The meaning of this was obvious to me on first listen - I've been hospitalized for depression in the past and this speaks exactly how I feel about it still. "Alone in this bedroom, she never fixes this, but at least she prescribed pills." In this setting, you're pretty much stuck in a room you're not allowed to leave for six hours a day. It has a bed, a bathroom, a desk and chair, and my personal favorite, a single window with a large seat for you to sit on and wonder where your life has gone...
I'm getting off topic. My point is, he's saying that everyone is telling him they can help, but all they do is drug you.

Daft Punk – Instant Crush (feat. Julian Casablancas) Lyrics 6 years ago
I agree that this is probably about a love triangle, but this is how I interpret it.

There's a guy that loves a girl (obviously). However, I think that this said guy did something to the girl. Just think about it: "I hear the last thing that you said: 'I listened to your problems, now listen to mine! I didn't want to anymore.'" I see this as the girl complaining to the guy. Especially considering the line in the chorus: "I chained myself to a friend because I don't know what else I can do," or "I know it unlocks like a door," meaning his problems would be lessened talking to said girl.

"A little time with you is all that I get, it's all we need because it's all we can take." I see this as a situation where they're trying to still remain friends, but it's really awkward talking to each other after whatever happened, and so they can't really spend too much time together for the sake of their own sanities.

One of the most upsetting parts of the song is "One thousand lonely stars hiding in the cold - take it, I don't wanna sing anymore." He's so alone without this girl after messing up and now he doesn't want to "sing anymore." This could be any number of things. Maybe he doesn't want to keep talking about it, as he says "Still more again," indicating that that verse wasn't the end of the story and that there is still more to it. It could also be a little dark, maybe saying he doesn't want to live anymore.

As for "he runs his scissors at the seam in the wall," the new guy is probably trying to break the connection between the two of them, but if he steps in, or "[breaks] it down," she'll probably get mad, and "[he] would fall."

I just wanted to point out the second verse. "You save him from the flood - a couple miles down the road, he's covered in your blood." This is talking about offering a homeless man a ride because you feel bad and want to help him. Then, after generously inviting him into your car, after driving a few miles he kills you, hence the line, "covered in your blood." It is a good message of not hitchhiking.

Cage the Elephant – Soil To The Sun Lyrics 6 years ago
A lot of people are mentioning religion, and I guess that could be a part of this song, but I really think it has a broader meaning than that.
The verses are pretty easy to understand; he has a vision that makes him excited. The chorus, however, is a little tricky.
First, we have to think of the symbols: the sun, the moon, the stars, and the sky. Stars are a symbol of hope in the darkness, and the sky is a symbol of our beliefs, as it is all around us and is what we see whenever we look up. The moon doesn't seem to be a huge symbol, but it isn't a symbol of nighttime when everything is dark and you can now see what the sky really looks like. Almost like seeing the truth.
The sun is a little more tricky. I refer back to the title of the song for this one. There are three distinct definitions of soil: dirt on the surface of the earth, a regional territory, and "to dirty or dishonor." We can assume that the correct definition in this case would be "to dishonor," as the sun is "crash[ing] down to the ground." I'll get back to this later.
So, apparently something that we used to follow has been rebuked and dishonored. The moon rises, bringing the night, where we can see the truth of what the sun was hiding from us: a blood red sky. So, what we believed in was causing hatred and messing up the world. The dead is crawling out from their graves and falling to their knees. Falling to your knees is a sign of helplessness, sometimes begging for mercy. So, those who have left the world like this beg for mercy as the stars (the last hope) scream, "You know see the truth. The weak will rise and give birth to the sky!" This sentence means that those who used to be ridiculed for wanting to change the world will rise and create a new world, one filled with peace.
The sun is something we always see. In this case, it has clouded the blood red sky from the people, just as it causes the sky to seem blue and hide the stars during the day. So, the sun must represent the sense of security we feel that clouds our visions from what is actually happening. It's like if you drink a lot and you let it slide because it makes you feel good, but in reality, you're messing up your body.
As someone else mentioned, we can also tie these symbols in with the foretold signs of the Second Coming, which will bring a period of peace and prosperity on the Earth.

Cage the Elephant – Always Something Lyrics 6 years ago
This song is obviously a pessimistic view on how life never goes the way you want it to, and no matter how hard you try to change things, no matter how good life is going at the moment, something else will always step in the way and ruin it.

