Stop pretending, you've got" Here basically talks about selfies and how they pretend to show happiness. Now you can get what the chorus is about (pretty catchy by the way) Then it ends with a very pesimistic message Every inch of space in my heart is filled with something I'll never start The ashes of everything now And then you're black again Can't make it back again From everything now" Ok, the big message of the song is summarized in those lines. We are so concerned about having things and not about loving, that we could probably forget how to love. That love has been consumed by the fire of "everything now" And there's no way back, "Everything now" came to stay. It is amazing how this song reflects on current world in a very pesimistic way using a somehow cheerful tune that could have been easily produced during the 70s Amazing song... |

| @[JohnPaul33:17366] Amen to what you said. It doesn't matter who wrote what. Alice in Chains was collectively one of the best collaborative effort of all time in music if you ask me. They had a chemistry have yet to see again since we lost Layne. Others on here maybe don't know that they worked together on many of the lyrics with Layne writing a lot on his own. And, there are tons of unreleased sons he worked on while at his University Apartment that never have been released. At any rate, you are correct in saying who really gives a #$_# it's just amazing music. I can tell you Alice in Chains and this genre of music is not dead in my house, I have ten year old twins and I am on a mission to show them what real music sounds like. Much different than what we hear on the radio these days. Their songs were raw, passionate, full of feeling that I think anyone can relate to no matter what. I know many think all the songs are about using drugs, but they can be used to relate to any situation. The only songs I know are about drugs are surely labeled that way. It's great that people can relate to this music. I miss Layne so much that I watch videos of him everyday. I am 34 and was younger when they became famous, but I loved them the first time I heard them even that young I related. I love your interpretation of this song. It is spot on. I was going to write my own interpretation but you took the words right out of my mouth. You have a great mind, and thank you for sharing your thoughts. It's nice to hear from people who use their mind and analyze music correctly. To some this song may mean something else, and thats ok. That's the point of music, to keep t loose enough that people can apply to their own lives and interpret as they like. But, I feel you really captured the essence of Jerry and Layne and what they were trying to convey in this song. Great job man | |

| I can't get this song out of my head! I worked as a Radio DJ for many years, starting on a station that played a lot of 70's hits. This song was on the playlist. I was 15 when I started radio and I had no clue about the quality of the lyrics to these 70's folk songs. Today, as I sit on the couch way past bedtime, my 38 year old self is sending a message back to my 15 year old self. It's the same message I hear in O Very Young: Slow down. The line "We are paid by those who learn by our mistakes," is the hardest line to interpret in this song, yet I think probably the most important. A lot of songs on this album seem to revolve around life and are rather existential. My thoughts were that this song is more about our lives are "The working hour," and the "pay" we get is from future generations learning from our mistakes and making the world better where we failed. It's harder to reconcile the meaning of the other lines of the song, which seem to echo more existential dread. |

