| ok so personally i think this could easily be an lgbt+ anthem. like all you gotta do is just replace "there is so much love in me" with "im super fucking bi" and it 100% has that meaning. martin said this was the last song he wrote for spirit and he wrote it because he noticed that all the other songs he wrote were really negative, so he wanted to write a more positive song to balance it out. this song is definitely supposed to be slightly political, about things currently being bad politically but still being able to bounce back and counter all the hate in the world with love for your fellow human being. martin also did name the continuing fight for gay & trans rights to be a point of inspiration for him while writing for this album. the lines "you can despise me / demonize me / it satisfies me" i find very relatable as a more unconventional, "unacceptable" gay person (by which i mean im a gender nonconforming weirdo, much like martin himself) in that i revel in how much cishets cant stand my existence and i take pride in how much they hate me, because they dont realize that i really dont care about their standards of normality at all. im sure that martin understands that even better than i do. anyway thats my scalding hot take on this really good track and if you think martin lee gore is a heterosexual im gonna dunk your head in a toilet gn ✌ | |

although it feels strange to have such strong feelings towards a comment left 9 years ago, i have to say that i could not agree less with carinapir. ""our"" martin, as they ever-possessively put it, does not seem to me like the vengeful type, or at least not towards a person who likely didnt deliberately bring him to much harm i think it is much more likely that he is taking the perspective of someone he once loved and the person he refers to as "you" is actually himself. as a songwriter myself, i can attest that writing confessional pieces is much easier when you depersonalize it, when you detach how you feel from yourself and act like those difficult feelings belong to someone other than yourself. i can imagine it would be incredibly difficult to admit that, despite your knowledge that someone is no longer part of your life, you cant seem let go of them and, frankly, you cant even imagine not missing them. spilling all your guts to the world is an indescribably horrifying concept to me and neither you nor i can expect martin to do that, especially if its just for the sake of us being able to understand his lyrics more easily id just like to end this by saying that people really gotta quit assuming martins straight. i mean that doesnt have to do with any of the interpretations of this song specifically but just in general. stop it. its a bad idea also songmeanings dot com user billclinton i hope you know i would lay down my life for you |

ok so i understand that this song comes off as sinister just because the song itself sounds a bit dark, but if you look at the lyrics on their own it seems 100% like a love song. im positive martin wrote it about someone he was in love with. and for the last time, MARTIN wrote this song, not dave. martin was never addicted to heroin. quit saying that shit. quit it "the sweetest perfection / to call my own / the slightest correction / couldnt finely hone". i think the "sweetest perfection" IS his partner. he feels lucky to call them his own and he loves every minute detail of them and knows they could never be replicated. "the sweetest infection / of body and mind". the word "infection" sort of makes it sound like a bad thing but this is a SWEET infection. i think hes saying this person sort of consumes his every thought among other things. hes obsessed with them. "the sweetest injection / of any kind". i think is referring to sex, that he prefers to sleep with this specific person over other people (as "inject" simply means to insert something into something else) "i stop and i stare too much / afraid that i care too much / and i wouldnt dare to touch / for fear that the spell may be broken". i think this is basically him saying that hes worried about coming off as too clingy/needy because hes afraid his partner will turn away from him. "when i need a drug in me / and it bring out the thug in me / feel something tugging me / then i want the real thing not tokens". i think this is sort of an elaboration of the "sweetest injection" line, that when he wants to have sex hed prefer it be with someone he actually loves because doing otherwise would feel shallow (imo, reminiscent of how world full of nothing has an increasingly uneasy sound as the line "though its not love it means something" is repeated) (sidenote i love world full of nothing so much jesus fucking christ) "things youd expect to be / having effect on me / pass undetectedly / but everyone knows what has got me". ignoring that "undetectedly" is not a word, i think this is him saying that he doesnt care about other people trying to woo him because hes so focused on the person he loves. "takes me completely / touches so sweetly / reaches so deeply / i know that nothing can stop me". i think these lines are really sweet. basically just him describing what makes this person so special. in the demo i could hear martin smiling when he sang "touches so sweetly"...... :') "sweetest perfection / an offer was made / an assorted collection / but i wouldnt trade". this is him saying that he can sleep with as many different people as he wants but he prefers this one person over that because he loves them in conclusion im emotional i hope martin gore has a good day today as well as every day that isnt today god bless |

aight so i left a jokey interpretation on the page for nlmda. big deal. i have a legit analysis of this song tho so sit tight (tho i realize the last comment on this page was made nearly 5 years ago...... and the last actual interpretation 9. i do have a habit of arriving fashionably late ;) ) something a lot of people dont know is that, according to one of the entries in daryl bamontes devotional/exotic tour diary, martin gore used to do drag. it says in the entry that he went by the drag name brandy i believe the person he is speaking to is not a separate person - no, not a sex worker or nothing like every single interpretation before mine says (get back to me when yall have an original thought for once) - but rather, he is speaking to his drag persona, brandy. im new to drag myself (im a baby lesbian) but the gist of it is that when you do drag, youre not simply trying to look like a gender other than your own; youre putting on a character. youre being someone else entirely, hence why drag kings and queens have drag names. its an alter ego of sorts. this explains why he might write about brandy as if she were a completely different person altogether: because, in essence, she sort of is it has also come to my attention that the other interpretations of this song claim that he is "in love" with the person he is speaking to. while i do agree that he must care for them a lot (lyrics like "i need you just this way," "they say you never care for me," "but they cant see your appeal"), i dont think his feelings towards them are necessarily romantic in nature. if my interpretation is true, that he is speaking to his drag persona, then his bond with this person runs deeper than any romantic or sexual feelings one person could have for another. brandy is a part of him, literally, and that means he shares her thoughts, feelings, and memories (well, depending on how much he was drinking certain nights i guess). that is an indescribably close bond, so id say hed sure as hell care a lot about her, yknow? i had more written but then i got tired of writing this so i deleted it. anyway this isnt fucking gospel and i absolutely could be wrong about my interpretation but sall good everyone on this website is a dumbass anyway so who cares. anyway martin gore is such an icon and i would kill a man for him. martin gore said gay rights ! |
