Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 13 years ago
it's about someone with delusions of grandeur, who just discovered he wasn't who he thought he was (the man he sees naked and doesn't recognize is himself) and temporarily becomes schizophrenic or otherwise psychotic. He has visions that reveal what other people think of him. Most of the song is just nonsense that rhymes and paint interesting pictures in your mind that don't really represent anything concrete, except advance the general theme of the song: that this guy has a fantasy that he's someone he's not, and in his paranoid visions he's letting his imagination go with what people think of him. Athe end of the song he's back to normal, just depressed because his fantasy is destryoed.

Eminem – Love The Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) Lyrics 13 years ago
They are responding to MY comment, not mhbuddy and I stand by what I said. Eminem is using the abusive tactic of "blaming the victim" in this song, plain and simple.

At least America only has a rate of 1 in 3 women being abused by their husband or boyfriend. In most countries it is 50%. From the stats I've seen 1 in 10 men are abused, almost all of which overlap with the 1 in 3 women. Who do you think gets it worse in these cases.

I am not saying it DOESN'T happen to men as well, but I am saying that when it does happen to men the woman is getting worse. Furthermore, I am suggesting that this song does not simply describe the cycle of abuse -- it plays the role within that cycle of "blaming the victim" and telling the woman that she shares in the blame for the man's actions and deserves what she gets.

This song "sheds light" on nothing. There is no remorse on Eminem's part -- in fact he promises it will happen again! There is no warning on Rihanna's part -- in fact she likes it and believes going back to her man is the right thing to do. When I heard this song the first time all the only messages I heard were "this is normal" and "keep in mind it's partly the woman's fault too, ya know."

And judging by the overwhelming majority of comments on this site, I was absolutely right. These messages are being internalized by countless individuals who relate to this song because they are in abusive relationships themselves.

So then, you're in agreement that women should accept that they deserve it and take back the abuser?

As I've been saying throughout, this song is straight up poison!

I'm sorry. But this is "just a song" in which the man shows absolutely no remorse for his actions and blames the victim while the woman displays so little self-esteem that she thinks this relationship is really what is best for her.

This song is poisoning the heads of all men seeking justification for their behavior and all women trapped in the cycle of abuse which leads them to think this behavior is normal.

It's called the "Cycle of Violence" or "Cycle of Abuse" -- which this song shamelessly glorifies. Therefore, you are correct that the end of this song will lead right back to the beginning.

This is called "blaming the victim." It is something abusive men do to maintain control over their girlfriend/wife.

Eminem – Love The Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) Lyrics 13 years ago
That is similar to the second-most common interpretation of "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga, in which the singer's desire to be part of an abusive relationship is taken to be a metaphor for desiring fame at the expense of individualism and freedom. ("The Fame Monster," as Gaga calls her album that song is from.)

I disagree that there's such a layered meaning in the case of this song, but it's possible.

Judging by the responses to this song I've seen so far, this song is pure poison. It seems most posters so far are admitting they have experience being in or witnessing domestic violence and this song reinforces that such abuse is normal and that continuing the cycle of violence is okay.

Who the hell do you think you are? For one thing, Random did not say one thing mildly insulting (unless pointing out out the obvious -- that you're wrong -- is insulting to you). It doesn't take research to figure out lame ass Phil Collins wrote another lame ass song about a treacherous woman.

And no I don't like this song. It just drives me crazy at work b/c I hear it every day 'cause I couldn't figure out what he was singing.

I believe everyone, of course, that this is by a gay guy singing about another guy. But is there any way to tell that from the song? "Contextually" this song could be about a woman singing to a man if a woman sang the exact same lyrics.

