to live, grow, make love, be curious, play, then Thanatos is the spontaneous will to stop existing, to self-destruct, to cancel out everything, to die. Where do you think ISWYD falls on that scale? El-P's trying to capture the human emotions that are swarming rootlessly around a nature-less metropolis: exhaust fumes, poisoned food, asbestos, urban heat, scavenger vermin, sewer water, densely compartmentalized dwellings, etc. and all the broken lives that this environment spawns. Paranoia, death wishes, isolation/alienation, panic, addiction, boredom, dread, etc. that subject matter is definitely some disembodying thanatos to me! and dissociative hallucinogens have been considered the Thanatos hallucinogens (PCP, Ketamine, DXM...). El-P doesn't need to be talking about being on any of these particular substances to evoke their atmospheres. The atmosphere here is universal and "dissociative" is a very appropriate way to relate it! |

| Forgive me if this has been posted already, as I haven't been able to read all the interpretations. To me this song is the narrative of Lateralus' encounter/confrontation with the nature of his/her parasitism, which is a nature in all humans. In the process of transcedence, which I believe Lateralus tells the story of, there is a point in which the parasitic and symbiotic (i.e. enlightened) aspects of the self struggle with one another. In this struggle, or "dividing", it moves to the point where the parasitic feels almost separate from the self completely; it feels as if it is an external object, like a tick or a leech. However, fighting tends not to be helpful in this process, as the only way out is through, and the best you can do is let your astral deer tick suck you dry until you can find a way in which you don't need it anymore. | |

I heard A Turner talk about in an interview around ISIS' Panopticon era of how during the black plague, rulers would actually wish for the plague to come to the village because it was an easy way of controlling people and keeping them inside of their houses. I believe that's what they're referencing, even if it's in metaphor. The magistrates sort of represents authority in general to me, and the fact that they in particular are dreaming it, they want to create as much fear as possible so that they can have more and more power. The "drool slipping from grinning mouths", to me, puts an image in my head a sick pleasure these rulers get in controlling people. The fact the "plague is forced on us all" sort of says the fear in general is the true ruler, that fear has it's way on us every day. "Is it there? Are they there?" reinforces the original uncertainty of if your being watched, but I also think it asks the question of if the plague really exists. If there really is something to be afraid of and if the rulers truly have their hand on us. The fact that it is a question fuels uncertainty in general. The uncertainty is the greatest fear. Not knowing whether or not the plague is out there controls us more than knowing what we're afraid of (because once we know what it is, it is less frightening to us) I love the line "whispers of truth burn through" and this is a reoccuring theme to me in a lot of ISIS. Oceanic had that enlightenment through suicide element, and I think that enlightenment is mentioned here as well. That no matter how much you control us, the truth can still be accessed within us if we wish to access it. That's what I gain from it. |

Of course, every Neurosis album is fairly conceptual and Times of Grace is one I've yet to entirely decipher. yet I see the "great mind" and the collective conciousness of humanity, and that times are are about to get brutal and violent and rationality isn't going to save you ("honor and wisdom will cower"). The river's flow is quite that sort of temporal pattern, the flow of life if you will. Our shell is hollow because we're powerless to betray the great mind, we're part of a system so therefore we're not grand individual egos we made ourselves out to be, therefore since we're unable to dam or diverge the flow, all we can do is follow it. | |

I believe almost every Neurosis song has to do with specific aspects of transcendence and the struggles that come with it. The narrator seems to be talking to another half of himself, like an older way of thinking. Like a piece of the personality left then came back and doesn't fit with the rest of the self anymore. The final verse is that piece of the self telling rest of himself to go to the same place it went and it can integrate the new way of thinking. I don't know, that's just the I think about it. I don't know, the whole Sun that Never Sets album feels like one of those mushroom trips that completely changes your way of thinking. Is it Scott or Steve singing this song? I'm pretty sure it's Scott, but you can never be too sure, they sound so much alike. |

There's a couple of references that make me wonder... Haile Sallase was a big leader in the Rastafari religion, and was even considered as a prophet by some. He spread Rastafari and I think he was the leader of a country in Africa, I can't fully remember. Midget Man provoking violence, for some reason, reminds me of Napoleon or Hitler. Though I definitely think there's an overall air of LSD in this song. It even sounds like LSD. But I think there's a possibility that there's more to the song than just that. But yes, this song is excellent and one of my favorites. Also, I've tripped pretty hard, but I've never had a hallucinatory midget fight me. |

