Rage Against the Machine – Killing In The Name Lyrics
| 21 years ago

Re: the anarchy thing.
Didn't Marx say that the world was due to progress from capitalism to socialism to communism?
People confuse socialism and communism. Socialism is a system in which the major means of production are owned by the government, in the interests of equality. Eventually, Marx said, people would no longer have the concept of private property, and everything would be owned in common. There would thus be no need for a centralised government to keep people's greed in check. Hence, anarchy.
There are two uses of the word anarchy. One is a term used to describe chaos where there is no government or it has no control. The other is the political ideology advocating no centralised government. Libertarianism is actually anarchy too, really -- just right-wing.
Anyway, that's what I learnt from my social studies class, reading, and talking to other people in protest marches. You may question my sources. |

Cake – Satan Is My Motor Lyrics

I think it's about the contradictions between who we want to be and what we actually end up being/doing. It can be pretty depressing sometimes...When I first heard this song I thought it was about a model citizen who wanted to break free and be "bad", so to speak. But I like XKillerX's interpretation, too. |

I think nroc and MorningStar kind of have a point. It's about the impossible search for the perfect girl...impossible because there are so many good qualitites that are incompatible...
OTOH this girl has a very definite and clearly defined personality, she's not some weird mishmash. She's stylish, self-sufficient, capable, financially independent, in charge, even a bit of a yuppie. |

oops...lindyswingster already said what i just said in more detail. sorry.
Anyway, I was reading about the Church of Satan the other day and their main philosophy is that there is no heaven or hell, so the point of life on earth is to indulge your desires while you can. apparently, there's not actually much of that sacrificing chickens stuff except to piss of the christians. they see satan as more of a pan-like hedonistic figure than a personification of evil.
I just thought this might be relevant what with all the sheep and goats and biblical scriptures and stuff. |

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give It Away Lyrics

Avril Lavigne is a prime example of exploitation of musical subcultures for commercial gain. This song is about love and sharing what you have. Who's the communist there? Whoa...too much time thinking about politics. Anyway....fucking Avril. She's so low. And what the hell is there to interpret about Sk8er Boi, apart from the spelling? It's the least subtle song I've ever heard. I bet all the comments are from the Stalk and Kill Avril Society (really exists). Where was I? Oh yeah, after listening to this song, I now have a strange impulse to go and live in holy poverty. |

Coldplay – Don't Panic Lyrics

Looking at the lyrics, it does seem very ironic.
"bones sinking like stones
all that we've fought for
homes, places we've grown
all of us are done for " is all very despondent, an all-is-lost kind of sentiment.
And the chorus is kind of bitter and sarcastic.
I never thought of it like that before, but then I never properly thought about the lyrics at all. I just kind of listened in a blissful haze. |

kurtisalive, please never do that again, it makes my day
harder. anyway, if you press enter at the end of each line,
it won't show up like that.
Whatever I think about Courtney (and my opinion of her
is not high), I believe that Kurt loved her deeply. he was
a very complex person, and he probably would have
killed himself sooner or later anyway (me being cynical).
Anyway, you _may_ have heard a rumour that Kurt is dead.
If this is the case, then nothing we can say or do can
change anything. I just feel sorry for Frances.
And yeah, don't buy the journals. It's SICK. |

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics

Jlmmy_Hoffa -- yes, I've read all that crap on the Kurt Cobain murder theories. but I think the murder theories come from a deep-seated denial that Kurt was fucked up enough to kill himself. he was. he had a painful life and he put that into his songs, that's why they're so great.
also, I believe he genuinely loved Courtney. she may be kind of a confrontational person, but so was Kurt.

Nirvana – In Bloom Lyrics

|
dhtowng7, this song has a REALLY fucking clear message.
in the liner notes to Incesticide kurt said something like "if you in any way hate women, homosexuals or people of different colour -- fuck off and leave us alone! don't come to out shows and don't buy our records. last week a girl was raped by two wastes of sperm and eggs while they sung the lyrics to our song Polly. I'm sorry if I'm being anally PC about this, but it's hard to cope knowing we have plankton like this in our audience."
This song is about more than one thing, but mostly plankton.
Now, if you really want to see people try and make sense out of lyrics that mean nothing, go to the Red Hot Chili Peppers section of this site. |

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Can't Stop Lyrics

Have I really not commented on this song? All right then...SLATE, I'm sorry but "Cop Top" etc is in the liner notes. There are a couple of mistakes in these lyrics though, I think...I'll check it out later...Mind you, it's a rather confusing song.
I think this song is about young successful musicians. There are a lot of music references, a lot of references to fame & influence, a lot of references to youth culture...so that's what leads me to that conclusion. I could be wrong.
Another theory -- it's just a weird, surreal song. Not everything has to mean something. The weird, surreal video clip would fit in with this. |

Re: mass media. I read an interview with Anthony Kiedis in which he was complaining about the so-called "rock resurgence", and saying that even if RHCP went around in limosuines all day they would still be more punk rock than these kids, because they were making music because they loved it, rather than just taking advantage of what was cool now. So definitely more than a hint.
#I'm Yertle the Turtle, oh marvellous me, for I am the ruler of alllll that I see...I think I should go talk on the page for that song. |

FreeofInsanity & Darktoss...every album has a very different flavour...this album has a lot of seemingly random lyrics, but I don't think they have no meaning. I think Anthony just decided "fuck it, they can puzzle the meanings themselves". I do that a lot when I write. And have a look at a lot of modern poetry -- you have to think about the words for a while to find the meaning, but it's there. |

sally_cinnamon -- I don't think any of them _are_ gay. They do say they love people a lot, sometimes guys, but they don't necessarily mean romantic love. They're just a Sensitive New-Age Band who aren't paranoid about seeming gay :).

Jesusfreak, the Chilis have always been a very free-spirited band. I'm not saying that they don't have their spiritual side, but they would almost certainly not write a song about Jesus. Does the line "I've got a welt/from the Bible Belt" (Power of Equality) mean nothing to you? How about the entirety of Shallow be thy Game, up to and including the title?
That said, however, I think they do believe in a loving and caring God...just not organised religion. |

I really like One Hot Minute, even if the band hates it. But there is no _way_ Dave Navarro is better than John Frusciante (correct spelling). John is a fucking genius. Check out some of his solo work, like the latest album To Record Only Water For Ten Days, or some of the earlier stuff like Smile From The Streets You Hold. It's very interesting. Very beautiful and understated. |

Rage Against the Machine – Testify Lyrics
| 21 years ago
|
With the George Orwell stuff...
"Who controls the past controls the future" etc was a reference to the occupation of the main character in 1984. He worked for the propaganda department editing the news archives to make it appear as if living standards had gone up exponentially, and that the government's predictions were always exactly right. The people were so brainwashed they didn't notice. This enabled the government to keep their handle on society.
The bit about "we've found your weakness/and it's right outside the door" is also a 1984 reference. The government has a torture chamber _everyone_ cracks in, because it contains whatever the worst thing in the world is to them.
The song _has_ to be about the first Gulf War. |

I agree with Kaisute. I think that a lot of the time people think RHCP are being sweet and innocent when they're actually not, and vice versa. This is such a mellow song, people think it must be totally clean. But Pea, although it's full of swearing, actually is innocent -- just in an uninhibited sort of way. Does that make sense? |
