I love how he references "Indoor Living" from "I Am The Movie." In that song, he doesn't think he can succeed. In this song, he does.

Btw, I disagree completely with warlord. He isn't thanking anyone. He's simply saying, "I can do this, but not completely alone. Can you help?"

Paramore – Turn It Off Lyrics 11 years ago
People, read what ParamorePrincess23 posted, Hayley's words about the song:

"In accordance with 'Playing God' this song is the emotional result. How I feel when I think about the stupidity displayed by so called Christians and it seems that people who don't fall back on faith seem to have life figured out. Or at least it works fairly smoothly on the surface. What I've found out is there is beauty in "figuring out"... I hope I never have life figured out for myself. I want to be in a content state of learning and growing and I hope God can always show me from the bottom there are more ways to look up."

The song is about wanting to think for yourself and have the pride to say "this is how I want to do it, not anyone else not God, me."

The first verse is all about how she has believed for so long, but now her religion seems to go against her very nature. Religion preaches that being selfish is wrong, but she's understanding the importance of it.

The "it" she is turning off in the chorus is her reliance on God. She is expressing desire to take pride in herself (a major "sin"), but feels guilty because she is taught pride is wrong, so she says she's being spiteful.

The cliff is about how life is very hard on your own, without a crutch to fall back on. The toughest thing a human can ever do is say s/he's going to figure it out on his/her own, but once you bottom out that first time, it's never that hard again.

The verse about the curtain, the wheels, and the non-existence is most certainly about God/the afterlife. She's living success. She's understanding how the world works. It's making her question her faith. It's certainly connected with the verse about people taking shortcuts and false solutions. She's seeing the way everyone who is supposedly "good" actually acts.

The difficulty she is having is that she's finding more fulfillment from her selfish and earthly desire than her selfless and heavenly desires, and she has been taught the former are wrong and the latter are correct, so she feels guilty. In actuality, the opposite is true.

This song is extremely Objectivist in nature, though I doubt Hayley realizes it.

The song is with the theme of the album: settling for less than what is actually your potential. The girl is with a guy that pales in comparison to what she really wants.

The Higher – It's Only Natural Lyrics 12 years ago
The best acronym I can find for AOA is Art of Attraction, a term given to the pick up community (by the members of the community). I'd like confirmation from the band, but I believe it is correct, as this song is definitely about the skill involved in the pick up and the pick up community is surely big in a city such as Las Vegas.

Plain White T's – That Girl Lyrics 13 years ago
It's definitely not "your girl." It can sound like "your" if you convince yourself, but there is no other reference to the girl being with anyone else.

This song is so catchy they should release it as a single. It would definitely blow up. I know it's explicit ("you made me come inside"?!), but no more risque than Katy Perry's song.

SmoothRider41,
All interpretations are not equally valid. Saying this song about Bush is incorrect because it requires the listener to assume a personal opinion that is not present in the song: a negative opinion of Bush. For instance, you say he is "just manipulating." That statement is an opinion and there is nothing in the song suggesting Bush is a bad president, disingenuous , or running the country poorly.

radio donner,
Exactly. The song is about someone who went to prep school and talks to CC like he had a hard life.

First off, this AFI and My Chemical Romance are not the same type of band. Look at AFI's history.

Second off, if this song is a parody, it does a poor job. A parody needs some level of self awareness in that it is actively referring to its source material.

Terra88,
It's ignorance when people speak without knowledge on a subject. Attributing this song to Bush demonstrates a lack of knowledge of the culture that CC is criticizing.

"ig·no·rance (ĭg'nər-əns) Pronunciation Key
n. The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed."

The problem is not being ignorant, but being ignorant of one's own ignorance.

"I made that up, right there. Pretty sweet, right? Keep it. See you nerds later."

Paramore – Temporary Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about the opposite of what maybextomorrow said. The only permanence is the state of being temporary.

Basically, they keep trying and trying to make it work (repetition), but it never does work (ends in failure).

The entire song is her bemoaning herself for falling into the trap of thinking it will work over and over and over again, but only ending up hurt.

"When repetition ends, we'll start over"
When they break the cycle of temporariness, they'll start over from the beginning, but what creates the cycle is her continually thinking it's possible to start from the beginning.

Now that I think of it, the song is a Catch 22.

khofuswiftclaw,
I do believe that you're an idiot, so I'll keep my laws off your body if you keep your ignorance off of my music.

-Bush is from Texas. PA is only a high school. His accent is legit.
-The song refers to the accent as being a "street" accent. Southern accents are far from "street" accents.
-The first stanza ends with the word "here" implying the speaker is in the same place as the subject. If the subject is Bush, where is here that CC can one day be that Bush will one day leave?

Jimmy Eat World – Dizzy Lyrics 14 years ago
No One Really,
Yes, that entire verse is about when they had sex.

He tells her he's never felt this way. It's hard to know what "this" feeling is, but she tries to respond to him by saying she's on birth control and she doesn't have regrets, so it would seem he was feeling apprehensive and she was attempting to quell his fears. Then, since the whole song is about his regrets, he wants to know if she really didn't regret what happened because the theme of the song is him facing his past and wondering if he regrets it.