This song is pretty similar to Hopeless Opus by Imagine Dragons. This song is a bit more dark, however, blaming fate for everything that goes wrong, whereas Hopeless Opus is mostly blaming themselves for ruining their own lives, though fate does take part in it. In other words, Hopeless Opus is more regretful than pessimistic.

Imagine Dragons – Hopeless Opus Lyrics 6 years ago
First, I'd like to point out that the definition of "opus" is a creation, so the name means "hopeless creation." I didn't know what that meant, so just wanted to touch up on that.

I believe this song is about someone trying to change their life but feeling unable to, hence the reason that this creation is "hopeless." Not only does it ask "Mr. Fate man" to give him a ninth life (a second chance, or in this case, a ninth or maybe more) but also permission to "write [his] own line," meaning take take control over his own life.

This song is really similar to Always Something from Cage the Elephant, granted that Always Something is a bit more dark. This song is talking about how this person has pretty much destroyed their own life with help of fate. Always Something is talking about how even when life is going perfectly, something always steps in the way and ruins it (wife having an affair, homeless person murdering him, etc).

Cage the Elephant – Teeth Lyrics 6 years ago
For one, Matt has revealed in many of his concerts that this song is about love, but I see it more as a love of music rather than a romantic relationship.

Obviously, "Are you into the beat?" suggests this, but on a more personal level, I've found that when music is involved, I really start to feel a tingling sensation in my gums and teeth. It's not entirely pleasant, but at the same time, I still don't want to stop the music. Even so, many a time, I get so into the music that it often triggers stressful memories or leads me to think about the past, depending on the song. Music is powerful.

The dialogue proceeding the song talks about a man that is famous and relishes in it, as he says, "when did I get so eaten up by mobs and covered in a cloak of popularity?" and that he "worships the sound of his own voice." This could also mean that possibly a songwriter starts to lose his sanity with all of the popularity and begins to become self-serving and believing he can do anything, as the lyrics say, "I think I'll take it up to the streets" and "I wish I were an astronaut."

I love this song and I don't even know why. XD

Cage the Elephant – Cigarette Daydreams Lyrics 6 years ago
I believe that this song is actually discussing suicide. I know there is another person interprets it as the struggle with a mental disease, and that could be a part of it, but I really think that this is about someone watching a friend or loved one contemplate suicide. However, this song also strongly suggests that this person has already gone through with it, or has at least tried to.

The first thing that stands out to me is the beginning of the song. The person is alone, and the narrator cannot understand what is happening, but the person is avoiding eye contact, trying to hide their fear, but it is obvious that there is something going on. Additionally, they look "in and out of somewhere else," meaning that they don't seem in touch with reality. These are all major warning signs of depression and/or suicidal tendencies.

Again, in the second verse, the person in question looks "out of place" and is isolating themselves from everyone, another big warning sign. "Cigarette Daydream" is probably a reference to how people feel that smoking takes away their problems. This might also lead to the person reflecting on their own life, maybe even thinking about death.

As for the chorus, the "pouring rain" could symbolize a problem or a period of great sadness in one's life. Therefore, they are searching for an answer to their problems, or attempting to find a way out of this time of grief, as it also says that they are "trying to find peace of mind." One of the ways that people seek this is by ending their lives.

This is all kind of floppy, but the last part of the chorus was really what lead me to believe this. After analyzing the song, I thought it was just about a struggle that need to be changed, but these ines really confused me. "If we could find a reason to change" implies that there is a problem that needs to be fixed. But what? The next line answers this question. "If you could find a reason to stay." What do you mean, a reason to stay? After carefully looking at all of the previous lyrics, I came to the conclusion that this just might mean "If you could find a reason to stay with us (stay alive), then maybe we can find a way to change ourselves to help you."

The other line that really confused me was "You were only seventeen." If this song was about mental illness, this line would make no sense, as depression is extremely common in teens and young adults. It doesn't just say, "You were seventeen," it says, "You were ONLY seventeen." When someone says that you were ONLY [insert age], they are implying that you were too young for whatever occurrence that has burdened you to fall upon you. After analyzing the last part of the chorus, as I previously explained, the lyrics of this verse started to fall together. A "mean streak" is a darker-shaded stripe or streak. So, "soft speak with a mean streak" could mean that this person has a great personality, but they have a dark side. This "dark side" brought the narrator "to [his] knees." This means that this dark side must be devastating to the narrator. As I have said, this "dark side" might just be related to suicide, so these few lines highly suggest that this person has either attempted suicide, or they maybe have even succeeded in killing themself.

I haven't even heard this song for 2 days, and I'm already trying to figure out what it means. I love this song, it's so powerful, especially "standing in the pouring rain." That line really speaks to me on multiple personal levels.

