Layne wrote about religion a lot but I think in this case John Paul's right.

Religion is used as a metaphor here for society

Alice in Chains – No Excuses Lyrics 4 years ago
I swear to god Chains touch on everything feeling throughout their years.

This song is about friendship. Clearly Jerry to Layne of course maybe some mention of drugs and drug use but this is one friends message to another.

No one cares but I got a friend going though some shit mentally. Basically pushed everyone away and we're watching him fall apart on social media. We reach out he ignores can't help someone who won't be helped. I pray nothing drastic happens. Very relatable tune

@[Tainted703:33176] weak will refers to sexual appetite. He/has a weak will always looking for sex and attention. His weak will won't help heal her heart from perhaps the break up that just happened

Alice in Chains – Don't Follow Lyrics 4 years ago
@[swa528:33104] I agree it's about suicide I think the song splits itself in two. Jerry's part and Layne's. Jerry's part is 100% to a tee what u said it's a suicide note. I think Layne's part is the man, after "leaving" home (perhaps leaving home to a new city/country) is now reflecting back a year or years after this attempted suicide or after leaving and wanting to go home "Take me home!"

I like to see some positives within I could be wrong the beauty of music is the purpose is to interpret it they way we want.

I love this song man, discovered chains during a very dark period of my life which in ways still am recovering from. this song was very relatable at the time and still holds up now and I feel Layne's part is meant to be more of a positive side to the story being told in this song

Mad Season – X-ray Mind Lyrics 5 years ago
I can definitely see the media being a big part of what this song is about. However I see two stories here.

The beginning he's talking about himself.

"Do the laughs die when, one such as I run. And allow myself. Time for true own needs"

I think he thinks people make a joke of him or like to make fun of his drug habits and he runs from those comments and takes time to himself doing what he wants to do.

"When convincing me that you're on my team. May not lie to me but not mentioning"

People maybe loved one tell him their on "his side" but really they're telling him lies or not telling him anything at all. Maybe for their own self gain or because he can't handle the truth. Either way he just wants to be kept in the loop.

"So sit back and have an hysterical laughter at tiny holes but and trade men's souls"

I think this is were the media starts to come into play. The sit back and have an hysterical laugh part, I can see as being literally anyone who sit back and watch his life from their couches they laugh at his drug use (Heroin) hence laugh at tiny holes. And buy and trade men's souls I think we can all agree is about record labels basically claiming the rights to these band members and using them to squeeze out all their creative juices.

The first course is about himself

"X ray mind reads plenty. Worth no more than pennies"

He can see through what people are saying and he can see everyone's true intentions. They may say one thing just to get another thing. He's worth no more than pennies so why is everyone so fixated on him?

And the second part of this song is the media.

"See the more I think I'm afraid to blink I don't move an inch slowly draining me"

He's clearly afraid if he speaks up to the record companies they'll make sure he'll be forgotten but the more he lets it build up the more it eats away at him.

"Hire a spy and bug me"
He can't be left alone everyone wants a piece of him at any given time whenever he's out there's people whenever he's home theirs people.

"Pimp your friends for money"
Record companies make you believe you're their friend to come work for them but once you're signed they'll use you for anything if it means they make some cash for it.

"Rich and growing sicker"
record companies keep getting rich and demand more and more from you because they're money hungry

"Sell the dead one quicker"
Once you're dead it's easier to make money off you. Kurt Cobain is the perfect example. In utero wasn't doing well. then he killed himself the album skyrocketed up the charts. Same with really any musician.

Layne was really good at having the message right there in front of you. No play on words it's just blunt and brutally honest one of the biggest reason why he's one of my favorite musicians ever

Alice in Chains – Real Thing Lyrics 5 years ago
I can see this song being about drugs. Especially white. But they do mention heroin at some points "made the blade my new toy"

But its for sure a song leaned towards coke more then heroin. "Going down the steps on the white line" he's got leanos lined up and he keeps snorting them back.

The rehab part is pretty self explanatory. Clearly rehab didn't work like everyone says it does and he's back to borrowing money from people and he's back to being high.

Alice in Chains – Confusion Lyrics 5 years ago
its defs a love song. I dont know who can relate but I find that every "addict" has that one chick who sticks around and cares for you. Why does she stick around? cause she care/loves you but at the time all you want is your next fix you never realize it till much later often when its too late.

Staley or Cantrell (can't remember who) said in an interview AIC write about what they know. thats why their music isn't very political they don't care or know about politics. however they knew drugs and life as an addict so thats what they wrote about.

Genius band that never stepped out of line and stuck to the roots glad theyre still going strong today