| What festival was over? What kind of a fall were the boys planning' for? A windfall? Why was there a curfew? Why on earth would the gambling wheel be shut down? There must have been some kind of trouble, but apparently the dust was settling down, because the curfew had been lifted.....The streets were filling' up outside...in anticipation of the show, I guess. The showgirls were passing time, playing cards to pass the time....Lilly had two queens, and was hoping for a third...two queens is a very good hand in 5 card stud....but maybe someone else showed 2 Kings, and she needed that third....The jack of Hearts seems to be a mannerly man, as one might expect form a conman, rather nondescript, since no one paid him much mind when he entered. When Big Jim sees him, Big Jim being a man who notices details, he recognizes him.....maybe a picture on someone's shelf....(Lilly's shelf?)....Bob Dylan has said he never forgets a face. Jack's boys are drilling' through the wall to reach the bank safe, maybe that's why there is a fresh coat of paint....someone patched up their entrance point and painted it so as not to rouse suspicion or point the finger at Lilly who may have helped them by letting them start in her room. Lilly comes form a broken home...someone suggests that Rosemary is her mother...could Rosemary have left her daughter behind to marry Big Jim...is that why she is suicidal? Her guilt in abandoning Lilly who has lived a promiscuous life, and may now be a prostitute, as showgirls in the Old West often were? The house lights dim, but only Jim and Jack are left alone in the room...how is that possible, if the theatre is filled? They must be backstage in a separate room.....both intimates of cast members.....a pen knife is a tiny knife...difficult to kill a big man with....What show has a lead actor as a monk? Romeo and Juliet? The Friar is a main character.....Shakespeare was very popular in the Old West...snippets of the bard mixed with other entertainment......Rosemary rode a carriage into town...from where? Jim's house, I guess...she must have been well taken care of in order to have enough for a carriage.....Dylan's wife, sara lost her father to murder when she was 17 or 18..."She was thinking' about her father, who she very rarely saw.....was Big Jim her father? Kinda weird that someone is hanged the day after a murder...when was the trial? Is Dylan the Jack of Hearts? The non-descript guy who has a special magnetism for women, and who leads a gang of boys (the band) who wait not he ground by the riverbed and can't go anywhere without him? Did Jim get the drop on Jack when the Colt revolver clicked? Is that why Rosemary felt obligated to do Jim in? Is it all just a dream? Has Bob invaded our dreamscape again? Bob's uncle owned a movie theatre or three in hibbing, and Bob watched a lot of flicks.....our dreamscape.....hence his acuteness at re-inventing character voices in his songs.....This is his masterpiece, more clever even than Sad Eyed Lady, Desolation Row, Subterranean, My Back Pages, A hard Rain, or dozens of other candidates.....no one else has ever approached this kind of complexity...not even Joey Dugan. | |

This is a great song, IMHO the best song of one of (if not) the best albums of the 90s. Nevertheless, I don't think it is just a happy song, but bittersweet. I think it is more related to "Creep" than any other song in the album. How? Think about this guy being the same one than the guy in "Creep", inside the frindzone with the very same girl (Sarah) and how he finally decides to do something. "I'm on a roll this time/I feel my luck coud change", refers to the decision the guy has taken: he's going to tell Sarah about his feelings and how he loves her. The answer she's going to give him is not important, what's important is what's happening next. "Kill me Sarah, kill me again" line talks about how Sarah "kills him" any time she tells him she loves him as a friend. Nevertheless, "it's gonna be a glorious day", because, no matter what she is going to say, he will never be again in that position. "Pull me out of the aircrash/plane" refers to the very same friendzone and how he wants Sarah to pull him out of there 'cause he is Sarah's superhero, the friend who's always there for her when she has problems. The one who listen and gives her advice about her boyfriends. It seems this is an importat isue, ath the point that neither "the head of state" has the guy atention. And then he reafirms it. It's gonna be a glorious day and not because of the president call. Finally, the phrase that summarizes everything "We are standing of the edge". It means that no mater what she says, everything is going to change. Maybe both jump down. Or maybe just him (pushed by Sarah's rejection). What's certain is that he feels lucky to have reached that decision, and now his life is going to change. |

The first verse seems to basically be saying: I won't turn into a psycho/serial killer in order to feel good or for my emotional release or something like that. He also seems to direct this sentiment toward the mother and brother of the girl introduced in the second verse. It felt to me like the second verse was about a girl he desires and in a kind of retro/traditional courtship way he's like: I'm going to give her a gold canary to win her over. He also says that there won't be the need to say anything because it will just be such a powerful gesture, which I don't know if it's correct or not, but it makes me laugh. Then in the third verse/melody change I feel like he loses her, but he's kind of accepting about it i.e. "as my hands work on the birdcage, you disappear into the air". He appears to even want her "to fly away, fly today". Could be completely wrong and I'm sure the cloud control guy has never even thought about such a deep interpretation, but that's what I felt listening to it! |
