Taylor Swift – Is It Over Now? Lyrics 5 months ago
Kinda makes me think back of some times with my ex and the good moments. But also makes me think of those solo moments being just as good. I don't know.

Drake – Laugh Now Cry Later Lyrics 3 years ago
So let me just say that I have always been a fan of Drake. He truly has a song for every feeling. His new hit “Laugh Now Cry Later” took me just two listens to get into. I usually don’t absolutely love a song on the first go. I admit that I gave the lyrics a read through twice to get them straight in my head before I listened to the song. After reading the lyrics through, I thought it was a bit much with all of the “baby” this and “baby” that. I will admit that the video made all of the “baby” usage silly in a fun, flirty way. Drake obviously knows what he is doing, and you can tell he had the whole visual aspect in his head because it played very well on screen.

Though this isn’t as hard hitting as some of Drake’s previous hits, it has a good melody and laid-back feel that still makes you get into it. But a look at the lyrics let us know that Drake knows he is still on top. He is telling us that he has no time for anyone else’s crap. The part about “tired of beefin’ you bums, you can’t even pay me enough to react” is definitely the mood I will carry with me for the rest of 2020. Just completely over all of the negative jerks thank you very much. I also love how Drake calls everyone out with “where do these niggas be at when they say they doin’ all this and all that?”. People want to try to talk crap about Drake, but he really is a step above them. They can’t throw anything that would stick, and he knows it.

The only part that had me kind of bummed was that the verse with Lil Durk was so short. I wanted a bit more honestly. It was so quick and was over before I could really get into it. But other than that, I really enjoyed the song. It’s not as catchy as some of his others, but his screw it all attitude is for sure something we should all take to heart. No, we aren’t living the high life while driving the most ridiculous cars, but the overall attitude of just living your life moment to moment and not worrying about everything until later is very on brand for 2020.

Juice WRLD – Life's a Mess Lyrics 3 years ago
Juice WRLD and Halsey collaborated and released a song on June 6th, 2020. The title of the song, “Life’s A Mess” is a reference to feeling lost without your soulmate and without them, your soul feels like a mess. In the opening verse, Juice WRLD, aka Jared Higgins, talks about a special relationship between you and your soulmate. He also expresses that your soulmate leaves an everlasting mark on your soul.

In the second half of the song, Juice WRLD talks about his life and how it changed when he finally met his soulmate. He says in the song, “Been pretty f*****’ bad, but it’s better now” which explains that he's put the past and pain behind him and has moved on. In the final verse of the song, Halsey talks from the woman's perspective and how she’s glad she crossed paths with her soulmate. She says that she wants to be by her soulmate's side and show him the bright sides of life. In the last couple lines, Halsey says “I’ll put the light in your eyes if I’m allowed to” which means that she is willing to show him happiness and keep his past behind him as they both move on and continue to be happy together.

Jason Derulo – Savage Love Lyrics 3 years ago
On May 11, 2020, Jason Durelo and Jawsh 685 collaborated to release a song titled “Savage Love.” The title of the song is another way of expressing a sour and toxic relationship between two people. The song is based on a relationship where the woman is only with her boyfriend to make her ex-lover jealous. “Savage Love” is a way to say that the love a woman is giving another man is hurtful and negative.

In the first verse of the song, Jason Durelo explains that his life was filled with emptiness before meeting his girlfriend. He emphasizes that he went on with his life thinking he would never find another woman to love again. As he continues to date and be with this woman, he realizes that she is only using him to make her ex-boyfriend jealous. In the last couple lines in the verse he says, “Usually I would never, would never even care” which means he doesn’t care that he is being used and can sense the hurt that his woman's ex-lover brought her. Even while knowing he is being used, he wants to give her everything she deserves and wants to make her feel loved.

Kanye West – Wash Us in the Blood Lyrics 3 years ago
Kanye’s Wash Us In the Blood, is a very strong and powerful song that I truly respect. A lot of celebrities have chosen to remain silent during the Black Lives Matter movement and that is very disappointing. They have such a huge platform that they could utilize to help fight injustice and yet they choose to remain silent. This is not what Kanye choose to do and the normal passion he puts in his music is seen completely throughout these lyrics.