Belle & Sebastian – The State I Am In Lyrics 15 years ago
I see this song as describing a dream and how he interprets it. At the outset he says he is puzzled by the dream, but it made him think of being a child. To him, the story represents the cycle of his life over those years. His conclusion is that "I gave myself to sin. I gave myself to providence. And I'll be there and back again." The first verse alludes to being exposed to sinful behavior by his siblings, and then engaging in sinful behavior himself. All the while, the sinful behavior is performed in the context of good intentions: marriage, mutually beneficial relationships. "The State" he is in is being human. The dream is about being human: loving, caring, hurting, misunderstanding, abusing, hoping, idling -- falling. He knows he is fallen, and knows he has to reach out to God. The line, "there was a pregnant pause" is brilliant because it describes how he felt like, "God, please save me anyway. I promise to do my best."

Perhaps he asked early on, perhaps for the first time in 1975...and didn't feel like he got his answer until 1995. The "pregnant pause" gives the listener a humorous visual image of a sinner asking for salvation and God kinda staring him down until he responds. However, to him the "pregnant pause" represents the twenty years since he first thought as a child, "How can I know there's a God?"

Furthermore, I view this song as Stuart Murdoch's mission statement for Belle and Sebastian. He declares that humans are fallen, that he has chosen Providence, and had to do so more than once. In his lyrics he will describe human behavior on Earth as he sees it, but not as God wants it. He can't speak for God. Most of what he will write about will be of the Devil, but he must have you know from the outset he has chosen God. Hopefully this song has encouraged thousands of others to do the same.

And the better version is Dog On Wheels.

I really honestly truly believe this is a song about a girl who had a sexual experience with another girl when she was an adolescent. Now, as a woman, she turns to lesbian affairs to satisfy her sexual desires. To her, it doesn't feel like cheating or fooling around when it's another woman involved and not a man. She didn't become a lesbian herself, but this song is a thank you to the lesbian that turned her on to.... alternative means of sexual pleasure.

paradoxical, i know, but nothing else makes sense to me

She says she's alone in a big bed, and at noon she mentions someone has put in half a day. Obviously the person she shares the bed with was up early and attacked the day but she didn't. Maybe she's unemployed? Maybe her lover has her locked up? Why is she going to cry because of the weather? Is her domestic partner abusive? The weather is an excuse to stay in bed. For being such a cheerful melody, this is definitely a dreadfully depressing song.

bartoshek is absolutely right that this is a song about having a baby. But more than that, it is a song reminding young women that their sexual desires are directly tied to taking part in the "miracle" of creating new life: "When May is rushing over you with desire to be part of the miracles you see in every hour." May is hook-up month from the beginning of time (hence it is the month of proms and mayfairs). This song is telling young girls to cherish the memories of their youthful, burdenless sex lives when they are older because it is an experience which will (should) only happen once as life moves into adulthood and parenthood.

ars, I totally relate to your comment. When I was 11 or whenever this song was a hit it was one of my favorite songs, then I downloaded it when I was in my 20s and realized it wasn't really that good.

What is good about this song is her singing and the intricate arrangement. The buildup is awesome. And upon considering this is a standard pop song exploring domestic abuse, and the pained vocals and haunting arrangement perectly accompany that them, I found a whole new reason to like this song 10 years later.

Paul Simon – Loves Me Like a Rock Lyrics 15 years ago
I interpret this song to be a political satire. The person who says "he has lost faith in anything besides what he can see and touch" is pretty much in line with what i'm saying. It IS a spiritual song because it acknowledges the presence of the devil, but the only knowledge of God known to the singer is that he was "consecrated." I don't think "mama" ever refers to his biological mother, but to his lovers. Exploring sexuality is how he experiences God. In the first verse he loses his virginity. In the second verse, he "can SNATCH a little purity."

I think the idea of the line "loves me like a rock" is that when a man can get to be "a rock" for a woman, she will get him off at his beck and call. The singer has learned to experience religion by becoming a woman's god, rather than joining in a union with a woman for God's intended purpose to "be fruitful and multiply." This leads him to become President, a man who is playing God over the United States ...Nixon definitely was under the sway of the devil, believing that if he could be omniscient he could rule the nation in a God-like way. I'm left-leaning, but I honestly believe Nixon was one of our most talented and well-intentioned presidents. However, this song points out exactly what his tragic flaw was which led to his downfall. Nixon did not use God's gifts for their intended purpose.

