Simon and Garfunkel – Red Rubber Ball Lyrics
| 6 years ago
|
This reminds me of Paul Simon's relationship with Carrie Fisher, who was bipolar, and could easily be captured by the image of a red rubber ball, shiny like the sun. |

Joni Mitchell – My Old Man Lyrics

I question the logic of not needing a "piece of paper from the city hall keeping us tied and true"; as a married man, I can appreciate the institution of marriage, for all its shortcomings, it does symbolize at the very least a transcendent sort of commitment to love another person and forever work on the relationship.
With this in mind, i think she is talking here about a man she has not yet committed fully, or who has yet to commit to her fully. Perhaps she justifies his fears of commitment by saying she doesn't need it anyway. |

Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water Lyrics
| 6 years ago
|
Someone told me this was a song Paul Simon wrote when his mother had cancer. He loves and supports her through anything, and will see her off until the final breath. It is a song he wrote to demonstrate his love. "Sail on silver girl...your time has come I shine...all your dreams gone their way." Your time has come and gone, but I will sail behind you and, like a bridge over troubled water, support you through even in the depths of despair. |

Simon and Garfunkel – El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could) Lyrics
| 6 years ago
|
"I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail." "I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet." It's a parable examining one's lot in life. He is being practical. Better to be the top of the food chain than the bottom. Better to have power than to be the powerless. Better to be practical than be a dreamer. "If I only could I surely would." He'll always be a dreamer. |

Simon and Garfunkel – America Lyrics
|
This is a song about a couple on a road trip. It's a story about dreams, yes, but more like an homage to a playful exchange of love between a man and a women when they were young and adventurous dreamers. It's a story about romance and adventure. Everyone is looking for America. But they are doing it together in the NJ turnpike after boarding a greyhound in Pittsburgh. |

Simon and Garfunkel – At The Zoo Lyrics

This is a fun song. That's about all it is. Doesn't need to have a deeper meaning. Yes, animals can be allegories. They are anthropomorphized, but there may not be any deeper meaning than that society is a heterogenous mix of characters. Everyone's got a story. |

Simon and Garfunkel – A Hazy Shade of Winter Lyrics
| 6 years ago
|
@[thatchinagirl:21086], indeed. "Time time time, see what's become of me. While I look around for my possibilities."
"The sky is a hazy shade of winter" indicates that he is nearing the end and regrets "carrying a cup in his hand" his whole life.
It is easy to tell people to hang onto dashed hopes and dreams, but in the end, when things don't work out, you kind of just have to fake it. "Simply pretend that you can build them again."
Memories are all we have and m we can always rewrite the narrative in weaving tapestries of time, but in the end one can only hope to be remembered by others after they are gone. That is how we transcend mortality.
The narrator is a deeply cynical man growing to find some sense of meaning in his later life. |

Simon and Garfunkel – Sparrow [Live] Lyrics
| 6 years ago
|
The sparrow is a weary, lonely, unloved man. Everyone to whom he turns for love, solace, humanitarian aid, and even food turns up his nose at him. He may have no social group to which he can belong, but this man is nevertheless your brother, because just like he will die, you, too, will someday die. We are born alone and die alone. The only one to write a eulogy for him is Mother Earth, the only thing that unites us is that we are all mere mortals, we are all born alone and die alone, carbon destined to return to the earth. It speaks to the basic nature of life and human experience. |

Simon and Garfunkel – I Am A Rock Lyrics

This song always reminds me of those who, deeply troubled, isolate themselves from social interaction. Everyone know someone like this. They glorify their own isolation as "independence", but the truth is that they are profoundly lonely. |

Simon and Garfunkel – Bleecker Street Lyrics
| 6 years ago
|
Obviously a nostalgic ode to New York's Greenwhich Village, which is home to Bleeker Street. This was the artsiest ("a poet reads crooked rhymes") and grimiest neighborhood of the City in their time, probably related to its being the most affordable. "$30 pays your rent." |