“So I let it fly when I’m in the booth, the devil is liar and I been the truth" is about how many of the news stations and magazines are not telling the whole truth. The people hiding the truth about what is going on in the world are the devil and he is saying that he raps to tell the world the real struggles and truth that the world is facing.

He goes on to ask God to finally come and save the people that are being killed. So much blood has been spilled and it needs to stop. There needs to be someone who comes and intervenes and the intervention would be most helpful from a higher power. It is a song that is full of emotions and will make anyone who listens to it agree that there needs to be a change to improve the world we are living in.

Beyoncé – Black Parade Lyrics 3 years ago
Beyoncé challenged herself to create, in one song, an anthem in recognition of Juneteenth, a celebration of black-owned businesses, and a public appeal to continue Black Lives Matter activism. Unsurprisingly, she knocked it out of the park.

There are many layers to “Black Parade” and so much to praise, but I’d like to focus on one clever thing she does in the lyrics of this important piece. While adding to a rich and historied canon of art and literature that exults black American culture by reconnecting it to its royal African roots, Beyoncé performs two roles in this song, in conversation with one another (which in itself is a trope of traditional storytelling around the world). She embodies both the newcomer to African culture who is learning and growing, and the fully-arrived Motherland, anthropomorphized as an African queen and mirroring Beyoncé’s own matriarchal public image.

Especially in the beginning of the song, several lines suggest someone who is newly arrived to the black empowerment movement and is looking at it through fresh eyes, or at least returning to it after a long absence: she is “going back to the South/Where my roots ain't watered down.” The chorus repeats that she needs to let the “motherland, motherland drip on me.” Initially there is the brief line “my drip is skin deep,” which can have a dual meaning—it is skin color that is her initial link to the motherland, but if it is only “skin deep,” the implication is that she must search for a connection that goes deeper than that. This is supported by the next line, “I can't forget my history is her-story”—we are witnessing someone who is discovering or rediscovering, and must remind herself, of the feminine and the Afrocentric.

Perhaps most surprisingly, this speaker goes on to quote words that at first seem completely opposed to the message of the song: “Being black, maybe that's the reason why they always mad...Been past 'em, I know that's the reason why they all big mad.” (Even these apparently contemptuous lines, however, have some ambiguity, hinting that perhaps there is good reason for black people to be “mad” throughout history.) We are being made aware of outside perspectives on black activism, presumably from people who do not understand systematic oppression or the Black Lives Matter movement. Our initial speaker, then, is not immune to dissenting voices, but is invoking African items, cultural practices and deities to attempt to affirm her black personhood.

We encounter a different identity in the chorus, who signs:
Honey, come around my way, around my hive
Whenever momma says so, momma say
Here I come on my throne, sittin' high
Follow my parade oh, my parade

This voice introduces itself in three short lines as maternal, authoritative, and regal. We can presume that this is the Motherland herself, speaking back to the seeker and inviting her to follow the “parade”—a metaphor for protest marches and, more generally, black solidarity. She again references African and African American history, this time not defensively, but to illustrate connectedness throughout time. Through allusions to bees and hives, Beyoncé connects this commanding voice to her own persona, making her audience the “Beyhive” and by inference, inviting them in the same way. It is a masterful call to action: the song at once empathizes with people who are new to the movement, but also displays the power and inclusion that will come once they join the parade.

XXXTENTACION – Skin Lyrics 3 years ago
It is said that simplicity is the greatest sophistication. This is true not just for music, but to any form of art. Xxxtentacion's "Skin" keeps things basic, but in a way that isn't always for the better.

There's a charm to tracks that are barebones when done right - acoustic ballads are a great example - but Skin is not that type of song. Instead, repeated listens to the ambient synth layers that make up the instrumentals give off a feeling of monotony, and the droning rhythm of the rap vocals do not exactly help.