I ought to add that I at first absolutely detested this song and whenever it came on it made me want to bang my head off shit and scream really loud. It grew on me, obviously, and what I originally thought were retarded lyrics I later read as deep and multi-layered, just very simple. But I never thought for a single second it was his actual mother who he refers to as "mama" because "she gets down on her knees and hugs me 'cause she loves me like a rock" certainly sounded like he was getting head. Oral sex is one-sided sexual gratification performed as "mama's" worship of her rock. It is not a sexual union which produces children for God. One person dominating and commanding over another like God vs. two people in union following God's command.

I find this song to be very misogynistic and ironic -- an excellent technique for creating a biting satire of American government and culture. What is ironic is the singer thinks he warded off the devil's temptation. However by embracing the societal norms of male superiority and embracing the "perfection" of America's system of government, the singer has rejected God and attempted to become God himself -- the very crime for which Lucifer was banished from heaven in the first place!

I never once thought this was about a one-night stand. In fact, I always thought it was about a very long-term relationship and more likely a marriage ("take the kids"). If you follow the theme of the album, this relationship has become stale, but Stills is devoted to this woman because of how invested his life is in hers. To me it describes an isolated hot moment in a relationship which has long been cold. He compares this sexual encounter to being like when they had first been together.

Furthermore, although I wouldn't totally discount the idea it's about a black woman as I am the one-night stand theory, I think the idea of her being a "Dark Star" is more at how the post-lovey-dovey period feelings of sparking a new romance left her and emptied her love for him, though his love for her has been strengthened by unconditional devotion despite the loss of that initial sexual attraction.

Let's not look too far into the religious significance of this line. I think he's using the Bible to compare her diary to because her diary is long, and it contradicts itself if you don't look at the recorded events and rules to live by from the past in the context in which they were written.

Belle & Sebastian – Seeing Other People Lyrics 15 years ago
The majority of people believe this song to be about two boys. The majority are wrong. The song is very non-specific, so I'm not going to say you can't apply that interpretation if it so suits you, but I'm pretty sure Stuart said himself on the band's website it is about a boy and a girl. But I'm going to get about the serious work of debunking this widespread myth that this song is specifically about two boys experimenting...

In the first verse they are kissing just for practice, but things suddenly start to get serious again. The boy notices things are getting hot and the boy states, "could we please be objective 'cause the other boys are queuing up behind--" and he is cut off by a hand over his mouth. The hand over the window hides from the boys in the queue that the two appear to be back on again as a couple. The hand over his mouth is not to stop him from kissing, but to shut him up.

The gigolo line, to me, simply means that when she goes out on the weekend she starts her working week with the memory of empty sex instead of having had the consistency of being with the same person every weekend.

To kiss your elbow most certainly is possible. She is kissing the INSIDE of her elbow with her arm wrapped around her face, daydreaming about the dream boy she wants...but perhaps doesn't realize she already has this boy; it's just not her dream boy. She kisses her reflection, admiring her own beauty and imagining herself loved as she wants to be loved...and she can't understand why the boys she wants to love her that way are going for other girls. The narrator is frustrated and suggests that she would be better off with girls because other girls will understand how a girl wants loved, while the boys she is being with only understand how to get her in bed.

The line "at least they know where to put it" is the main reason that, to me, this song CANNOT be about two boys, because this song is focused on the pleasure of the person the song is being sung to. This means that the person being sung to has a vagina and, if she does not want the narrator should go with girls because they fully understand how a vagina works.

To me, this song seems more to be about a boy who is frustrated that this girl keeps coming back to him because he understands her, but she is looking for a better boy who can understand her the same way. The girl is striving too hard to find a "perfect" relationship and refuses to settle for the best thing she's got. The boy won't allow himself to become sexually involved with her again until she is willing to give herself to him completely because he loves her completely and needs the same love in return. Therefore, the song ends with the same frustrated verse it began with.
