Deftones – Rosemary Lyrics | 1 year ago |
@[ZenDiablo:45547] I know this is a very old comment but I interpret the hectic part of the instrumental as going through the "entry to other planes" and they discover a place of peace where it is just them. |
Mogwai – Cody Lyrics | 2 years ago |
It sounds to me like this song is about a guy who is depressed and reminiscing about times past. He looks for any sign telling him things will get better but he just can\'t see it. He has nothing to look forward to, nothing to strive for and he wonders if anyone would notice if he just ceased to exist. He feels like he has no impact on the world around him and therefore, would make not impact on his exit from it. No one should have to feel this way.. |

@[EternalTearsOfSorrow:40428] \r\nI agree, though I would add that he add that "all that we have is just slipping away" which tells me he feels like the ideals we once held are now lost to us. We\'ve moved beyond our moral compass into something he doesn\'t recognize anymore. |

@[cutewhensedated:40324] The Karens come out of the woodwork for this song. lol \r\nApparently, a guy can\'t sing about unrequited love without being misogynistic (which most people who say, don\'t actually understand the meaning of). |

Kaleo – All the Pretty Girls Lyrics | 2 years ago |
This song, to me, is about a lonely guy who has a lot of love to give but no girl gives him a chance because there are hotter, taller, wealthier guys. He watches as his love interests are swept off their feet by other "Samuels" while he has no one to go through life with. He does not feel like life is worth living alone so he\'d rather just lay down and die as he gives up hope of finding someone to love him and who lets him give all that love he has. |

Flora Cash – You’re Somebody Else Lyrics | 2 years ago |
To me, this song feels like your older self talking to your younger self and your younger self talking back.. The older you sees what you are and what you\'ll become. You long for the days when you saw yourself as better than you are now. The days of innocence are gone and you\'re left with a shell of your former self. Looking at yourself from your old perspective you\'re scared of what you see and what you hear from this person. It doesn\'t feel like you, or at least not who you thought you were.. You\'re disappointed and you feel hopeless to change what you now are.. Or maybe always were.. |
Saosin – You're Not Alone Lyrics | 2 years ago |
Just wanted to say it's 2021 and I'm still shedding tears when I hear this song.. I have had suicidal thoughts.. so have loved ones.. I'm lucky that I have them though, we took turns dragging each other through the dark times and every time, there has been light on the other side of it. If you are suffering, just know that it is temporary and you are NOT alone. Talk about it. Don't suffer alone. <3 |

Tool – Sober Lyrics | 3 years ago |
I believe there was an interview in which the band says this song is tied to the use of drugs for artistic creativity. However, I draw another parallel and it is my whole reason for posting a comment. In the song, there is a lot of mention of the past and how it haunts him but the "I want what I want" line repeated at the end sounds like he also misses what he once had. He seems to be in a perpetual state of self-hatred and depression. Depression because he lost what he cared for in life and self-hatred because he can't let it go and he let himself drag others down with him. It's for this reason that I think he repeats "I want what I want" so much at the end both out of desperation because of the loss, but also out of frustration at his inability to move on and not act selfishly. |
Silversun Pickups – Straw Man Lyrics | 3 years ago |
Well, I'm not sure of the intended meaning of the song, but I am going through something lately that makes me relate this song to a girl. That is probably what influences the way I take it, but my take is that this guy was either in a relationship with this girl or had strong feelings that he made known to her (like in my case) and she chose someone else after he thought he stood a chance with her. She is happy with this new guy meanwhile the one who is hurt is pretending to be happy for her until he can't fake it anymore and the sarcasm starts to show. He thought he was a much better choice and could have loved her much more some he sees this other guy as the "straw man" because he's just a placeholder for who should be there and he is angry because that seems to be enough for her. So she ends up with the guy she thinks is better but who won't love her as much as the singer could and the singer gets to end up alone.. It's especially hard for me because I will always have her around, since she is close to my family.. and only getting closer.. I have to see them together and intimate in the way I should be with her. Instead I get to stay alone and let my affection rot. |
Silversun Pickups – Widow’s Weeds Lyrics | 3 years ago |
In keeping with the theme for the album, I think this song is about being okay with your world changing and having it change you. Stop holding on so tight and grow, because life is fluid; it keeps moving and so should you. |
Silversun Pickups – Bag of Bones Lyrics | 3 years ago |
When you lose your passion and don't know why you do it all anymore, your mind goes to a dark place. You can start to feel like just a bag of bones and nothing you do has any meaning. Nothing makes you feel like there's any meaning to it all. |
Silversun Pickups – Substitution Lyrics | 3 years ago |
We are all our own worst enemy. Our greatest critics. I think this song is telling us to stop being so hard on ourselves and just love who we are. Don't let anyone tell you to change for them, and don't let your chaotic thoughts rule your life. There is always a way forward, don't let your thoughts or what anyone says hold you back from taking a hold of your own life. You don't wanna miss your opportunities in life because you held yourself back. |
Silversun Pickups – Three Seed Lyrics | 3 years ago |
This song is referring to the father of Tanya Hayden (Charlie Hayden), who plays the cello for Silversun Pickups. She is one of 3 triplet daughters from Charlie Hayden's seed. Hence "three came from one little seed." Charlie Hayden died at the age of 76 (decently old but probably would have had a good few years to go if it weren't for his bad liver). He died of complications from the Polio he used to have as well as liver disease. Probably having more to do with liver disease, hence all the lines about falling into old habits and this little gem right here: "I can see the bottle on the ground. We turned the corner safe and sound. No thought of him as it was done, a clean execution." There is a hint of guilt here maybe because they feel responsible for his drinking problem or at least not being able to get him to stop. They figured as long as he was safe and sound, no harm done. Only, there was harm done and he finally paid with his life. The lines about the sums not adding up at all make me think they missed the signs that would have clued them into the fact that he never recovered from his drinking problem. |