The song's weaknesses are remedied to some extent by its strengths, though. The slurred, slow-paced rapping of Xxxtentacion paints a picture of someone who feels genuinely dejected, desperate and clinging by the end of their rope. This feeling is amplified by the song's poignant lyrics. Lines like "I'll cut my wrist till' my heartbeat is silent" and "shots in her body till' she is a stump" have the power to make you stop in your tracks for their heavy emotional impact, although the explicit, gory theme is not for everyone. Even if "Skin" is not for the faint of heart, the song will still make the heart beat faster for some hip hop junkies out there.

Lady GaGa – Sour Candy Lyrics 3 years ago
Before the unveiling of Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album, Chromatica, she wowed fans by releasing a sugary-sweet hit called Sour Candy. This collaboration with K Pop super group, Blackpink, discusses the importance of being graceful with yourself and accepting your past. This track plays with the idea that despite hardships, poor choices and past trauma, the walls we build up around ourselves are meant to be broken down by the right people. Allowing love back in, even when you don’t feel like you love yourself, was something that Gaga discussed in a recent interview with Apple Music. This idea is one that many can relate to, as heartache and hardship are a normal part of life.

Interestingly enough, this electronic club track provides insight into some pretty heavy concepts, such as the idea that females need to be sweet. Many people perceive that women should be approachable and presentable, and this song is an anthem that shouts, “love me for who I am, damage and all, or leave”. Lady Gaga has been very open about her struggles with trauma, self-harm and mental health. Her ability to create a song that catches your attention, not only with the captivating beat, but with powerful lyrics, is unsurpassed.

The idea of succumbing to your damage and being ashamed of who you are is stomped out with lyrics such as, “I might be messed up, but I know what's up, You want a real taste, at least I'm not a fake.” Gaga provides an empowering hook that speaks to the idea of vulnerability and sharing our imperfections, instead of putting up a fake front to the world. This song is another testament to Gaga’s ability to share an incredible message, all while providing us with a dance track that will surely be on repeat for the summer.

Halsey – You Should Be Sad Lyrics 4 years ago
At its opening, I was immediately thrown off by this song. “You Should Be Sad” by
Halsey is unlike any of her other pieces, as the beat and tone of voice is a pop/
country style music combination. While listening, I was completely turned off by
this style switch; I often find that when artists try to make a shift like this, it
interrupts the entire tone of the album. However, after a bit of research, I found
that Halsey gave reasoning for the country angle on this song specifically, writing
on Twitter that “The most petty and heartbreaking songs all come from
country.” [1]

Re-listening to the track with Halseyʼs perception in mind, the track becomes an
almost humorous yet deeply emotional dig at her ex. Halsey repeatedly sings “I
feel so sad” before ending the song with “You should be sad. You should be.” I
interpret this as Halsey trying to push away the sadness that this guy left her with
and make him experience that same pain. Petty and heartbreaking, indeed.

Pearl Jam – Dance of the Clairvoyants Lyrics 4 years ago
Dance Of The Clairvoyants by Pearl Jam is the first single off of their upcoming album Gigaton. Dance Of The Clairvoyants was an interesting listen for me because of the new direction the band goes in. From the synths and repetitive drums to Eddie Vedder's dreamy vocals. It was a wakeup call that the band that released Ten all those years ago is, for better or for worse, gone. As sad as that may sound, the band's new direction may be refreshing.

It starts off and is immediately reminiscent of the synth-pop band Hot Chip (not something you would expect from Pearl Jam.) From the opening lyrics, the assumed meaning of the song is established. Dreaming about a new future and change, as opposed to the past and present that is repetitive and dull (symbolizing their need to go in a new direction.) The choruses spell out the meaning of the song a lot better than the confusing lyrics that make up most of the song.

A personal highlight of the song is when Vedder occasionally sings in his vintage guttural style, which I take as being little tidbits of the past Pearl Jam. As I've listened to the song on repeat it has grown on me. But it's grown in a way that makes me want to sway my head, and that symbolizes the band's new direction. Because the instrumentals don't make you want to jump up and down or mosh, but instead you want to sway your head. This may have seemed negative but I understand that Pearl Jam has grown tired of doing what they've been doing for 30 years now and I totally support this new direction and am excited to see how it goes.

