Furthermore, he maturely urges us throughout the album to refrain from judging those who do not "fit" into our living mode because "coolness" is not fitting in, contrarily it is possessing the courage to find what best fits for you; what's "right" for you. |

ive thought the same thing. that its about falling asleep. however, i think its more about dreaming, or rather, the need to dream. letting go of time, allowing your imagination and subconscious take reign... a time to stop thinking. when you dream, time is fluid. you often have intricate dreams that seem to span hours, and yet you wake up to find only several minutes have passed. you let go of time. when you dream, your imagination takes control and has capabilities that are comparable to that of a child. as an adult, you often neglect your imagination's capabilities. remember when the sidewalk was lava? or your car was under the dining room table? that sense of reality is often what occurs in your dream state. gradually, at the end of the song, he drifts off to sleep and begins to dream. i really like this song. i really like dreaming. |

magpiemaniac has got it! david byrne an anti-enviornmentalist?! no way. its just irony... byrne compares the earth without materialism as a type of garden of eden and humans as adams and eves. and arent we supposed to be satisfied with what was available to us... this garden of eden that offers us everything? but because were human, we are never satisfied, just like the character in this song. i think byrne is saying that now that we have manipulated the earth to reap its benefits and instilled this sense of materialism there is no going back to the days of the garden of eden or the days of hunters and gathers beucase all of us we think like the character in this song. "i cant used to this life style!!" and thats the worst part. we'd actually miss dairy queens and parking lots. |

yeah this video is really funny. zach galifianakis dancing in the ocean... its definately "ache" i really like the way this song ends. the chorus is great too. she goes on and on about how its not about love and making it sound as though she doesnt want to be in love and then she says "i miss that stupid ache."... as if she is telling us that for all the crap that comes along with loving someone she still misses it. i think the chorus is reflective on the feelings a lot of people have towards love. |

so this song is about spontaneous combustion. i read this story in an interview. before brandon wrote this song he saw and article in a magazine about spontaneous combustion that had a picture with a "guy fried up above his knees." he wrote about reading the magazine in the song... "Not two days ago, I was having a look in a book and I saw a picture of a guy fried up above his knees." then he just sort of took the song and wrote it from there... talking about why he wants to spontaneously combust. simple as that |

this seems to be about walking the thing line between being friends or more than that. hence the name "the walk." theres also hints that maybe she doesnt want to kiss him because she would be cheating on someone or he would be cheating on someone. the song seems to be about one moment in the relationship where she needs to make this important decision in an instant. maybe its in real time...? in the song i think shes leaning more towards wanting more than just friends but she knows if she acts on those feelings shes going to have to deal with a life time of repercussions...."freeze or make it forever." this song really hits home with me. im not sure what she chooses but i chose the kiss and i dealt with the repercussions but either way i dont try to tell myself that it was his fault they way she does in the song. |

its obvisous rob is frustrated with the culture and its interest in learning and reading... or rather the lack there of. he discusses the vicious cycle of our culture of "what the public wants is what the public gets." its what i call "the crap cycle." let me explain... if the public doesnt want to read and learn the media and everything else will give the public what they want. and since what the public wants is hardly education the media give them crap. crap tv, crap news, crap schooling....and the kids who grow up on this crap tv and crap media dont get an eageriness to learn instilled upon them. instead of being interested in dinosaurs and the civil war they interested in who is having sex with who and why brad left jennifer (ie.... TV set - a face to respect, albeit hardly dressed) and since the public doesnt have any yearning to learn and read and etc theyre not going to get it and its going to go on and on. rob is asking why even bother when everything sucks so much. voting, tv, reading... etc. why bother trying to learn when theres no point because everything is so crappy and corrupt? so he begs for someone to give us hope. i think this song is great. |

i think the song is about the band touring europe and how they had the mentality of most americans: "were the best. why do we need to know about other cultures. they should learn our language." but as they traveled and toured they realized people hated america and most wouldnt talk to them because they were american so in order to socialize they dubbed themselves canadian. "this passport once was golden" - is a conceit portraying how america really did used to be great but is no longer viewed the same way. it really sums up the idea of the song: america isnt as great as it used to be. now, this story of the tour and calling themselves canadian may be true but its more likely fiction used to tell the story of so many other travelers: they come to find that americans arent embraced as much as they thought. i think this song is very witty and an awesome commentary. i ask myself the same question... when did it all go wrong? |

right you are, luckymrbriteside. thats what i think the songs about too. i tend to think this song is about different philisophies on life. every few lines is a different perspective or idea... we love love love and die, were just recreations for doctors and lawyers, love wont let you down, youre not what you do to your body, you learn from your failures...etc. etc. i think it about what you believe when you dont believe in god (hence the name of the song). but i could be way off. |

these two people are in love. they are away from each other and while away from each other they cheat.... but cheat in a very deep sense. not just sex... but more... like an emotional affair. he realizes how terrible it is what hes done. he also gets upset at the woman, saying, you may have been lonely but you could have called and you cheated on me and that she let him down. he realizes that they just dont want to be lonely. and shes coming back from being away and hes trying to forgive and forget and let it all go as she makes her way back. i think at the end of the songs he gets past it all realizing that they both didnt want to be alone. its a very beautiful song. i love how he goes back and forth from blaming himself to getting upset with the woman. excellent. its true to the thought process... well, mine at least. |

the oboe part at the begining of the song is actually from a major part of a movement from a Berloiz symphany. in it, the oboe represents a farmer in the hills calling to another farmer who answers (the english horn). Berloiz hears them while hes laying in the fields of the hills. eventually (at the end of the movement) the one farmer calling (oboe) finds that he is replied to only by thunder - it begins to storm. its funny. i actually just saw this symphony performed and then i heard this song like two days later. what i find interesting is that the movement of the Berloiz symphony the oboe is replied to with thunder, suggesting its raining and this song ends with... "rain is falling, looks like love." this song really coincides with the Berloiz story if you know the details... its really a love story. read up on it. its surprising. |

you must remember though that this song is a letter. if you look at the lyrics in the liner its starts off with "dear friend," etc etc. jenny (or whoever) is writing to her friend saying stuff like: like we got a job and you got married. it all worked out for you. you have a baby and a man... even though you used to say you were "flawed" if you werent free (she was flawed if she was with a man) as for me, she says, ive met a married man. he visits me and when he leaves his wife hes gonna come be with me in california. she then goes on to reassure her friend that its better that shes leaving ... her husband perhaps.. because of what follows... late one night jenny gets the phone and its her friend (who shes writing to) sobbing because she realized her husband is cheating on her. and she tells jenny that she only got married cause she felt obligated but now she loves him and her baby etc. etc. jenny tells her friend... in this letter...not on the phone (after she realizes it on the phone with her friend) that the man shes been seeing is her friends husband but says in the letter... he will never leave you for me because, remember, i am flawed if i am not free. well, thats what i think. its a pretty awesome plot though and it all unfolds in a letter! but yeah... |
