Cocteau Twins – Cherry-Coloured Funk Lyrics 16 years ago
It's funny how everyone concedes that Liz's lyrics are often not even able to be transcribed, and yet we all have this intense need to try and put her sounds into words we can string together logically, to come up with lyrics that "make sense" to us. I'm guilty of this myself, even though I love the Twins more than life itself and I know that Liz's lyrics are meant to be felt rather than studied.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Hold You Lyrics 16 years ago
This is really the stand-out track on a rather mediocre pop album with one or two good singles (Crush). The brilliant lyrics, lush arrangement, and melancholy vocal delivery hint at the emotional complexity that was to come on "Sugar Tax." Perhaps OMD could have never sustained the experimental and avant-garde leanings of their first four LPs, but if you're going to sell out it's best to be sophisticated about it. The synth-pop band seemed like they were floundering for a hit during the late 80's until they happened upo the notion of 'pop music for adults' with "Sugar Tax." This song holds the key. Read these lyrics and tell me you don't feel some kind of pang in your heart, especially if you can relate to the situation presented herein. My hat's off to OMD for being the most consistently interesting electronic act of the 80's.

The Lightning Seeds – Sense Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the line "I'm standing high in tiptoes, looking over fences/Waiting for somebody like you to kiss me senseless" is one of the sweetest, most sensitive lyrics ever penned. Bobby Wratten would be proud. This is just about the perfect pop song from a band who made it their mission to construct just that.

Brett Anderson – Love Is Dead Lyrics 17 years ago
Is it just me or is it rather self-indulgent and naval-gazing of a wildly successful, extremely good-looking, and much adored singer to write lines like "No one cares if no one shares my bed" and "In my life, love is dead"??? Brett, I love you, but look past the lint in your belly the next time you write your lyrics...

The Tears – Brave New Century Lyrics 17 years ago
I just listened to this song and I'm fairly certain the line in question is "No more mental masturbation." Anyhow, I truly love both Brett and Bernard, but does anyone else think this album was really over-produced? Bernard's excellent guitar playing is buried beneath grandiose strings and loud drums (completely unnecessary). "Dog Man Star" remains their masterpiece.

Girls in a Coma – Celibate Love Lyrics 17 years ago
This band is called Girl in a Coma and the song is "Celibate Now." Anyhow, this song is fantastic. It's like a punked-up Smiths tune with female vox, heavy on the attitude. It kills me when she sings, "I'm only staying because I will wait for love." Essentially, I think she's staying in a bad relationship because she hopes that the tenison will eventually turn into affection...that if she waits long enough, love will bloom...but we all know it's a lost cause, which makes the song so much more poignant.

Bright Eyes – Gold Mine Gutted Lyrics 19 years ago
In Don DeLillo's (the author Conor mentions at the beginning of the song) novel "White Noise", one of the main characters begins taking a pill that stops the brain from producing the chemical(s) that produce the fear of death. Seeing as how "Digital Ash..." is directly concerned with Conor's death and drug use, I'd say it's very likely Conor's read the novel. I'm sure if there was a drug that stopped people from fearing death, Conor would take it. That is, if it'd even work with all the coke he's hopped up on...

Bright Eyes – Arc of Time (Time Code) Lyrics 19 years ago
In the song "Gold Mine Gutted" Oberst mentions author Don DeLillo. DeLillo's novel "White Noise" is directly concerned with our society's fear of death. The line about the fear of death in the human heart really reminds of me of the novel, which I highly reccomend. It seems like "Digital Ash..." is largely concerned with the fear of death and drugs. I find it ironic that most of Conor's audience is straight edge (I'm assuming) while he's an admitted cocaine addict.

Depeche Mode – A Question Of Time Lyrics 19 years ago
It's obvious that Martin Gore has a fetish for younger girls, or at least he did in the eighties. Songs like this one and many others like "Pleasure, Little Treasure" indulge his penchant for little lolitas. That's one thing I love about Depeche Mode: they're incredibly popular and yet their lyrics remain so subversive. Just goes to show you that people will listen to anything if you coat it with a catchy melody. What's interesting about this song, though, is that it's questionable whether the narrator is any better or worse than the people he claims are pursuing this young girl. Perhaps he wants to protect her...or maybe he just wants to be the first to claim her. Martin Gore, you cheeky little monkey.

New Order – The Perfect Kiss Lyrics 19 years ago
One thing I've always enjoyed about New Order's lyrics is their sexual ambiguity and this song is a prime example. On the surface, it seems to be about Bernard encountering a self-destructive friend. His friend is someone who's at the end of his rope and it's quite obvious. Yet this friend is intent on drowning his sorrows, trying to ignore his pain by going out and having some fun. The reference to the gun could mean a lot of things. Is it his friend's charged sexuality? Bernard makes a comment in the second verse about wishing he would have stayed at home, playing with his pleasure zone (most likely masturbating). This would make sense - he wishes he would have kept his sexual life to himself instead of becoming entangled in whatever "fun" his friend has in store. That's just one possibility, though, for "The Perfect Kiss". It's simply one of the best pop songs of the eighties. A true masterpiece.