Halsey – Alanis’ Interlude Lyrics 4 years ago
Halsey’s “Alanis’ Interlude” is a rhythmic little piece about not getting what you want romantically. The lyrics “All these beautiful laughs and beautiful thighs they always keep me up at night But I can’t change my appetite,” sets us up to learn about the artist’s desire to be with a woman. This is a desire that can only be realized in private and not publicly as the song goes on to state “he and she is her and her and he are loved And I have never felt the difference”. This leads us to ask why would the artist need to change her appetite? Well it’s because even today it’s more commonplace for a woman to be with a man. Therefore “her and he are loved”, indicating that if the relationship were her and she it would not be acceptable.

Then we have the artist comparing herself to the kind of man that the woman that she wants is currently with. This is unveiled in the lyrics “your pussy is a wonderland and I could be a better man..”. The artist is a woman, but if she were a man, or if she adopted the role in the romantic relationship that the man currently has, she would be better than him. The artist is a secret lover of the girl that she wants to be with openly. This is evidenced in the lines “and my girl, she always wore a skirt in the classroom Eating my dessert in the bathroom Can’t get caught so we stiller than a statue Bad news, think I’ll probably die before I have you”.

The artist laments the labels of he and her being the go-to for couple descriptors. The labels are imposing and confusing to her, thus “a child in all these labels.” Children are known for their innocence and unconditional love. Our artist compares her own feelings for her secret lover to those feelings that children often personify. Our artist hints at the depth of her secrecy in the line “bit my nails down so they wouldn’t scratch”. If she were to leave marks of any kind on the body of her lover during intercourse, then the man would discover their relationship. This is a personal tale about growing up on the outside and loving someone while not being able to show it.

Eminem – Darkness Lyrics 4 years ago
Unpacking the meanings behind the words of Eminem’s new song Darkness would take hours. Every word seems to have a meaning, as each moment passes, he builds up the story little by little to finally call attention to the number of shootings that take place in the United States.

To me the most important part of the song that, moment that he really brings the story home, is the third verse:

Finger on the trigger, but I'm a licensed owner
With no prior convictions, so loss, the sky's the limit
So my supplies infinite, strapped like I'm a soldier

He has spent the entire song talking about how high and drunk the gunman is, creating these parallels between himself and this shooter and then brings it home: the next shooter could be anyone. The guns the Las Vegas shooter owned he owned legally, he had no prior convictions, no mental health issued that limited his right to bear arms.

Anybody could end up in that dark place where they just decide that the sky’s the limit. The video that accompanies this song asks the question: “When will this end? When enough people care”. He then reminds everyone to register to vote. So, let me finish this off reminding you, no matter where you stand on these issues, where you stand on the political spectrum, your voice is important, register to vote.

Justin Bieber – Yummy Lyrics 4 years ago
Even though the song has received a lot of mixed reviews, this is what I think:
For an Artiste who has songs topping the charts, Yummy seems a little bit under the belt.

It seems to be the lyrics actually, not as catchy as I anticipated. It lacks the kind of appeal you expect once you hear the name "Justin Bieber". I prefer to listen to songs over and over so as to get a full grasp of what's actually on.

As I listened again, I increasingly found the word "yummy" unattractive. The fact that it was repeated in the chorus just makes it worse. If Justin was trying to reach on to the ladies on this one, which I think is the deal, he didn't make a great word pick.

Even though the song is doing pretty good on the charts, making the second spot in barely 2 weeks of release, it still has not satisfied the Hunger Justin has created in me while on his Solo vacation. This is not the worst song ever heard but it isn't on the A list either. It is a song that will rake massive online listens, but I think it is one that won't be etched on our memories for too long.

Calvin Harris – Found You Lyrics 5 years ago
Calvin Harris has one of the most distinct voices in pop music. When I first heard this song, I immediately turned it up to the point where my whole car was shaking because the bass in this song is so strong. This song if the perfect song to get up and dance too, you can listen to it on your way to work, at a party, in the club, the gym, anywhere. It will definitely get your adrenaline pumping. Good vibes all around from Calvin Harris with this hit. I haven’t heard much from Benny Blanco, truthfully I don’t even know who he is but his music producing and song writing skills did not disappoint me in this song.

