Firstly, let's ASSUME the new movie "Rocketman" is accurate - and I think EJ was standing over the screenwriters, so it's reasonable to assume he would have set them on the right path. If so then the movie is about him making the bold move from a "full-blooded city boy, Into a full-blooded city man". It talks about Reggie Dwight reinventing himself. So I think this song is about his apprehension of his passage from boyhood to superstardom:. “I wish I was someone else,” he says early on, and then proceeds to reinvent himself, discarding Reggie Dwight and gradually morphing into Elton John. Bernie was, of course, closely involved, so he would have known about how Elton was putting himself out there, and I think he was writing about how Elton worked through the criticism. Should he just grow a thicker skin? Or answer the crickets, er critics. |