Silversun Pickups – Lazy Eye Lyrics | 3 years ago |
I've been waiting I've been waiting for this moment all my life But it's not quite right And this 'real' It's impossible if possible At who's blind word So clear but so unheard I've been waiting I've been waiting for this silence all night long It's just a matter of time To appear sad With the same old decent lazy eye Fixed to rest on you Aim free and so untrue Everyone's so intimately rearranged Everyone's so focused clearly with such shine Everyone's so intimately rearranged Everyone's so focused clearly with such shine Lost and loaded Still the same old decent lazy eye Straight through your gaze That's why I said I relate I said we relate It's so fun to relate It's the room, the sun, and the sky The room, the sun, and the sky I've been waiting I've been waiting for this moment I have been in love with this song for a very long time now and never heard anyone's opinion of the meaning of it line up with mine so I thought I would get mine out there. He's been waiting to feel close with a certain person all his life and he thinks he might have found her, but something doesn't feel quite right. Still, it feels good to be in love so he ignores the feeling. The second verse is about him getting advice from friends and/or family and trying to see if anyone else sees the love budding between them. They caution him and he decides not to hear it. The third verse is where he finally gets a moment alone with her or with his own thoughts. I'm not quite sure which. He feels confident that she is into him and it's only a matter of time before she tells him. The fourth verse, about the lazy eye is him trying to use his peripheral vision to look at her because he is afraid to confront her about his feelings or get caught checking her out. He appears sad because he can't express himself. To me it seems like the next verse is him noticing how everyone admires her as he does. Next verse seems to be about how he feels he relates to her on everything and they are perfect for each other, only he doesn't realize he is faking who he is and convincing himself that they relate. In the end he reiterates the whole reason he lies to himself this way: he has been waiting for true love a long time and he wants so badly for this to finally be it. |
Say Anything – She Won't Follow You Lyrics | 4 years ago |
Since it's been a decade and no one has mentioned a meaning, allow me to give my best shot. The guy sees a lot of lies in the world and his opinion is often the unpopular one, as he sees through the lies that everyone buys into. One day, he meets a girl who also sees through those lies and he's in love with her because she can see like he can. The liars of the world won't corrupt this one, this one is his. |
Chris Isaak – You Owe Me Some Kind Of Love Lyrics | 4 years ago |
@[kierra:31906] Well if she made a commitment and they laid the ground rules and she ignored them then she isn't free of the consequences (being called out on it). He gave her everything and she decided she can just cancel whatever agreement they had. Even if she just led him on, his emotions are not some toy for her to play with. I think girls let themselves off too easy by just saying "oh he's just being creepy." No. You toyed with his goddamn emotions. He gets to feel however he wants because of it and you are free to make your choices but there will always be the consequence of being called out on it. |