Usually when we listen to songs, it’s first instinct to listen to the lyrics, but with this song it’s all about the beat. The beat is what makes this song so catchy and fun. The lyrics are simple and repetitive, which makes it easy to remember, which makes singling along much easier since we don’t have to remember many lyrics. The title of the song is “Found you” and it just so happens that the majority of the lyrics of the song are “I found you”. So, I think I can make an educated guess that this song is about Calvin Harris finding someone, probably a girl, that makes him happy. Just a guess though, could be wrong.

Halsey – Without Me Lyrics 5 years ago
It feels like every song we get from Halsey is just a hit. This one is especially one of my favorite Halsey songs because it’s her first song since officially splitting from G-Eazy and it couldn’t be more obvious that this song his about him. Only way to get over an ex is to release a song that’s topping the charts, right? If you pay close attention to the lyrics you notice that she actually exposes G-Eazy pretty hard. She sings “Found you when your heart was broke – I filled your cup until it overflowed” explaining that she did too much for G-Eazy. The song is filled with a bunch of tiny jabs at him. The chorus is what really hits the ball out of the park, when she says “Tell me, how’s it feel, sittin up there? Feeling so high, but too far away to hold me, you know I’m the one who put you up there…” Basically, she’s saying that she’s the reason G-Eazy is where he is today. But it gets better, the hook line and sinker of the whole song is when she blurts out ‘thinking you could live without me”. Basically, G-Eazy, she’s telling you that you can’t live without her, and it’s funny if you think you can.

See everyone, celebrities are just like us, they get dumped, and they get upset, and they find a way to get over it. Ladies, whether you got dumped or you were the one who did the dumping, you and Halsey are in the same boat. This song is your anthem and will help you get back on top.

Ellie Goulding – Close To Me Lyrics 5 years ago
The upbeat rhythm of this song and the catchy lyrics makes it virtually impossible to not sing along to it. Ellie Goulding, although seems to always be flying under the radar, never disappoints when she releases a song. Not going to lie, this is the type of song I dance around in my room to playing the meanest air guitar ever. We all do it, it’s okay. We can always count on Diplo to create the most electric beat, Ellie Goulding to provide the vocals of an angel, and Swae Lee to take the song to the next level with his creative lyrics and his singing voice that he’s breaking into. This song is giving me some rap-pop vibes that I need more of.

The song seems to be about both Ellie’s and Swae Lee’s relationship with their significant others and how their relationships are so wild and free. The two singers paint a picture of a free-spirited lifestyle and loving someone who’s just as wild and free as they are. Ellie sings ‘I don’t wanna be somebody without your body close to me. And if it wasn’t you, I wouldn’t want anybody close to me, cause I’m an animal, animal, like you.” Basically saying that her significant other fuels her kindred spirit, because her partner is also a kindred spirit. Some may think that’s a recipe for disaster, but it seems to be going just fine for Ellie Goulding. This song is definitely one of my favorites on the charts right now.

Imagine Dragons – Natural Lyrics 5 years ago
Have you ever heard a song and fell in love with someone’s voice? Yeah, that’s what happened to me here. I love how this song has such a catchy tune and when the beat drops – forget about it – it’s almost impossible to sit still and not sing along. What I love so much about this song is that it shows off the pure vocals and talent from lead-singer Dan Reynolds. I like how throughout the song his voice really fluctuates, the beginning of the song is him singing very naturally and as the chorus builds you can really hear the emotion grow in his voice and then the chorus crushes it and his voice is amazing.

When you first listen to this song, you don’t really pay much attention to the lyrics because the sound itself is very catchy but when you actually pay attention to the lyrics you realize that this song actually has a very strong meaning. Part of the chorus is “A beating heart so stone, you gotta be so cold to make it in this world. Yeah, you’re a natural.” To me, this song stands for the fact that we live in such a dog-eat-dog world and to survive and make it in this world you have to be a little stone cold. Life throws a lot of crazy things at us that we don’t necessarily expect so to be able to build a thick skin in this world is important. We can only guess that Dan Reynolds has gone through a lot of hardships in his life and this song is a reflection on how he feels about the world.