Bright Eyes – Waste of Paint Lyrics 21 years ago
I run the risk of sounding cliche' but this song is ME. Heh. I feel, like so many of you, that Conor just sums up everything about life in this song. "I hide behind these books I read while scribbling my poetry, like art could save a wretch like me." Unbelievable.

The Good Life – The Competition Lyrics 21 years ago
I'm so glad people have commented on this song. It's my favorite song from The Good Life as well and it's so bleepin' sad, it's unbelievable. Honestly, I can't listen to it that often because it just crushes me. So beautiful and tragic. The whole CD of Novena on a Nocturn is truly described by the "overwhelming sad" he sings about in the opening track. Anyhow, I think this is just an amazing song about the beginning and end of his relationship with his former wife.

Deadsy – Future Years Lyrics 21 years ago
I listened to this song again today and I suppose I gained a new perspective on it. To me, it seems he's talking about how people change as they get older. Right now, the person he's talking about cries at other people's cold, cruel jokes. However, he says that in time she'll learn to take them in her stride. So, as people get older, they become colder to other people's feelings and their own. Somehow, this as seen as "growing wise" by many people. In reality, they're becoming hollow and ignorant, empty and selfish. They learn to disgard the pain other people feel. He's talking about aging as a process of becoming colder. And maybe this person is trying to escape all of that through suicide, hence the tying of the silk sheet around their neck.

Okay, I hope that made sense. Even if it doesn't, or even if it's not what the song is about at all, at least this is a testiment to Deadsy's music that it makes you THINK and people can discuss it to no end. A truly great, forward-thinking band that's making amazing music.

Pearl Jam – Thin Air Lyrics 22 years ago
There's a dark tension seething just below the surface of this song that suggests it's not as it seems. A melancholy tale of murder hidden in a love ballad?

Pearl Jam – Habit Lyrics 22 years ago
I see this as Eddie confronting the people that listen to and purchase Pearl Jam's albums just because Pearl Jam was incredibly popular. They were just doing it to fit in, to be like everyone else. It happens to every great band that becomes huge. But the key is not to lose your intergrity. Pearl Jam have remained one of the remaining true bands. Their music is art, pure and true, and they don't sell out for anything.

Pearl Jam – In My Tree Lyrics 22 years ago
I see it as a metaphor of some sort...not sure exactly...but it's Eddie's way of confronting loneliness, abandonement, isolation, etc. Is it just me or is No Code one of the most underrated albums of all time??!

Pedro the Lion – The Longer I Lay Here Lyrics 22 years ago
I think people need to stop searching so hard for religious messages in David's lyrics. Honestly. He talks about spiritual issues, he talks about God, but he's not preaching from the Bible. There's a difference. His lyrics are more of a quest for faith in a world consumed with sorrow. All lyrics are naturally open to interpretation but...stop probing for something that isn't there.

Nine Inch Nails – Even Deeper Lyrics 22 years ago
This is a sad song that communicates many things to me. But mostly, I feel as though he's saying the only time he feels good is when he's dreaming; fantasizing about his life being different, the way he wants it to be. And even then, he still wants to destroy it because he can't handle positive things in his life - he doesn't know how.

Nine Inch Nails – Somewhat Damaged Lyrics 22 years ago
I don't think it's a coincidence that this song begins The Fragile. It sets the tone from the beginning - abandonement. This theme is carried all the way onto the next disc (Where is Everbody, for starters). Trent had a breakdown, his "head fell apart", and as a result he was abandoned by everyone that promised they'd be there for him. He's completely isolated, dropped out of the public eye after the five years between The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. He's battling intense self-loathing and loneliness and he's at the point where he doesn't care anymore. He's given up. Thus begins The Fragile.

Nine Inch Nails – Where Is Everybody? Lyrics 22 years ago
The Fragile carries a theme of abandonement, and this continues that. It stems from the opening track, "Somewhat Damaged". He had a breakdown, his "head fell apart", and he feels as though everyone has left him because of it. He's all alone and he hates these people for leaving him - but, as we all know, when you hate everyone else you're really just hating yourself too.

Nine Inch Nails – Reptile Lyrics 22 years ago
I agree...it's the depths that loneliness drags you to. This is my favorite Nine Inch Nails song. The second verse is just such amazing poetry, I can't even believe it. And there's nothing quite like hearing Trent scream "loneliness".

The Smashing Pumpkins – If There Is a God Lyrics 22 years ago
Kahlan, you are correct as far as the lyrics for this song on MACHINA II. But this song has been around for awhile and played live numerous times, with slightly different lyrics. So, that's why they didn't seem "correct" when you saw them here. Alas, I feel as though the MACHINA II lyrics are the best as well - the mention of both male and female aspects of God really brings something else out of the song.

