Juice WRLD – Come & Go Lyrics 3 years ago
Love believes that you can be something to someone, and that is what the first verse is all about. All through life, you keep trying to impress, but everything you do is never the best, and you feel like you amount to nothing. As the singer echoes, ‘it seems like I perfected it’, being disastrous. However, love is indeed the disaster waiting to happen, and when it does, he advises that ‘take it like medicine’.

The song indicates that finding the perfect person and growing that love should help you become a better person. Love brings hope, and it’s obvious in life that anyone who loves you tries to bring out the best in you even though it does not always work.

The song is about a person who is broken and sees himself as a failure. Then he finds love and decides he can be better. Love comes with its challenges such as misunderstandings, the past often disrupts more, and the future is bleak. However, if the two are willing to forge ahead, they must ‘stay strong’.

I believe that there is nothing in life you can ask for other than a trusting, loving and dependable partner to hold your hand through life. That is the moral lesson of the story that you keep trying to hold it together as that kind of love doesn’t always come, and once you let it go, you will never find it again!

Pearl Jam – Dance of the Clairvoyants Lyrics 4 years ago
“Dance of the Clairvoyants” is so experimental and lyrically complicated, I almost couldn’t understand what the song was trying to say. After a few listens, though, I actually think this song has a lot of complex thought about love and humanity. The lyrics argue that love is “as big as the ocean, and equally hard to control.” To me, this suggests that love is an emotion that is extremely powerful, but in a way that often has more power over us than we do over it. Love is one of the biggest driving forces in our lives, but how much control do we actually have over it?

There’s also a phrase that says “love is friction, ripe for comfort…endless equations, and tugging persuasions.” This lyric frames love in such an interesting and eccentric way. Most of us probably don’t think of “friction” or “equations” when we think of love. However, there’s definitely truth in this statement. Love is friction, because friction happens when two things collide and experience contact. Two people coming together isn’t always seamless; love can be messy. Love can also be calculated, like an equation. We want to present ourselves to the world as easy to love. At our core, we want to love and be loved. We make little decisions throughout our lives that we feel will bring us that love. Our desire to love and be loved pulls at our hearts, a “tugging persuasion” leading us to make decisions solely based on the pursuit of love.

Another powerful lyric in the song comes in the chorus. Eddie Vedder sings “expecting perfection leaves a lot to ignore, when the past is the present and the future's no more.” I believe Pearl Jam meant this lyric as commentary on our society as a whole. When we expect perfection in our world, we are quickly disappointed, and often we collectively choose to ignore the issues. “When the past is the present,” or when the past mistakes of humanity are repeated over and over in the present, we can’t escape the problems that we’ve always had. The future seems destined to be a repetition of the same problems that we choose to ignore. I think Pearl Jam wrote this song as a way to convey humanity in all its complicated, messy, imperfect ways. “Dance of the Clairvoyants” is a complex, though-provoking song about humanity, with an 80’s vibe that’s an ode to both earlier music and modern pop.

Halsey – You Should Be Sad Lyrics 4 years ago
The song itself is Haley’s debut use of experimenting with country music, by keeping an acoustic sound throughout her song with a guitar. The video as well keeps up the “southern” aesthetic with her the outfit of others, the fact that she comes into the video with an older Trams-Am car, she walks into a club that is littered with hay, the “group” dance scene is a variation of square dancing, and even her cuts alluded to country style. This is a very interesting move on her part, I believe that country style is almost being used as an "artistic format", which is not wrong, but I saw this with Lil Nas X (in his hit song "Old Country Road). I could kind of predict that probably more people in the hip-pop/ pop field will get on this trend. Country music although it is not bad, is a sound that most young people are put off by, and that means creators have some "content" (because although country music is not bad, it sort of carries a redundant sound).

Another topic to tackle about the song is its meaning, I think it’s a straight forward song about a very public relationship she had with her ex-boyfriend “G-Eazy" (him being one of my favorite rappers) because although he publicly has never admitted it, Halsey has said it many times that he did. This song would not be the first one she would write about him, "Without Me" was a very angry son venting her frustrations. However this new song tends to carry a more sorrowful reflection of their time together, not in detail, but a view from the eyes of a wiser person who can look back and accept what happened.

Eminem – Godzilla Lyrics 4 years ago
With his latest release, Eminem is determined to remind everyone what he’s capable of. A solid collection of his signature style of quick, rapid-fire lyrics over a selection of impressive beats, “Music to be Murdered By” is wrapped up neatly in a themed homage to Alfred Hitchcock; this is a refreshing return to form for the lyrical speedster. What really elevates the album, however, are the wonderfully eclectic features. Current artists like Anderson Pak and Ed Sheeran bring an intriguing balance of talent and style to an already impressive offering.

The stand out performance comes in the form of “Godzilla,” an energetic title that comes into play a little over one third into the album. It features a surprising collaboration with the late Juice Wrld, a talented singer, rapper, and songwriter who sadly passed away last December unexpectedly. His contribution on “Godzilla” comes in the form of a smooth, catchy chorus that successfully breaks up the machine-gun style with which Eminem delivers his verses. It is unfortunate that Juice Wrld only had a chance to write and record the chorus, as we are left without a featured verse as well, but it could be argued that “less is more” here and the song achieves a satisfying balance by switching back and forth between Eminem’s fast verses (especially the final verse, which unfurls into a predictable yet no less enjoyable blur of tight rhymes) and Juice’s smooth, perfectly enunciated chorus. Whether you consider this a rewarding blend of old and new styles or you can’t help but think it unfinished with the glaring omission of a Juice Wrld verse, there is no denying this is a labor of love from all parties involved. Juice Wrld has listed Eminem as one of his greatest musical inspirations, so hearing them together on a track is a rewarding moment. So long as Eminem continues to attract up-and-coming talent like this and give them a platform to show off their skills on the mic, he will remain not only relevant but an icon of the rap and hip-hop community.

Justin Bieber – Yummy Lyrics 4 years ago
Growing up as a young girl as Justin Bieber took the world by storm with great pop music and that iconic hairstyle will always be a part of my childhood. Watching him grow as my friends and I did, and seeing his musical style change with that growth, has been really cool to see, too. It’s 2020 now, 12 years after the release of his first album, he’s a married man, and his musical style reflects his shift into adulthood.

Bieber has now begun a new era, with his recent release of the song “Yummy.” While this has been met with mixed reviews, many people have been excited to see Bieber ready to release new music, and I for one am ready to see this next album experiment with a variety of new styles, tones, and genres as we see a new decade of Justin Bieber.

Carrie Underwood – Spinning Bottles Lyrics 5 years ago
Hearing the song “Spinning Bottles” for the first time, images and emotions will flow like liquor. Anyone living alongside someone with a drinking problem can related to “pacing the floor,” “checking the time,” and “Another night of no sleepin’,” and will no doubt hope their loved one doesn’t “drive.” The most powerful images “She’s all cried out on the kitchen floor” and “He’s passed out on the bathroom floor” are juxtaposed against each other in alternate choruses, emphasizing the pain fraught on each person.

This song is lyrically driven and instrumentally subdued with repetitive piano chords that mimic the repetitive nature of drinking—bottle after bottle after bottle. A sparse sprinkling of piano notes creeps in before the plaintive, low strings build subtly toward the chorus. Never do you hear a bass or drums as they aren’t needed. The vocals do most of the work because it’s a human song about human anguish that asks the question, “Will it end?” and all too often the answer is, “Nobody knows. . . “

Lady GaGa – Shallow Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is emotive both melodically and lyrically. The sparse acoustic guitar underscores the desire to escape a modern world that is increasingly shallow and, at times, isolating—with its reality TV shows, selfies, and instant social-media “friendships.” The song makes you think, and the instrumental pauses allow you to catch your breath, take in the words, and contemplate a deeper meaning.

The words “I’m falling” are the emotional peak of the song and have a dual meaning for me, reminding me of going off the deep end but also of falling in love. In this duet with Bradley Cooper, the singers yearn for something more and are falling—almost freefalling—in order to break through the surface veneer of happiness, due in part to the trappings of fame—because they are longing to reach a deeper place of meaning, both in their relationship and within themselves.

Maroon 5 – Girls Like You Lyrics 5 years ago
Girls Like You is so catchy! I’m going to be humming it for the rest of the day. I just watched the video and that made it even better. Where else can I find a video featuring Eleven, Mary J. Blidge and Cardi B. (And so many other awesome women) ?! I love way the ups and downs of love are all presented in this song and the way that different women are celebrated in the video.

Childish Gambino – This Is America Lyrics 6 years ago
This is America is a song of contrast.

The church choir sings an uplifting catchy melody under Gambino’s innocent “we
just wanna party” lyrics and Young Thug’s crooning ad-libs. Then the song is ripped
from its bright, joyous choir and guitar foundation to reveal a muddy trap beat, layered with primal percussion and gritty, droning 808’s. Here Gambino changes his tone, sounding direct, percussive and confident in his delivery.

The stark contrast in the music is mirrored in the visuals. Cars on fire, hijackings,
riots, and police brutality fill the backdrop of the video while Gambino and his posse
dance in ignorant bliss. Each of the verses begin with Gambino shooting: one
reminiscent of a political execution, and the other painfully alluding to the Texas Church shooting last November. Each are then followed by remorseless singing and dancing.

To Gambino, these contradictions and multiple realities are America. The
violence is repetitive and inescapable, and the injustices toward underprivileged people are a constant part of life. But there’s also music and brotherhood and faith and celebration alongside these tragedies. Gambino is showing us that America is violence and happiness, cruelty and community at the same time.

"But I had a great night 'cause you kept rubbing against my arm"

Man, if you've never felt this in your life, you're either full of shit or depraved. This seemingly simple line is so unbelievably true.

I am not sure that feeling would ever get old.

Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do Lyrics 6 years ago
To me, it's a bit ironic. It seems to be Taylor saying that she's changed as a result of these things that have happened (Kanye, whatever) and isn't naive anymore. But isn't it a bit naive itself to let something so trivial effect her so much?

I really like Taylor and respect that she writes her own words, from her heart; but I find it difficult to appreciate the message as I interpret it here.

Linkin Park – One More Light Lyrics 6 years ago
Did Chester know what he was eventually going to do when he wrote this, or other songs on the new album?

This seems to show signs of hope, but ultimately it wasn't enough to keep Chester from taking his own life. Truly sad.

Harry Styles – Sign of the Times Lyrics 7 years ago
I was wondering what he meant with the line:

Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets, the bullets?

I hadn't even thought of the Orlando Night Club shooting. Wow, that totally took the wind out of my sails.

The piano and the beat really give it that somber feel I would think he's going for.

I do like when he says:

We don't talk enough
We should open up

It's easy to blame the guns or certain groups of people, and we're quick to just sweep stuff under the rug and not talk about things. It won't solve all the problems, but we really should address some of the underlying issues that cause someone to take such terrible actions.