Post Malone – Sunflower Lyrics 5 years ago
Who knew Swae Lee could sing like this!? I mean, I always knew he was a talented rapper but now that he is breaking out of his shell and singing more I am so impressed. I’m loving this collaboration between Post Malone and Swae Lee and I need them to work together more because every time they do, they produce pure gold. This song overall just has the best vibe, it’s fun, it has a catchy beat, and it’s so lighthearted. It’s just a feel good song that you want to sing along to. While the name of the song is sunflower, we all know this song has nothing to do with a flower, it’s about a girl. A mystery girl at that. A girl who is persistent in finding love even if she’s not shown the affection that she deserves. This song begs the question – who are these boys singing about? Do either one of these guys have a secret relationship that we don’t know about?

Also, can we not ignore the fact that this song is for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, in theaters December 14. First of all, who isn’t a fan of the Spiderman movies. Secondly, who isn’t a fan of Post Malone? This fun, whimsical song will be perfect in Spiderman and I can’t wait to how the song fits into the movie.

Ariana Grande – Thank U, Next Lyrics 5 years ago
No girl, thank u for this song! Congrats to Ariana Grande for releasing a pop song that is basically the anthem for girls who have been in their fair share of failed relationships! Ariana has been in the public eye a lot lately and honestly, I think the world has been waiting for her to make some kind of statement since the death of Mac Miller and since she broke off her engagement to Pete Davidson. In the song, she says that her ex’s taught her love, patience, and pain and that she turned out amazing because of it. Which honestly is a message I love. This song is setting a great example to a lot of girls out there that it’s important to love yourself, and be in a relationship with yourself, and that you don’t need a man to be amazing.

I especially love how relatable this song is. Usually, girls tend to bash and hate their ex boyfriends for hurting them but Ariana sends the message that she’s actually thankful for her ex because of how she turned out. Her releasing this song is the best clap back that she could have given to her haters out there that even though she’s been through hell, she’s still on top. Ariana Grande turns lemons into lemonade. I applaud her for her maturity and for her using her voice in an inspirational way.

Lady GaGa – Shallow Lyrics 5 years ago
To me, “Shallow” represents the emptiness that we all feel when we know we aren’t living our lives to their full potential. Everyone feels lost to some degree or has felt lost to some degree at some point in time. That lost feeling can perpetuate and take on a life of its own in the form of a truly disoriented and dissatisfied lifestyle. The shallow is our “comfort” zone. It is that stagnant place that we feel has complete and total control over us. We spend years searching and praying for ways to break free from it, but we never feel like breaking free is truly possible.

We may not know exactly what it is we are searching for, but we know that the way we continue to live is not what is meant for us. “Shallow” is about having the courage to take the jump, that blind leap of faith towards our true destinies. We may have no idea what our true destinies are or what is waiting for us on the other side, but unless we jump we will never know. Our true potential will never be realized, and our lives will be a waste.

The deep end is the place we reach when we take the necessary leap towards living life as the gift that it is. It is a blissful abyss where anything is possible. We have freed ourselves and have given ourselves the chance to be who we wanted to be all along. We are making room for our dreams to come true, whatever they may be, for the first time in our lives. We can’t make room for what is meant for us until we escape the shallows of routine and unhappiness. Once we do escape, we realize that we had the control to all along. The shallow truly never had a hold of us and our peace was just on the other side of a fine line that was always right in front of our faces. In the deep end, there is no looking back.

I have been living in the shallows for years. This song and its message helped push me off the edge into the unknown where my destiny is waiting for me. I am swimming in the deep end now, and I have finally broken free from the lifeless routine that drained me of passion for way too long. I have no idea what is ahead of me, but I took the leap and I have never felt this free in my entire life. “Shallow” helped give me that push and for that I am forever grateful.