Darius Rucker – Wagon Wheel Lyrics | 4 years ago |
No one has talked about the meaning of the song yet, so allow me to give my interpretation. He is making a road trip to see the one who he's falling in love with. Part of this trip is to get away from his old life and start over with someone who sees him for who he wants to be. Not for who he's been. She's not just his love, she is his new beginning and he's finally free. |
Meg Myers – After You Lyrics | 4 years ago |
It's obvious what this song is about - new-found love and infatuation. This is someone she feels like she can be her complete self with, and she doesn't seem to be used to that.. She was scared to be vulnerable but when she did, she realized this is what she really wanted. When she opened up, she fell for this person almost immediately. I am a guy experiencing this with a girl who I've known for 4 years now, but only now are we actually hanging out and getting to know the depths that exist in one another. Needless to say it hits me close to home, and I wish I could be this open with her but she's been hurt recently and I don't want to scare her with how real this feels to me. I plan to wait on her to heal before making a move, but I can't hold back how I feel. It's raw emotion that will not be controlled and it longs to be realized and used for a commitment that nothing on this Earth could kill. |
Snow Patrol – Fallen Empires Lyrics | 4 years ago |
This song seems to be about a sexual relationship that doesn't feel right to the guy, but he can't say no. He will keep going back to it because it gives him a high, but he knows he'll regret it after. As he always does. Essentially, it's like sex is his drug. |