Cage the Elephant – Spiderhead Lyrics 7 years ago
As of recent events in my life, I think I finally understand the meaning of this one.

For one, I'd like to point out that "Black Widow," another song from the Melophobia album, also uses a spider to represent a negative relationship. Obviously, in this song, there is some sort of connection between the writer and another person that did some not-so-nice things to him. By this connection, we can infer that the spiders in this song represent a thought that plagues the writer's mind and won't leave him alone, as is represented in "Black Widow."

I guess I need to talk about my personal experience in order for this to make sense. I've been suffering from a lot of self-doubt recently, and that includes blaming myself for every little thing that happens. One of my close friends got mad at me recently, and though they say they're fine and just need space, I still blame myself for it.

"I am the one you left for dead / ...You are the bullet in my head" means that this person has abandoned the writer when he has hit rock bottom, and she was the cause of this. "As you stand over my grave / Tell me it's okay / You pause the lips upon my face" probably means that though this person has figuratively "killed" him, the person tells him that she's fine and still kisses him, maybe as a good-bye or out of pity.

I think the next part is pretty self-explanatory, but either he feels super good around this person or he feels downright horrible. He feels like he is losing his mind waiting for answers to his questions.

"I think your mother wants me dead / ...I am a schizophrenic man." Schizophrenia is a mental illness where you have irrational fears of things that are not true or non-existent. This piece might mean that he feels so bad that he believes her mother might even want him dead, as well. "I wouldn't change you if I could" probably means that he doesn't hate the person for what happened and still admires them.

The chorus, I believe, relates to how his mind is poisoned with thoughts. "It all works out in time / You know I'm going to be all right" seems to be a promise that even though he is so low at the moment, he still believes he will get over it. "You may take my eyes, but baby, I'm not blind" could mean that although he can't stop thinking about her [all he can think about (see) so she "took his eyes," so to speak] but he's not blind to his other thoughts - his happier thoughts.

I'm entirely sure if this is accurate or understandable, but this is how I would interpret it.

I'm not saying that drug abuse is not the focus. That is very possible based on the writer's biography. I'm just saying that we should probably look at the meaning through a wider keyhole.

Cage the Elephant – Shake Me Down Lyrics 7 years ago
While it is possible that this song could be about the writer's use of drugs, after looking closely at the lyrics, I have realized that there is little evidence of this.

I believe that this song discusses pretty much any addiction, habit, or obstacle that we might overcome in life. Whether it be drugs, depression, or anger towards oneself, it all makes sense if you plug it into the lyrics. "People walk into the sea just to find memories plagued by constant misery" implies that the people turning back to these habits feel as if there is nothing else better or possible for them. If you are trying to forgive yourself for something you did, it is very easy to blame yourself again and cause yourself more misery, feeling like you deserve it. Addiction makes you believe you can't live without it, even though you know it only causes you pain. Same goes for other lines, "broken dreams, lonely times indeed," "time for me to let go," and "even on a cloudy day, I'll keep my eyes fixed on the sun." In my personal opinion, the first (and last) two lines are the most powerful.

This is, hands down, my favorite from CTE. It;s so powerful, and it was even the song that got me to listen and enjoy the other songs they wrote.

Additionally, this could also be about dealing with depression, as the second verse talks about how he is "getting pleasure from the pain," and in the chorus, "I couldn't take this anymore."

Cage the Elephant – Right Before My Eyes (Timber Me Shivers) Lyrics 7 years ago
Let us note that the original name for the song is "Timber Me Shivers." This is most likely related to the pirate's term, "shiver me timbers," which is used to express surprise or shock. Also note that the phrase is reversed. This can mean that the writer is talking not only about how he is shocked about how messed up the world is, but also relates to the line "the world world lost control," as the world is turning upside down, just as the words "shiver" and "timber" are reversed.

Honestly, I thought the meaning of this song was obvious. Though you technically could relate the song to drug use, there is another explanation for the line "golden needles, names we take in [vain/vein]." While it is possible that the word should be "vein," this could also mean that people are taking things too literally. Whereas taking names in vain would mean to take something important and use it against its purpose, to take "in vein" could mean that we take things that shouldn't be important and making them out to be more than what they should be. It's like we are taking an idea that is not a big deal and injecting it into ourselves like it is.

Either way, this is a beautiful song; without a doubt one of my favorites from the artist. I cry often when I listen to this song. It's so powerful, and I would definitely recommend it.