I'm probably totally wrong, but I feel like this song is how we elect morons for politicians. It really reminds me of Dubya (although I know this song was written beforehand), but it could mean any politician or person with public authority. The Gods tormenting him with with slabs of rain feels like a reference to Greek tragedy, whose heros were tormented by the gods because a fatal flaw (hubris). He's Junior because he's an heir. He eats more cheese because he is greedy and self-indulgent, than time allowed because he goes over budget, yet still we put him in the limelight and stand him up proud. Verbal lashing him with spice is his political campaigns that make him look clever. He speaks the truth and tells no lies is obviously a sarcastic remark about our trust in him. He's been masturbating since the Fourth of July, because he uses American pride as a tool for people's trust but then uses it to indulge himself. Of course, the truth comes out and the man feels he is now tormented by the gods. I'm not sure yet why he doesn't like faxes and phones, that's the only line that doesn't fit for me. But conclusively this guy is an arrogant moron who was a stupid even as a kid (he used to spin his little sister in the washing machine). |

I'm sure what it's about, but I think it's of a "normal" relationship between a husband and wife, like the kind that isn't anything special but still lasts until death. God this is an excellent song. I'm not sure but I personally believe the two times the verse "Oh God, here's that question now, the one that makes me go insane / I'd gladly tear my heart out if you never, never, never, never change" they mean opposite of each other. The first time around of course the question is whether or not he wants to marry her, and as long as she stays the same way she is he'll commit his life to her. But so much happens musically between the two points that it's spoken so it could very well be the second time it is said, the man has already married the girl and they've been together for awhile. This time around I think the question is the woman asking, "Are you happy?" or "do you still love me" or something, and "tearing his heart out" is negative this time around. He'd gladly rip away his flesh if this girl stays the same way she is, because by this time he's gotten sick of her. Well, it's an Oingo Boingo song, which of course means it's not happy. ;) |

The verse, "although Holy Wood was sad they'd remember this as Valentine's day" This could mean two things, at the time, those who followed Christ grieved about his death but still saw his death as a gift and a blessing, to be reflected much later by religion who both put his death on the guilt of people while still celebrating it. Manson tunes are always filled with very direct self-contradictions. The second thing it could mean is the commercialization of Christ's martyrdom. Valentine's Day is widely known as a "commercial holiday", and this flows with the rest of the album making references to "crucifiction sales" and whatnot. |

From my interpretation, the view of the song is from a guy who has always been considered different and crazy by the abusive Christian environment he grew up in, until he finally snaps. Since Christians believe we are all God's designed children, they tend to find it hard to accept that there are people different from them. So they make a very clear line between what is normal and what is wrong, Television and media only further this generalization, and the Christian Nation make make sure to take of the "insane". So after our character's mind wanders and he becomes crazy, he sings against this judgmental and generalizing environment, stating the hypocrisy of maybe the reason he's gone crazy is because "the alcoholic bastard(his father)" mentally abused him when he preached against everything in the world. |

I have two ideas forthis very strange song: 1. Skinny growing thin is not having very many riches, and not looking to be rich. He never looks at the lights(the lime light) yet still sold a lot of things. Skinny also selling very odd things to odd people to sell it to. In this way, this could be the Residents defense to not selling out yet still selling things and how that makes sense 2. This one is the exact opposite than the first. Skinny was thin because he was weak. He did sell out but was behind the rich man he was very weak. Not knowing any questions would be always hiring people to answer the questions for him. Not looking at the lights would not be looking to the beauty of things. He also doesn't notice any value of anything either, he finds a rare copy of a Hello Dolly record and just basically throws it away on some truck driver. |

I think this song may be about criminal interrogation, but that's just based on the first line. I think the Wolverines are the people who commit the crimes. These people having families, (their puppies) and the out-of-towners watching the police go against them and execute them. And scattering the seeds where the winds and weeds probably is a way of saying trespassing. Another idea is, since the Residents wrote this after 9/11, it may be us bombing the afghans. And everyone had their TV set to watch it (out of towners and their children watched us as we went to kill some) And the out of towners would be also the people out of New York, or even other countries. And perhaps scattering seeds is scattering bombs. |

| Constantinople is the original name of Istanbul, the capital of Turkey. It comes from Constantine, the name of its king back in the ancient times. So this is obviously a place from the past. Now what’s left of this place is slowly withering away. So answers the phrase ‘all the leaves fall off the oak’. Now that is symbolically capturing all beautiful things that wither away from the past. Like ‘all the sheep follow the spoken word’ that means that people follow everything now, and that’s how it all withered. It’s saying that the past was a much more free place. Constantinople is not the place this guy escaping to. Constantinople is something that was and is nevermore. That’s what the city is symbolizing the past. The phrase ‘all my friends are with you’ is saying that all his friends are there in the hopefully in the past, the place he is escaping to. So pretty much he’s trying to escape from the present to the past, to what once was. And he’s escaping to a place that doesn’t exist. It’s kind of sad if you look at it from that angle.