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics 22 years ago
I think it's a look at teenage angst...you people know what it's like in the suburbs. It's miserable. But this song has that magic ability, in that it connotes something different to everyone that listens to it. We all agree on the theme (suburban teenage life) but I bet that, for each of us, it brings to mind a certain moment or feeling. I connect it to that feeling of where you're surrounded by other people in the same situation as you but they're at the same time completely different from you and you feel very alone. So, basically, feeling alone in a crowd. And so transfer that to the teenage suburban setting. I hope that made sense. >:\

The Smashing Pumpkins – Stumbleine Lyrics 22 years ago
I think this is a sad look at teenagers and young love, along with how Billy felt when he was young (nobody nowhere understands anything about me and all my dreams) and probably still feels, to a certain extent, today. This is a beautiful, sorrowful song.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bodies Lyrics 22 years ago
To me, the line "love is suicide" has always referred to the fact that every relationship you will ever be in will eventually end. So, no matter what you do, the connection or love you share with that person will die. It's hopeless, you're killing yourself by being with that person. Alas, people do it anyway, day after day. And I don't know what you mean by Mellon Collie being "well-rounded". It covers a vast spectrum but the entire album is very sad - I don't see any happiness in it, at all. Billy Corgan's entire song portfolio has always been overwhelmed with sorrow. Just be thankful that he has been able to shed light on the tragedies of life through his poetry and music. To paraphrase a great quote I saw once "There is no theme to MCIS except a really sad guy that writes great songs".

The Smashing Pumpkins – If There Is a God Lyrics 22 years ago
It's been a live song for awhile...I got to see Mr. Corgan perform it acoustically. Very beautiful, indeed. This song to me is not so much questioning the existant of God but questioning if he cares...wondering if he's the caring and compassionate father that religion paints him as, or the cold and impersonal being that the harshness of reality suggests.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Snail Lyrics 22 years ago
This song has the quintessential Pumpkins sound to it. That dreamy, clean guitar line and louder than life distortion when it kicks in. Anyway, I feel this song is just a representation of where the band was at that time - they were just concerned with making great songs and playing them. It made sense to sing about flowers and sunshine. At least that's my take on it, after hearing what Billy said during VH1 Storytellers.

The Smashing Pumpkins – The Everlasting Gaze Lyrics 22 years ago
My speculation is that Billy is speaking to God when he says, "You know, I'm not dead". He feels forgotten by God, forsaken by God and this is his (sarcastic) way to remind God that, hey, I'm still alive/help me out here. It makes sense if you think about it. When he says "And through us all, you move" he seems to be speaking about some kind of spiritual entity. Anyhow, let me know what you think.

The Smashing Pumpkins – The Crying Tree of Mercury Lyrics 22 years ago
This has got to be the most depressing sounding song ever. No matter what, you put this on and hear just the opening notes - and your mood is deflated. Not that I'm complaning. I think this is Billy's way of saying he's given more of himself than anyone could ever know. And he's still crying.

KoЯn – Tear Me Down Lyrics 22 years ago
I think this song is actually based on the Columbine school shootings. These lyrics are through the eyes of one of the killers. The world told them that they were nobodies, that they would never amount to anything - and they proved everybody wrong because the media turned them into superstars. That shows you how our society twists the loss of so many lives into a hollow television frenzy. It's ironic that this is turning out to be one of the most popular songs on Untouchables. I don't think that many fans realize what it's really about.

Vex Red – Dermo Lyrics 22 years ago
I just heard this song last night and it's become one of my favorite songs all of time now. It's just so, so beautiful. Some of the most melancholy lyrics I've heard in awhile. In today's modern music scene of insincere happy-posterings and misogynist/homophobic anger, this is just a breath of fresh air. I'm going to try and find this album over the weekend. Anyone that likes classic alternative rock such as Silverchair will like this as well.

Silverchair – Abuse Me Lyrics 22 years ago
That's an interesting look at it, that Freakshow is about fame. To me, it's always been about high school. A lot of these songs are about dealing with people's perceptions of you and the actions that unfold because of those perceptions (No Association, Pop Song For Us Rejects, Learn to Hate, Freak). So it's always seemed like it was about high school, since Daniel was around that age (16, 17) when this came out. And Silverchair still went to a regular high school regardless of their rising popularity. It must have been quite a struggle. So perhaps it's both, dealing with fame and all the bullshit that high school entails. As far as this song goes, I feel it's very, very sardonic. "C'mon, abuse me more, I like it". Of course he doesn't like it; he loathes it. But he doesn't know how to confront it except with sarcasm.

The Smashing Pumpkins – By Starlight Lyrics 22 years ago
I love this song as well. My favorite line being, "My life has been empty my life has been untrue". He's felt so sad all his life...and at last, he feels like maybe he's finally found someone that reflects that sadness back at him, that feels the same way he does. He can see it in her eyes. It's almost like a fantasy; like, by just looking in her eyes, he imagines her to be this dark angel who maybe can't heal him but can at least they can share their sorrows together...and he won't have to be so alone anymore. But will the fantasy come true? It's bittersweet.

This song is basically Billy's "joke" about how he wants to kill himself. Sardonically saying 'this is the greatest day of my life because from now on, things are so bad that they can't get any worse'. It's rather nihilistic, in a way. Anyone else agree?
