I very much enjoy Relient K and am a practicing Catholic. However, that doesn't mean I won't listen to music I enjoy. One of my favorite bands is Nine Inch Nails -- Trent Reznor essentially finances Marilyn Manson.
I don't see it as a conflict of interest to listen to NIN. It's rather like reading a story -- reading a dark book doesn't make you a dark person. NIN just reminds me of some times I went through in my life, as well as I think Reznor is one of the most talented musicians in the modern world. He knows his stuff when it comes to music.
That said, I have a few problems with NIN. One of their CDs, "The Downward Spiral," has a song on it called "Heresy." You can read the lyrics yourself on this site if you really want to, but the chorus sings, "God is dead and no one cares." First off, this is taken from a German philosopher named Nietzsche, but second, TDS really is a story album about a sex addict who loses faith in God, rapes a woman, falls into depression, and finally kills himself (open to interpretation). Even though it is just a story, I'll listen to every song on the CD except Heresy. Just doesn't settle well with me.
But as long as you keep a clear mind and remember that Jesus is the Way, and you can remember that, you will remain firm against anything the devil can throw at you. NIN has turned into something that isn't thrown at me by the devil.

I actually like this song, and my roommate gets kind of weirded out cos I'll be listening to Shai Hulud, NIN, NOFX, The Mars Volta, and then Hilary Duff. I just heard it one day on my bud's tv and really enjoyed it.
I'm not entirely sure what it's about. Some dudes on some forums I visit say it's about masturbation, I tend to think it's not. |

Great thing about everclear is that their songs have so many meanings. Like Evergleam says, it is in one way about the working world, but i nanother, it could be a standard boy-girl song, and other things to other people. It reminds me kinda of Nirvana... but we all know that everclear is exponentially better than Nirvana ;) |

i have a different version. when she says 'he can waterski', mine says 'we watch him on tv'. where yours says 'we watch him on tv, mine says 'he acts atrociously'. when she says 'i'd fuck him if i could', mine says something like 'he hates me as much as i hate you'. when she says he can sometimes even fix the blender', mine says 'he can break my arm in seven places' (my favorite line).

Hey, I'm back with the dude who said an insult to rap. I mean, it's a bunch of fn-sounding rhymey stuff, but it means nothing (a la rap)and also the slapping the dude on the face who's bustin rhymes. Makes sense to me. It's a fun song though, I mean, you can just be in a huge crowd and be like "OOOOOOOHH OH OH OOOOOOOOH" and people will start singing along... I've done it a few times. It's fun! Try it! But bring a friend so you don't look like a TOTAL fool. |

Aren't ALL everclear's songs amazing? Heh, a lowervase "e" in everclear just looks right too. I know they did the entire booklet for SMFTA in lowercase, and I think for American Movie Part I. Is Part II good enough to buy? It's the only one I haven't heard songs off of yet. |

Art's had some mental problems as a lot of people know (look at Normal Like You, Amphetamine, etc...), and this song is (i think anyway) about his suicide attempt when he was living in Santa Monica. Just look:
