The Smiths – Rubber Ring Lyrics
|
I'm surprised no-one has commented on this song...it's amazing. The lyrics, I think, are directed towards the sort of folks who say "I've grown out of the Smiths". I dunno what the significance of the phrase "rubber ring" is, though. |

The Smiths – Half a Person Lyrics
|
He's asking if there's a vacancy FOR a back-scrubber...so he's the back-scrubber. So I guess he's asking if he can stay, even if he's has to do some lowly job or whatever. Plus, I've heard before (I'm not sure if this is true or not) that the phrase backscrubber has (presumably pejorative) homosexual connoctations in some places, so in that case it would be more like "so, do you have room for a worthless little poof like me?" |

Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics
|
Actually, the drug interpretation does make pretty good sense. And I've heard thetheory before that Mr. Tambourine Man is a drug dealer...after all, why have a tambourine player in a band if he doesn't have some other job? But I make no claims that the song is intended to be about drugs...Mr. Zimmerman could've been thinking of any number of things when he wrote it. But it's a reasonable interpretation, no? |

I think the back of the car thing is supposed to be a reference to dating/sleeping with someone because they have money or social status, not because you like them or whatever. |

Bauhaus – Stigmata Martyr Lyrics

Personally, I think the first line is "in a crucifixation ecstasy"...crucifixation=crucifix+fixation, which fits a song about stigmata well. |

The Cramps – Sheena's In A Goth Gang Lyrics

I love love love this song. Especially the "she looks so macabre with her cobweb stare" line. I think the title is a take-off of the Ramones' "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker". |

The Smiths – Stretch Out and Wait Lyrics

This song is easy to interpret...it's pretty much "relax, forget all of your troubles, and we'll shag"...but much more beautifully expressed, of course. |

The Smiths – This Charming Man Lyrics
|
Handsome and sexually confused young cyclist crashes and punctures one of the wheels, leaving him stranded, until he's picked up by a strangely obliging gent who convinces him that getting married would be a mistake and a fiasco, and presumably seduces him on the smooth leather of the passenger seat. Gotta love it. |

The Cure – Charlotte Sometimes Lyrics
|
It's based on the book "Charlotte Sometimes" by Penelope Farmer, the songs makes a lot more sense if you've read it. In the book, a girl goes to a boarding school, and every other day, when she wakes up, she's many years before, in the body of a different girl, who switches places with her, which is why she's crying for a girl who died so many years before. |

Beck – Satan Gave Me A Taco Lyrics

This is the greatest song ever written. The lyrics are genious. Beck=greatness.
Is it just me, or does Calvin Johnson guest in this song? It doesn't list him in the liner notes (it credits the backing vocals to "Johnny Cashmachine"), but it certainl sounds like him, and and I now that he and Beck are friends. |

I can't believe no-one has commented on this song yet. The lyrics are amazing, such vivid imagery. I'm pretty sure it's about Hell...I can't help but think of Hieryonomus Bosch when I hear it. |

Beck – Forcefield Lyrics

This song is amazing, Sam Jayne and Beck's voices go together so well. I think it's about selling out...in any way, not just in the music industry, comprimising your value and becoming something you used to despise. |

The Cruxshadows – Eurydice (Don't Follow) Lyrics
| 22 years ago
|
Great song, obviously based the story of Orpheus descending into the Underworld to rescue his belovèd, Eurydice. Orpheus was a singer and musician, hence "if my voice won't move the ferryman", the ferryman of the river Styx, which led to the land of the dead, was Charon, who would not let people cross for free...Orpheus convinced him with song.
"Persephone argued my case to him"...Persephone was the wife of Hades. After playing his sad song, Persephone was so moved that she convinced Hades to give him a chance. So he made a deal that he could take Eurydice back to the land of the living as long as he did not look back at her until they made it to the entrance to the world above. Orpheus, however, became paranoid that Hades had fooled him, as he could not hear Eurydice's footsteps, and looked back right before he made it to the upper world, only to see Eurydice being taken away from him because of his distrust in Hades' word. Very powerful story, and the Crüxshadows did an excellant job of telling it in song. |

I might add that the phrase "liquid diamonds" came from The Sandman (Tori is big Sandman fan, and is good friends with Neil Gaiman, so reference is obvious). |

PJ Harvey – Happy And Bleeding Lyrics

The story of Adam & Eve, and how menstruation (as well as the pain of childbirth) is God's punishment on women because of Eve. Not that I believe this and I doubt PJ does, but it makes for interesting song material. (I've noticed that Peej uses a lot of biblical and religious references in her lyrics). |

Morrissey – A Swallow On My Neck Lyrics
|
This song is about Jake Walters, Morrissey's ex. Morrissey and Jake had a fondness for fake tattoos ('twas Jake's belly with "MOZ" tattoed on it on the back of the "More You Ignore Me" single). The fact that a swallow happened to be the tattoo of choice is nice little pun. |
