Keren Ann sings so beautifully and so sadly about Israel / Palestine. This song captures the humanity of the people who are inexorably affected by / part of / entangled with the conflict. It makes me reflect on how none of them can change what is happening. All of this was set in motion by others a long time ago. It seems to me a very personal and honest song. I always come back to it. |

To me, this song is about the search for real connection amidst a sea of superficial relationships which do not satisfy that desire for true human connection. You open yourself up to another person - go walking in their landscape - a risky business to open yourself up in this way. You think you feel a real connection but your heart or ego tells you not to let your guard down. Don’t let them in, don’t be honest, don’t be vulnerable. The siren song of that real connection will lead you to ruin. We’d be a walking disaster. Do not, under any circumstances, expose yourself to the pain of rejection. Keep your guard up. Do not pursue this connection you think you felt. In your quest for real connection, you are green - naive - too naive. |