Train – Meet Virginia Lyrics | 4 years ago |
It's about a woman struggling with her self-image. She is not confident but he sees her beauty despite what she thinks of herself and only wants her to see it too. He is there because to him, she's the most beautiful woman he's seen and he'll do whatever it takes to be there for her until she sees what he sees. (Just my take) |
Seether – Words as Weapons Lyrics | 4 years ago |
My thoughts: He was hurt by someone he cared about, who abused him, mostly verbally. This made him realize just how powerful words can be. He is moving on from them and instead of bringing people down, he wants to use words for their power to do good. He will take his experience and build people up instead of breaking them down like was done to him. |
Coheed and Cambria – Welcome Home Lyrics | 4 years ago |
@[Anesther:31596] It does sound like "letter' but I think it is letter as in blood letter. In the old days, they would cure ailments by "blood letting" and getting rid of the sickness that way. Jesus played letter by giving his blood to cure the ailment that is sin. |
Fink – Warm Shadow Lyrics | 4 years ago |
I think this is about a guy who senses that his lover is keeping something from him, but he doesn't wanna push for answers because he wants to stay naive. He has plausible deniability as long as the truth doesn't come out, but he's increasingly afraid that his relationship is gonna fall apart because the truth looms and he knows it's something he won't be able to forgive. He'd do anything to stay in tonight and not let another chapter begin, one without her. He just wants his fairy tale to stay intact. |
Red – Impostor Lyrics | 4 years ago |
Sounds to me like this guy created a whole new self image to hide the parts of him that he cannot escape but is disgusted of. He's seeing his lies and new mask start to crumble and he's coming to grips with the truth he had tried to hide. Now he has to face it and it seems like an impossible task. He can't accept that this is really him, so he cannot solve the problem. |
Amber Run – I Found Lyrics | 4 years ago |
Seems to me like someone who was hurt in a past relationship, telling that person that they don't fully regret what happened. They learned from it and they wouldn't change that, but they're done with this person. They found love unexpectedly afterward and the person they left still wants to be with them but they know that all the "sense" you can talk won't change the facts. That person was bad for them. |
Poets Of The Fall – Carnival of Rust Lyrics | 4 years ago |
To me, it sounds like a man who is feeling guilty for only calling out to God when he is in need. He asks for help but never gives anything in return and always goes back to living for himself. In desperation he asks God not to abandon him completely when his world is burning. Finally, he wants to be the man God wants him to be but he's afraid it's too late. |
Porcupine Tree – Trains Lyrics | 4 years ago |
His lover arrives in town for the summer and it's a summer he'll never forget. It's a train that delivers his "angel" to him and the only reason a crash to the earth is mentioned is because of that saying "did it hurt when you fell from heaven?" It's just him playing on the angel part a little more. Clever. The torn country side and radiant blur is saying she can't help but affect the world around her and lighten up the place. She is so radiant. At the end of the day, at evening, he's dying of love because the day is over and he has to say goodbye until next time. There will be a next time, though, so it's okay. |
Thrice – My Soul Lyrics | 4 years ago |
I think this song is about finding a new love or relationship of any kind and he is afraid or apprehensive of showing all that he is. He wants to be vulnerable with this person, but he is afraid she won't feel what he does or that she'll see who he is and run. At the same time, he can't help but wonder if it's worth it anyway, for something real to begin. |
Explosions in the Sky – First Breath After Coma Lyrics | 4 years ago |
The beauty of a lyricless song is that it can mean something different to everyone who hears it. For me, I had been feeling numb for quite some time in life. I could really only remember feeling fear about not feeling anything or anyone else anymore. Nothing mattered because any time I tried for anything, it seemed to fall apart. To this day I think it was a self defense mechanism I used to stop getting hurt. Anyway, this song makes me think of when I first felt hope for the first time after that period in my life. Like there really was a light at the end of the tunnel and it really was reachable. Of course, for me this song has another meaning too. Some of that numbness I felt was in part due to failed relationships, so this was about me finding hope in a new girl and motivation to be my best self again. Renewed sense of worth and determination to make a better life for myself. |
Breaking Benjamin – Angels Fall Lyrics | 4 years ago |
I think this song switches between perspectives. At first he's talking about the hopelessness one person feels, but in the chorus it seems like he's saying he wants to be there for this person. He eventually makes it about seeing that there is more than this person sees. Life can be more and he'll be there until they find what's worth living for. Either that or he's been there and when the perspective seems to change, it's really him paying the favor forward to the next person in need. He found the way back to a life he could live and now he wants to do the same for someone else. |
Breaking Benjamin – Dawn Lyrics | 4 years ago |
This to me sounds like being born again. A second chance and the sense of bliss you get with a blank slate. Hope. |
Breaking Benjamin – Dark Lyrics | 4 years ago |
To continue with that thought, this song leads straight into Failure, which kind of reinforces my belief in this song leaning that way. Wanting more for yourself than what you've been/had. |
Breaking Benjamin – Dark Lyrics | 4 years ago |
In keeping with the theme of this album, this song (yes I'm aware it has no words) gives me the vibe of waking up to the realization of the darkness in your life. It makes me think of wanting more for life than what you've been doing and genuinely being distraught at what you've seen and being determined to make a change for the better. At 1:05 when you hear the voices, it's almost like longing for more and being in pain at what you're seeing or feeling. It reminds me of how in the old testament, a person would tear their garment out of despair. |
Thrice – Words in The Water Lyrics | 4 years ago |
Here is something Dustin and I disagree on. He said: "When I lost all hope to look someone took that heavy book from my hands all its weight they set aside after they had satisfied its demands" However, Jesus himself said: "17 “Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah (Law) or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. 18 Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud (basically the letter 'Y' in Hebrew) or a stroke will pass from the Torah — not until everything that must happen has happened. 19 So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot (commands) and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim (Pharisees), you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven!" The word that many new testament (only) believers use is "fulfill", which is incorrect, as he came to complete the Torah. To make it whole. He does this by expounding on those laws that his Father made, explaining them: Regarding anger: 21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny." Regarding lust: 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell." Regarding divorce: 31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." Regarding oaths: 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil." Regarding retaliation 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you." Regarding loving your enemies: 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[i] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." He actually goes on in Matthew 6 too, but I think you get the point. Most Christians like to say he came to "fulfill" the law so that we don't have to do it, but he himself said we should still and told us how. AFTER walking it perfectly in front of us to show that it CAN be done. It's not a "heavy book." In fact, Jesus said his yoke was easy and his burden was kind (Ironically, also used by Dustin in his lyrics) to say that the law is NOT too much for us. It's funny, because Christians give tithes, which are old testament (except it was food, not money.. lol. AND it was only for the Levitical priesthood because their whole lives revolved around the temple (which is not currently on earth) and they could not earn a living the way everyone else could. Christians still believe killing, stealing and cheating are wrong, but that's all old testament. Cherry picking is the worst thing that every happened to this faith. Don't get me wrong, it's a well put together song and it sounds beautiful, but the idea behind it is actually distressing and it saddens me to hear God's plans and instructions referred to as a burden. Hell, I don't even do these commands to be saved (as I believed we were saved from sin and given power over it, so it's already done), I do them simply because God said it was good and God also said He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, so naturally, what He says is good would be good yesterday, today and tomorrow as well. Otherwise, God would be a liar, and He is not. |
Thrice – Silver Wings Lyrics | 4 years ago |
@[abcdefghij:30740] Granted, I'm almost a decade late on this comment, but yes. I agree, and I think the reason this element is personified the way it is was intended to make us draw that parallel. The moment something goes wrong in our lives, we blame God. At the same time, we'll enjoy the blessings of the world we live in without stopping to be grateful to God. I bet the Christian bashers would be upset to hear that the breath of life and the presence of God is likened to air/wind quite often in the Bible. Dustin has shown deep knowledge of scripture through other lyrics, so I am not surprised of this parallel. Nor am I surprised that Christian bashers do not know this parallel, because they do not study the Bible and naturally, would not know about these parallels. Long story short, it's about air/wind on the surface, but it is meant to get us to think about our relationship with God. It's a shame that many will only see the surface of this song. |
Kaleo – Way Down We Go Lyrics | 5 years ago |
Very clear about the meaning in the first line and in the second verse: "Oh Father tell me, do we get what we deserve?" and "You let your feet run wild, Time has come as we oh, all go down. yeah, but for the fall, ooooh, my, do you dare to look me right in the eyes?" To me, this very clearly says you have to be careful how you live because you have to answer to God eventually. There is a measure of guilt in this song, and I think the lines: "'Cause they will run you down, down til the dark Yes and they will run you down, down til you fall And they will run you down, down til you go Yeah so you can't crawl no more" are about your actions that will follow you. |

