@[Frost82:22321] Even if I respect your interpretation... Actually it's just a song about Bruce's (real) lifelong friendship with Terry Magovern, who always was like a brother for him. You can also listen to "Terry's song" in, I believe, WOAD album... It's written after Terry Magovern died. |

My wife and I saw Springsteen sing this song along with Patti once, and we really got touched by the amazing honest love that they showed to us. Around 4 years later, we got married, and we opened the dance to the sound of Tougher than the rest. And still now and always... the road will be dark, the line really thin... but we will walk it for each other anytime. |

I think, besides that Thunder Road is the most beautiful song ever written in modern music history (maybe not the best, but the most beautiful)).... this is a song about LOVE. Just love, actual love, desperate love, Not the kind of love that pictures beautiful and lovely smiling couples... but the loneliness of a couple in love that says "F... off" to everyone and everything.... to just roll down the window, let the wind blow back their hair, run away to chase the promised land in their one last chance to trade in these wings for some wheels, and pulling out of this town full of losers. But still remembering that the ride ain't free, and keeping in mind that we need to show some faith and we have to remind that there's magic in the night.... because even if you're not a beauty... hey. It's allright for me. THAT is what I think real love is. |

This song is just painful in so many ways. It smells like cigarette smoke, cheap whiskey and big melancholy... and it's made with only music! I think what makes it SO painful and heart-breaking, is that somehow it's talking about all of us. It forces us to face some realities we all have to live... We all have been shot point blank one way or another, our youth has always been murdered by time and life... Springsteen just exagerates it with an extreme character who falls into the slavery of what looks like heroin; but all of us have grown up, we all got older, lose some bright, or even "forget how to love, and how to fight". Oh, and.... that piano... that lost and sad and heavy lethany in Bm... But I have to say, that I even prefer the lyrics that Springsteen was singing (or maybe even improvising in some parts) in the 1978 concerts. They fed you and they raised you as fast as you could learn, and all the pretty little things that baby wants, baby has to earn. So you worked your hands out to the bone, you drove throughout the night, but all those things that baby needs, she can never have... |