Dashboard Confessional – Matters of Blood and Connection Lyrics 14 years ago
Lyssie,
Please keep your ignorance away from music that others cherish. Bush went to school in Andover, not Cambridge. That statement, of course, assumes that the song is referring to Cambridge, MA and not Cambridge in England. Also, there is no mention of war, just living off of trust funds (which a high number of people at prep school do).

Anyway, I was trying to figure out where the new tone and lyrical content from this album came from and this song showed me. It sounds to me like CC is starting to meet the people at the "top" and is realizing they aren't so impressive. He's starting to get it.

Um, this song isn't about cheating. He has amazing sex with a girl, but everything that comes after it is is so ridiculous he wonders if he ever could of liked the girl, so he does the simplest and smartest thing and says goodbye.

The "feels so good to be so bad" is a continuation of the sexual reference in the first stanza.

Cute Is What We Aim For – Lyrical Lies Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is the singer warning his girlfriend not to allow herself to be manipulated because she wants to be "dressed in poetry" and "resized." The "body on the mattress" and "makeup on the pillow" are proof that she could be manipulated to bed because she may have been by him. He challenges her in the last line of that verse to consider whether he manipulated her or not by basically saying, "Do you honestly believe I'm not lying to you?"

The old man represents someone who spent his life trying to fix the problem rather than taking advantage of it by "chasing skirts." He doesn't blame guys who manipulate girls to bed because he understands why they do it, but would never do it himself, so he does morally blame them, and would try to warn the woman he loved the same way the singer is trying to warn his girlfriend.

"and I think what I just wrote is going over my head
I’m stealing lines from myself
And what I said was never said
Its just a lyrical lie
Made up in my mind"

That verse means 1) the idea is so complex the singer is not sure he understands it himself 2) he made the story up for the purposes of the song, setting up that his lyrics are lies.

Remember, the song is Lyrical LieS, insinuating that all his lyrics are lies.

Fall Out Boy – The Carpal Tunnel of Love Lyrics 14 years ago
FOB! At the disco,

The song is not about masturbation. It's about writing, writing for the "emo scene."

The Tunnel of Love is an old fashioned tradition. Lovers used to take a boat rides through a tunnel that was filled with stereotypically romantic imagery.

Emo is a "boat ride" through a "tunnel" that is filled with stereotypically romantic imagery.

The carpal comes in because you can get carpal tunnel from writing too much.

It's another disillusioned look at the emo scene. The hand of the artist is the fan's gateway.

(And by the way, a vagina is more like a tunnel, not a penis.)

Ok, first off, these lyrics are ALL wrong. Let me transcribe what I hear:

I’m gonna make it bend and break.
Say a prayer, but let the good times roll
in case God doesn’t show.
(Let the good times roll.)
And I want these words to make things right,
but it’s the wrongs that make the words come to life.

Who does he think he is?
Is that the worst you’ve got?
Better put your fingers back to the keys.

One night and one more time,
thanks for the memories
even though they weren’t that great.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
One night, yeah and one more time,
thanks for the memories.
Thanks for the memories.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
Oh.

I’m looking forward to the future,
but my eyesight is going bad
And this crystal ball...
It’s always cloudy except for (except for)
when you look into the past (look into the past)
one night stand, one night stand.

One night and one more time,
thanks for the memories
even though they weren’t so great.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
One night, yeah and one more time,
thanks for the memories.
Thanks for the memories.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
Oh.

They say you I think
in the form of crunching numbers.
In hotel rooms,
collecting ??? lovers.
Get me out of my mind.
Get you out of those clothes.
I’m a letter away
from getting you into the mood.

One night and one more time,
thanks for the memories
even though they weren’t so great.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
One night, yeah and one more time,
thanks for the memories.
Thanks for the memories.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
Oh.

One night and one more time,
thanks for the memories
even though they weren’t so great.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
One night, yeah and one more time,
thanks for the memories.
Thanks for the memories.
"He tastes like you only sweeter."
Oh.
-----
I can't figure out what kind of lovers he's collecting in hotel rooms. It sort of sounds like paycheck, but not really.

Am I the only one who thinks this song is the infamous "MySpace Whore" song?

He met a girl on MySpace and they had a one night stand in a hotel room. She then cheated on him with another guy (hence the Closer reference). The title, the reference to fingers to the keys, and the title are all reference to internet culture/relationships.

Fall Out Boy – Short, Fast, and Loud Lyrics 14 years ago
"the 'good god i wish i was tall' line is not literal; neither is the 'how is the weather up there?'"

Haha, yes they are. The song is about shallow girls in general and how the singer has trouble with them because he is short and looks young. Hence the irony of the line, "Go figure, I'm bigger than that."

The song is also a play on the common conception that punk songs are "short, fast, and loud". That approach is why the vocals "don't seem to fit" as noted by the first original poster. Most punk lyrics don't mesh especially well with the fast paced music.