Life is about more than the destination, the things that happen in between? That's life too. Nothing was an accident. The end result is who we are, who we became along the way. Every bit of it matters. |
Thrice – Just Breathe Lyrics | 5 years ago |
To me, this song seems straight-forward. There is always something to do, you always fee like there's more you can do to make the situation better and nothing you do is good enough. It's easy to be pulled away from your personal peace when you're never content. At what point do you enjoy where you are? There will always be another hurdle, so enjoy the moments while they're here. |
Poets Of The Fall – Carnival of Rust Lyrics | 5 years ago |
To me, this song seems like a desperate plea with his god to save him from himself. The first verse: "To breathe the name of your savior in your hour of need and taste the blame if the flavor should remind you of greed, of implication, insinuation and you will till you cannot lie still" sounds like he feels like crap because he only talks to his god when he wants/needs something and he feels greedy because of it to the point that he doesn't sleep well. The chorus: "Come feed the rain, 'cause I'm thirsty for your love dancing underneath a sky of lust. Yeah feed the rain 'cause without your love, my life ain't nothing but a carnival of rust" sounds to me like he's tired of living his life for his lusts and wants to know his god is still willing to accept him because without his god, his life feels trivial, like a shell of what it once was. Next: "It's all a game, avoiding failure, when true colors will bleed, all in the name of misbehavior and the things we don't need" Again, it seems like he feels his life has taken a turn for the trivial and he only ever seeks out what feels good, there is no meaning anymore. Next: "I lust for after no disaster can touch, touch us anymore, and more than ever, I hope to never fall where enough is not the same it was before" Sounds like he wants what his god was offering to begin with, and he worries that chasing after his lusts will leave him feeling more empty every time until he simply can't satisfy his desires. Finally, at the end he says "Don't walk away, don't walk away, ooh when the world is burning. Don't walk away, don't walk away, ooh when the heart is yearning" sounds like he is pleading with his god in his time of need, his world has fallen apart due to pursuit of selfish desires and now he wants nothing but to do what is good in his god's eyes and he hopes it is not too late. Again, this is all just my interpretation. It is no better or worse than anyone else's, I just thought I'd offer another perspective on it. :) |
Amber Run – Just My Soul Responding Lyrics | 6 years ago |
To me, it sounds self explanatory. He was in a relationship with someone he loved, they fought often ("but every day I found new ways to hurt you and every day we took our sides") and finally ended their relationship. He's conflicted because he loves this person but he knows the longing he feels now is because the one he loved left and he doesn't see it as fair ("and it's just my soul responding to the love, to the love you took from me"). It wasn't that the love simply left, it was specifically the love this person took from him. |
Collective Soul – Where The River Flows Lyrics | 6 years ago |
To me, this song sounds like he's tired of people wishing him well because of his situation. I think he's tired of wishing it would get better and people telling him it would be. He just wants to live his life, whatever comes next. If there's more pain, screw it, just bring it on. It'll happen whether he wants it to or not, so might as well embrace it. If that's the case, I find it VERY relate-able. |
