Gentle Giant – Plain Truth Lyrics 2 months ago
To me, this song seems to be saying that people would do well not to overthink life as a whole.

For example, the line
"Why do you question, when there's no answer told?"

seems to be pointing out that the question
"What is the [universal, objective] purpose of life?"

can't possibly have an answer, so there's no point in asking it.

We assume that there must be some grandiose purpose or meaning explaining why we are on Earth, and how we ought to spend our time. In fact, there is no such overarching meaning or purpose.

Hence:
"Don't look for something.
Plain truth is nothing -
nothing but the plain truth."

i.e. It is plainly apparent that there is no objective "purpose of life", so there is no point in asking these meaningless questions.

"All the white horses are still in bed."\r\n\r\nI was thinking of the white horses as symbolizing the stereotypical prince on a white horse coming to the rescue, so I was thinking that maybe her father is telling her that she can\'t rely on waiting for someone else coming to her rescue - she needs to be able to fend for herself and be independent.

"She sleeps in a chair"\n"She waits in the air",\n\nMaybe she\'s on a plane? A plane is one of few places where you\'d be likely to sleep in a chair - and pretty much the only place where you would be able to wait in the air.

@[Aniland:39067] But doesn't Supper's Ready have religious themes woven into it? Reading the lyrics to "Never Let Go", it seems like just an atheist song to me, so I'm not sure it would really fit with Supper's Ready.

Rush – Sweet Miracle Lyrics 9 months ago
Consider the following:
There is many a song which argues for the existence of a god from a personal perspective, by way of the lyricist making a case that some miracle has affected their life, and that this supposed miracle proves or evidences their god's existence.

Peart had experienced severe tragedy relatively recently before writing these lyrics (his daughter and then his wife died less than a year apart from each other). In light of Peart's recent tragic experiences, this song could perhaps be considered a rebuttal of those songs in which the lyricist states (or tries to imply) that their experience of a 'miracle' proves or evidences their god's existence (as I described above).

So what I'm trying to say is that, if the occurence of an amazing event in a person's life is to be considered a satisfactory reason for that person to believe in the existence of a good god, then we ought to at least try to be consistent, and therefore to wonder what conclusions should be drawn from terrible and unbelievable tragedy and suffering - what could perhaps be described as an 'anti-miracle'. Should we conclude, then, that god controls both 'miracles' and 'anti-miracles' - or should we instead conclude that unexpected occurences will naturally happen from time to time, and no god is required to explain them?

Genesis – It's Gonna Get Better Lyrics 11 months ago
I only realized relatively recently, but the composition of this song is actually pretty weird - it's mostly in 12/4 time signature, and the chords are pretty strange as well, because there are so many different major chords played in the chord progressions (classic Tony Banks style), implying that the key keeps changing back and forth throughout the verses and chorus. The fact there are so many different major chords played in succession is part of what makes it so recognizable as being written by Genesis.

I upvoted your comment because of your reminding everyone of the suffering constantly going on in the world, out of our direct line of sight. I am myself an atheist, so, of course, I don't agree with everything you put there, but I think your section about how much suffering there is in the world, which is out of our own line of sight, was a powerful message, and something which everyone with any empathy ought to keep in mind, to make them more inclined to help those who need it.

@[The7thSon:35386] Did your story have a happy ending? Sorry if I'm being nosy; it's just strange sometimes to come across a comment from over 10 years ago - kind of like a window into the past I guess. But anyway, no pressure to answer my question - obviously it's up to you - you can do what you like, to reference another Boston song.

Going by the other comments, it's probably nothing to do with the intended meaning of the song, but there's a lake in Thailand called 'Sun Moon Lake', which is what reminded me of the song, and why I looked up the meaning.

I'm surprised no-one else thought of a ghost when looking at this song! I think the lyrics could easily be about a ghost, although Ian Anderson has said before that he wants his lyrics to be interpreted in different ways by different people, so maybe it's about a ghost, and also unrequited love, depending on how you look at it.
